Chapter 6: The Woman Gabriel Protected
I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.
There are moments when your mind refuses to accept what your eyes are seeing.
This was one of them.
Gabriel.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably him.
The same eyes.
The same posture.
The same expression that used to make me believe he knew every secret in the world.
Daniel stepped beside me.
“Who is that?””
I could not answer.
Because the truth was impossible.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus looked at the image.
“Where was this taken?””
I zoomed in.
The building behind Gabriel came into view.
A small brick structure.
A faded sign.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus studied my face.
“Isabelle?””
I pointed at the building.
“That’s where Gabriel and I first met.””
Nobody spoke.
Twenty-eight years earlier, before money and power and companies, before everything became complicated, there had only been a small abandoned building in downtown San Francisco.
I was cleaning offices at night.
Gabriel was an architect working late.
He was the first person who ever looked at me and asked my name before asking what I did.
I remembered the first conversation.
The first laugh.
The first time someone made me feel visible.
And now that same place was appearing again.
After all these years.
“Mom.””
Daniel’s voice brought me back.
“What does this mean?””
I looked at my son.
“I don’t know.””
But I was lying.
I had a feeling.
A terrible one.
The next morning, Marcus and I drove to the building.
Daniel insisted on coming.
“I’m involved.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t know what we’ll find.””
He nodded.
“I spent my entire life not knowing.””
That answer broke my heart.
So I let him come.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Dust covered the windows.
The door creaked when Marcus opened it.
Inside, everything smelled like old wood and forgotten memories.
I walked slowly.
Every step felt like walking backward through time.
“This place…”
Daniel looked around.
“This was where you met him?””
I nodded.
“He was fixing the electrical system for the building owner.””
A small smile appeared.
“He told me my cleaning cart was blocking his work.””
Daniel smiled faintly.
“That sounds like him.””
“It does.””
For a moment, we were not searching for answers.
We were remembering.
Then Marcus called out.
“Isabelle.””
I turned.
He stood near the back room.
Holding a small metal box.
My heart stopped.
“Where did you find that?””
“Behind a loose wall panel.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why would someone hide something here?””
Because Gabriel knew.
Before I could answer, Marcus opened the box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And one letter.
The handwriting was Gabriel’s.
My hands trembled as I took it.
This time, I opened it immediately.
Isabelle,
If you found this, then I was right. Someone eventually came looking.
I stopped.
Daniel read over my shoulder.
I need you to know one thing first: I never abandoned you.
My eyes filled.
Twenty-five years.
Twenty-five years of believing the opposite.
I continued.
The night I left, I discovered what Victor Holloway was doing. He had been stealing from investors and using people like tools. When I threatened to expose him, he threatened you and our son.
Daniel went still.
I kept reading.
I made a choice. I disappeared so they would stop searching for you.
My hands shook.
But I was wrong.
The next line was darker.
They didn’t stop.
Marcus looked at me.
“What?””
I read the final paragraph.
They found another way to reach me. Through someone I trusted.
I looked at Daniel.
The same thought crossed both our minds.
“Who?””
I turned the page.
There was only one sentence.
One name.
A name that made Daniel step backward.
Because it was someone he knew.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had been standing beside him for years.
The letter said:
The person who betrayed me was not Victor Holloway.
It was your mother’s closest friend.
My breath caught.
Because there was only one person Gabriel had ever trusted enough to know our entire story.

And when I saw the name written below…
I realized the person who destroyed my family had been inside my home all along.
