Chapter 9: The Truth Gabriel Carried
The cabin was silent except for the sound of the old heater struggling against the cold.
Gabriel sat across from us.
A man who had existed as a ghost for twenty-five years.
A man I had mourned.
A man I had hated.
A man I had loved.
Daniel sat beside me.
He did not look away.
That was the first thing I noticed.
My son was no longer the child waiting for answers.
He was a man demanding them.
“Start from the beginning.””
Gabriel nodded.
“I owe you that.””
His eyes moved to me.
“I owe both of you.””
I folded my hands together.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
The question came out softer than I expected.
Gabriel looked down.
“Because I thought you hated me.””
I closed my eyes.
“You believed Evelyn?””
He flinched.
“Yes.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Tell us everything.””
Gabriel took a breath.
“The night I found out what Victor was doing, I went to confront him.””
He looked at his hands.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“That was always your mistake,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
“What?””
“You always thought you could carry everything alone.””
A sad smile crossed his face.
“You still know me.””
I looked away.
“Unfortunately.””
Daniel watched us.
Confused.
Because despite everything, there was still something between us.
Something that twenty-five years had not destroyed.
Gabriel continued.
“Victor had been stealing from investors for years. But the worst part was not the money.””
“What was it?”” Daniel asked.
“He was building leverage.””
Gabriel looked at him.
“Over people.””
He explained.
Victor collected secrets.
Debt.
Mistakes.
Weaknesses.
Anything he could use.
“He knew Evelyn was vulnerable.””
My jaw tightened.
“She told me.””
Gabriel nodded.
“She regretted it.””
“I’m sure she did.””
He accepted the anger in my voice.
“She gave Victor information because she thought he would only use it for business.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She helped him destroy you.””
“Yes.””
Gabriel looked at him.
“But she also helped save you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Gabriel reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I didn’t know when I would be able to give it to you.””
Daniel stared.
“What is it?””
“Your birth certificate.””
Daniel frowned.
“I have one.””
Gabriel shook his head.
“Not the original.””
He handed it over.
Daniel opened it.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stood.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked at me.
“My last name.””
I froze.
Gabriel spoke quietly.
“Victor changed the records.””
The room became cold.
“He wanted Daniel connected to the Holloway family.””
“Why?””
Gabriel looked at him.
“Because Victor believed your son was the key to controlling everything.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“I’m not a key.””
“No.””
Gabriel’s voice broke.
“You’re a person. And that’s what I spent twenty-five years trying to protect.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell us?””
His eyes filled.
“Because after I received that message from you…”
He stopped.
I knew.
The fake message.
The one Evelyn sent.
“I thought you wanted me gone.””
My throat tightened.
“I never said that.””
“I know now.””
The words hurt.
Because there was no way to repair lost years.
No apology could return birthdays.
First steps.
Graduations.
Ordinary moments.
The moments that disappear forever.
Daniel looked down.
“Did you ever watch me?””
Gabriel hesitated.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked him.
“How?””
“I had people I trusted.””
Daniel looked angry.
“You watched me grow up but stayed away?””
Gabriel looked destroyed.
“I thought staying away was the only way to keep you alive.””
Daniel stood.
“Do you know what it felt like?””
Gabriel looked up.
“To think my father didn’t want me?””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Gabriel’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t know what it’s like to wonder if you weren’t worth staying for.””
I looked at Gabriel.
Because I knew that pain.
He did too.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel turned away.
But he did not leave.
And that mattered.
Because forgiveness does not begin with forgetting.
It begins with staying.
A phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Isabelle, you need to hear this.””
“What happened?””
“The Holloways are moving.””
I looked at Gabriel.
“How?””
“They know Gabriel is alive.””
Silence.
Gabriel stood immediately.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus continued.
“They found the cabin.””
My blood went cold.
“How?””
No answer.
Then Marcus said:
“Because someone gave them the location.””
I looked toward the door.
Toward the darkness outside.
Someone had betrayed us again.
Gabriel’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“What?””
He whispered:
“There’s only one person who knew this location.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Who?””
Gabriel looked at me.
And the name he said made my entire body freeze.
“Your son’s fiancée.””
Charlotte.
The woman who entered our family pretending to love Daniel.
The woman who claimed she was trapped by her father.
The woman who had cried and apologized.
Gabriel looked at me.
“She was never just working for Richard.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
Gabriel’s voice was barely audible.
“She was working for someone much more dangerous.””
The lights outside the cabin suddenly went out.
The room fell into darkness.
Then came the sound of footsteps.
Someone was approaching.
May you like
And this time…
they were not coming to negotiate.
