Chapter 9: The Secret Behind Emily's Last Journey
Grace left the coffee shop without saying goodbye.
I watched her cross the pavement, unlock her car, and sit behind the steering wheel.
For several minutes, she didn't move.
Then she drove away.
I stood beside the window, holding the edge of the table as though the room were tilting beneath me.
Vanessa had done it again.
She had taken a moment when Grace and I were beginning to trust each other and poisoned it with a question neither of us could answer.
What happened to the baby your mother was carrying when she died?
Emily had never told me she was pregnant.
Not once.
During the weeks before the accident, she had seemed tired, but she had blamed it on work. She had been more affectionate than usual, often placing her hand against my chest while we sat on the sofa.
I remembered her asking whether I would ever want another child.
I had laughed and told her that Lily was already keeping us busy enough for three families.
Emily had smiled.
“I'm serious, Daniel.””
“So am I. We can barely get Lily to eat vegetables.””
She had rested her head against my shoulder.
“Maybe one day.””
I had kissed her forehead and changed the subject.
Now that memory returned with such clarity that it hurt.
Had she been trying to tell me something?
I called Evelyn.
She answered immediately.
“Daniel, how did the meeting go?””
“Grace agreed to a DNA test.””
“That's good news.””
“Vanessa sent her a message claiming Emily was pregnant when she died.””
Evelyn was silent.
“Do you know anything about that?””
“No. But we need to verify the claim before reacting to it.””
“Can you find out whether Emily had any medical appointments in the weeks before the accident?””
“I can help you request your own records where you're legally entitled to them, but medical confidentiality may limit access to some information. If we need other records, we'll follow the appropriate process.””
I rubbed my face.
“I can't keep discovering a new secret every time I turn around.””
“I know. But that's why we need to stop relying on Vanessa's statements and establish what the documents actually show.””
After the call, I drove to my mother's house.
Margaret opened the door wearing a pale blue sweater. She took one look at my face and stepped aside.
“What happened?””
I placed my keys on the hall table.
“Did Emily tell you she was pregnant before she died?””
My mother froze.
It was a tiny movement, but I saw it.
“Mom?””
She turned away.
“Come into the kitchen.””
My stomach tightened.
She filled the kettle, though neither of us had asked for tea. Her hands shook as she placed two cups on the counter.
“Emily came to see me about six weeks before the accident,” she said.
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to.””
“What did she say?””
Margaret sat down.
“She thought she might be pregnant. She hadn't confirmed it yet.””
“Did she take a test?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
My mother looked up at me.
“It was positive.””
The kitchen seemed to grow smaller.
I gripped the back of a chair.
“She was pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“With my child?””
“I believe so.””
I sat down slowly.
“How long had she known?””
“Only a few days when she told me.””
I stared at the table.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“She wanted to be sure. She said she had already made too many mistakes by keeping secrets, and she didn't want to frighten you with something that might not be true.””
I laughed bitterly.
“She thought telling me about a pregnancy would frighten me?””
“She was afraid you'd ask questions about the past.””
“What questions?””
Margaret looked toward the window.
“She was afraid you'd discover that she had tried to find Grace.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Emily had spent years trying to bury the past because she believed she was protecting our family. And now she had been preparing to tell me the truth, only to die before she could.
“Did she know who Grace's biological father was?””
My mother turned sharply.
“Daniel, what are you talking about?””
“The birth record has no father's name. Michael says Emily was certain I was the father, but Vanessa suggested there was another man.””
Margaret stared at me.
“Emily told me you were Grace's father.””
“Did she ever say she was uncertain?””
“No.””
“Did she ever mention another man?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she whispered, “There was someone who helped her after Grace was born.””
“Who?””
“I don't know his full name. Emily called him Robert.””
I leaned forward.
“Robert what?””
“She never told me.””
“What did he do?””
“He helped her find work. He helped her move apartments. She said he was a friend of someone at the hospital.””
My pulse quickened.
“Was he the man in the photograph?””
“I don't know.””
I took out my phone and showed her the picture of Emily standing beside the unknown man.
Margaret stared at it.
Then she covered her mouth.
“Oh, God.””
“You recognize him.””
“I think so.””
“Who is he?””
She shook her head.
“I can't remember his surname.””
“Try.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Robert Hale.””
I wrote the name down.
“Who was he?””
“I don't know, Daniel. Emily never explained. She just said he had helped her when she had nowhere else to turn.””
I stared at the photograph.
Another name.
Another person who might know what had happened.
“Did Emily ever say why she was trying to find Grace again?””
Margaret nodded.
“She said Grace's adoptive mother was ill. Emily wanted to make sure her daughter would still have someone to care for her.””
“Richard Bennett.””
“Yes. She mentioned his name.””
I looked at her.
“Did you know about the letter Emily sent him?””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
“Did you know Vanessa had been visiting Grace's family?””
“No.””
I believed her this time.
Not because she had earned my trust, but because the fear in her face looked genuine.
“Mom, I need you to tell me something. Did you ever see the letter Vanessa claimed I wrote?””
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did it look like my handwriting?””
She lowered her eyes.
“At the time, I thought it did.””
“And now?””
“Now I know it was a lie.””
I stood.
“Then we need to find Robert Hale.””
Margaret reached for my hand.
“Daniel, please don't make the same mistake Emily made.””
I looked down at her.
“What mistake?””
“Believing that the truth will fix everything.””
I gently withdrew my hand.
“No, Mom. The truth won't fix everything.””
I picked up my keys.
“But at least it will give us something real to build on.””
That evening, Evelyn called with an update.
“I found a Robert Hale connected to St. Catherine's Hospital during the relevant period. He worked for a charitable foundation that funded maternity services.””
“The Bennett Family Trust?””
“Possibly. The records show that Hale served as a consultant to several organizations, including the trust.””
“Can you contact him?””
“I've located an address, but he may no longer live there. I'll arrange for an investigator to verify it.””
I paced across my office.
“Is there anything else?””
“Yes. I spoke with the hospital's records department. They located a billing entry from a private clinic Emily visited shortly before her death.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of clinic?””
“A prenatal clinic.””
I closed my eyes.
“Was she pregnant?””
“The entry suggests she received prenatal care, but we haven't obtained the full records yet.””
“Then she was pregnant.””
“It's likely, but we should wait for confirmation.””
I looked at the desk where I had once hidden Vanessa's engagement ring.
“I need to know what happened.””
“We'll keep investigating.””
After the call, I went upstairs to Lily's room.
She was sitting at her little table, coloring a picture of a house with three windows and a garden full of flowers.
“Daddy, look.””
I sat beside her.
“That's beautiful.””
“It's for Grace. She can have the bedroom with the pink curtains if she comes to visit.””
I smiled sadly.
“I'm sure she'd like that.””
Lily studied the drawing.
“Did you meet her?””
“Yes.””
“What was she like?””
I thought about Grace's guarded expression, the way she had demanded answers, and the tears she had tried to hide.
“She was brave.””
“Was she angry?””
“A little.””
Lily considered that.
“I was angry when Vanessa hurt me.””
I swallowed.
“That's understandable.””
“But I don't want to be angry forever.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“You don't have to decide that today.””
She rested her head against my chest.
“Do you think Grace will forgive us?””
I kissed her hair.
“We haven't done anything wrong, sweetheart. But she might need time to understand that.””
Lily nodded.
Then she whispered, “Daddy, I hope she knows Mommy loved her.””
“So do I.””
The following morning, Evelyn sent me a message.
The investigator had found Robert Hale.
He was living in a retirement community outside the city.
More importantly, he had agreed to meet me.
We arranged to see him at two o'clock.
When I arrived, a receptionist led me to a small sitting room overlooking a garden. An elderly man sat in an armchair near the window, wearing a gray cardigan and holding a walking stick.
His hair was almost entirely white.
But when he looked up, I recognized the man from the photograph.
The same face.
The same eyes.
The same expression Emily had worn when she was trying to decide whether to trust someone.
“Mr. Hale?””
He nodded.
“You must be Daniel.””
I sat opposite him.
“I understand you knew my wife.””
“I did.””
“Did you know she had a daughter before she married me?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Did you know she was trying to find her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you help her?””
Robert lowered his gaze.
“Because I made a promise.””
“To whom?””
“To Emily.””
I leaned forward.
“What promise?””
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said, “That I would tell you the truth if she ever lost the chance to do it herself.””
My heart hammered.
“What truth?””
Robert reached into the pocket of his cardigan and removed a small envelope.
It was sealed.
On the front, in Emily's handwriting, were four words.
For Daniel, if necessary.
I stared at it.
“What's inside?””
Robert placed it in my hand.
“Everything she was too afraid to tell you.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter and a folded medical report.
The letter began with a sentence that made my breath catch.
Daniel, if you are reading this, then I have failed to tell you the truth while I was still alive.
I unfolded the medical report.
The date was six weeks before Emily's death.
The result was clear.
*Pregnancy confirmed.*
But beneath it was another notation.
Patient requests confidential consultation regarding prior pregnancy and paternity concerns.
I looked up.
“What does this mean?””
Robert's face had gone pale.
“It means Emily was preparing to tell you about Grace.””
He paused.
“And she had discovered something about the night Grace was born.””
“What?””
Robert leaned forward, his voice barely audible.
“She had reason to believe that the baby who was taken from her at the hospital might not have been the baby the adoption records described.””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Daniel, I don't think Grace was the only child born that night.””
My hands went numb.
“Twins?””
He nodded slowly.
“Emily believed she had given birth to two babies.””
The room went silent.
I looked down at the medical report again.
Two babies.
One adoption.
One daughter who had grown up believing her mother had abandoned her.
And another child whose existence had apparently been erased from every record.
I struggled to speak.
“Where is the other baby?””
Robert's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.””
“Then why would Emily believe there were two?””
He looked at the sealed envelope in my hand.
“Because she remembered holding both of them.””
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
Grace.
I answered immediately.
“Grace?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Daniel, I just spoke to my father.””
“Richard?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
She took a shaky breath.
“He told me Vanessa has been sending him money for years.””
I stood.
“What?””
“He said she paid him to keep certain documents hidden. Documents about my birth.””
My chest tightened.
“Grace, listen to me. There's something you need to know about your mother.””
“No,” she whispered.
“You need to listen to me first.””
Her voice broke.
“My father says that when I was born, the hospital recorded two babies.””
I closed my eyes.
“Grace—”
“He says the second baby was never listed on the adoption paperwork.””
I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

Then she asked the question that changed everything.
“Daniel, if I had a twin, where is my sister?””
