Chapter 2: The Folder on the Conference Table

The private conference room was on the hotel's twenty-third floor.
It had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, a long walnut table, and enough expensive furniture to make the room feel more like a boardroom than a hotel meeting space.
I sat near the window.
A hotel employee had brought me a glass of water and a small ice pack for my cheek.
Eleanor had insisted that I sit down before anyone discussed anything.
Marcus sat opposite me.
Vivian sat beside him.
Neither of them looked particularly pleased.
"Mother," Marcus began, loosening his tie, "I don't understand why you're making this into a family crisis.""
Eleanor placed her leather folder on the table.
"Your pregnant wife has a handprint on her face. What would you call it?""
"Vivian lost her temper.""
Vivian immediately turned toward him.
"Excuse me?""
Marcus gave her a warning look.
Eleanor noticed.
"Interesting.""
She opened the folder.
"Marcus, do you remember why I asked you to arrange this meeting?""
"Of course. The trust restructuring.""
"And who told you to invite Claire?""
"You did.""
"Correct.""
Eleanor removed a document and placed it on the table.
"Then perhaps you should explain why you told her that the meeting was about welcoming Vivian into the family.""
Marcus went still.
I looked at him.
"You knew?""
He didn't answer.
Eleanor slid another document across the table.
"Three weeks ago, I received an application requesting that Vivian Cross be appointed as the primary beneficiary of certain assets currently held under the Hale Family Trust.""
Vivian shifted in her chair.
"That was a preliminary discussion.""
Eleanor looked at her.
"I don't remember inviting you to discuss my family's assets.""
Vivian folded her hands.
"Marcus told me you were open to it.""
Eleanor turned to her son.
"Did you?""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Mother, Vivian is helping me with the company. She's been instrumental in several negotiations. This isn't personal.""
"Then why is her name on a document requesting access to your family's private investment accounts?""
"That's not what it means.""
"Then explain it.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"You're making a simple business arrangement sound suspicious.""
Eleanor gave a short, humorless laugh.
"Business arrangements do not usually involve requesting access to accounts that you do not own.""
I watched Marcus carefully.
He had always been good at talking.
When he wanted something, he could make almost any decision sound logical.
He had once convinced me that selling my grandmother's apartment was the only way to save his company.
He had promised that he would repay me.
He had promised that the property would eventually be replaced with something better.
I had believed him.
Now I wondered whether he had ever intended to repay anything.
"Eleanor," I said quietly, "can I ask you something?""
She immediately turned toward me.
"Of course.""
"Why did you ask me to come today?""
She studied my face.
"Because I wanted you present when the trust documents were reviewed.""
"Why?""
Her eyes moved briefly toward Marcus.
"Because your name is in them.""
Marcus pushed his chair backward.
"Mother, stop.""
Eleanor didn't blink.
"No.""
"You're discussing confidential family matters.""
"Claire is your wife. And the mother of your child.""
"Not for much longer.""
The room became silent.
Eleanor looked at him for several seconds.
Then she closed the folder.
"Is that what you've decided?""
"Yes.""
"And Vivian is the woman you intend to marry?""
Marcus glanced at Vivian.
"Yes.""
Vivian straightened her shoulders.
"Mrs. Hale, I know this isn't how you expected things to happen, but Marcus and I have been serious for some time.""
Eleanor looked at her.
"How long?""
Vivian hesitated.
"That's between us.""
"Then perhaps you won't mind if I ask the question differently. How long have you been involved with my son while he was married to Claire?""
Vivian's cheeks turned pink.
Marcus intervened.
"Mother, that's enough.""
Eleanor raised one hand.
"I am speaking to her.""
Vivian looked down at her handbag.
"About eleven months.""
My stomach tightened.
Eleven months.
That was almost the entire duration of my pregnancy journey.
Eleven months earlier, I had been sitting in a fertility clinic, holding Marcus's hand while a doctor explained another round of tests.
Eleven months earlier, Marcus had kissed me in the hospital parking lot and promised we would get through everything together.
Eleven months earlier, he had already been seeing her.
I stared at the table.
"Was she with you when I had the procedure?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Claire—"
"Answer me.""
He shifted uncomfortably.
"Yes.""
The room seemed to lose its air.
I remembered that morning.
The procedure had been painful. I had been frightened and exhausted.
Marcus had told me he couldn't come because an important investor meeting had been scheduled.
I had gone alone.
I had called him afterward.
He hadn't answered.
Later, he sent flowers.
I looked at Vivian.
"You were with him that day?""
She didn't respond.
I remembered another night.
The night I had received the positive pregnancy result.
Marcus had cried with me.
He had ordered dinner from my favorite restaurant and spent the entire evening talking to the baby.
I had believed it was the happiest day of our lives.
Now I wondered whether he had gone home to her afterward.
"How could you?"" I whispered.
Marcus rubbed his jaw.
"Things were complicated between us.""
"No. They weren't.""
I looked directly at him.
"You were my husband. I was trying to have your child. You were the person I trusted most in the world.""
"Claire, don't make this dramatic.""
Eleanor's hand struck the table.
"Do not tell her not to be dramatic.""
Marcus stared at his mother.
"You're taking her side?""
"I'm taking the side of basic decency.""
Vivian stood.
"I think this meeting has become inappropriate.""
Eleanor remained seated.
"Then sit down.""
Vivian looked at Marcus.
He didn't move.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that he wasn't going to protect her from Eleanor.
She slowly sat again.
Eleanor reopened the folder.
"Now, we need to discuss the financial documents.""
Marcus exhaled.
"Fine. Let's get this over with.""
Eleanor removed several printed statements.
"I requested a review of the company accounts last month. There were irregularities.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"What irregularities?""
"Transfers from the operating account to a consulting firm called Cross Strategic Holdings.""
Vivian's fingers tightened around her handbag.
I noticed.
Eleanor continued.
"The firm is registered to Vivian Cross.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That's legitimate. We use consultants.""
"Of course. But I cannot find evidence of the services described in the invoices.""
"Because you don't understand how the business operates anymore.""
Eleanor leaned back.
"Perhaps. But I understand numbers.""
She placed another sheet in front of him.
"Over the last eight months, approximately four million dollars have been transferred through that company.""
My mouth fell open.
Four million?
Marcus looked toward the window.
"Those are preliminary figures.""
"And the money went where?""
"Back into business operations.""
"Which operations?""
He said nothing.
Eleanor turned to Vivian.
"Would you like to explain?""
Vivian stood abruptly.
"This is ridiculous. I'm not going to sit here and be interrogated.""
She grabbed her handbag.
Eleanor calmly pressed a button on the conference phone.
"Security, please remain outside the room.""
Vivian froze.
"Are you serious?""
"Entirely.""
Marcus rose.
"Mother, this is enough. Vivian is leaving.""
Eleanor looked at him.
"She can leave when she has finished explaining why company money was transferred into an account associated with a luxury property in Connecticut.""
Vivian's face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Marcus saw it too.
He turned toward her.
"What property?""
Vivian's lips parted.
"Marcus, I can explain.""
"What property?""
Eleanor pulled out another document.
"A house purchased through a company registered in Delaware. The initial deposit came from the Hale Group operating account.""
Marcus stared at the paper.
"That's impossible.""
Eleanor slid the final page toward him.
"The property is registered to a company whose sole director is Vivian Cross.""
Vivian's voice became sharp.
"You told me that money was approved!""
Marcus turned to her.
"I never approved a house.""
"You said it was part of our future!""
"Not with company money!""
Their argument grew louder.
I sat completely still.
The woman who had slapped me was now arguing with my husband about a house purchased using money from his company.
And suddenly, the entire situation looked very different.
Perhaps Vivian hadn't simply stolen my husband.
Perhaps she had been stealing from him too.
Eleanor watched them argue for several seconds before speaking.
"Enough.""
Neither listened.
"Enough!""
Her voice cut through the room.
Marcus sat down.
Vivian remained standing.
Eleanor turned toward me.
"Claire, I need to ask you something.""
I looked up.
"Yes?""
"Have you signed any documents transferring your financial interests in the company or the family trust?""
I frowned.
"No.""
Marcus's head snapped toward me.
"Why are you asking her that?""
Eleanor ignored him.
"Have you signed anything in the last six months that Marcus described as routine paperwork?""
I thought about it.
A document had arrived at our house five months earlier.
Marcus had brought it into the bedroom while I was resting.
He had said it was an administrative update required by the company's accountants.
I remembered signing several pages without reading them carefully.
"I signed something," I said slowly.
Eleanor's expression changed.
"What kind of document?""
"I don't know. Marcus told me it was routine.""
She turned toward her son.
"Marcus?""
He stared at the table.
"That was a standard authorization.""
Eleanor extended her hand.
"Give me a copy.""
"It's not relevant.""
"Give me a copy.""
He didn't move.
Then Eleanor pulled a paper from the back of her folder.
"I already have one.""
She placed it in front of me.
The page carried my full legal name.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
But the heading made my blood run cold.
*IRREVOCABLE WAIVER OF SPOUSAL INTERESTS AND FUTURE BENEFICIAL CLAIMS.*
I looked at Marcus.
"What is this?""
He said nothing.
I read the heading again.
Then the first paragraph.
Then the signature line.
My hands began to shake.
"Marcus, what did you make me sign?""
He leaned forward.
"Claire, it's a technical document. You wouldn't understand the legal wording.""
Eleanor took the paper from my hands.
"She doesn't need to understand every legal term to recognize what you did.""
She looked at her son.
"You asked your pregnant wife to sign away her rights without explaining what the document actually contained.""
Marcus's voice rose.
"She signed it voluntarily!""
"After you lied about its purpose.""
Vivian suddenly spoke.
"Marcus, you told me she had already waived everything.""
I turned toward her.
She had gone pale.
Eleanor slowly looked up.
"Everything?""
Vivian realized her mistake.
Marcus stared at her.
"Stop talking.""
But Eleanor had already heard enough.
She closed the folder and stood.
"Claire, I want you to understand something. Whatever happens between you and my son, you are not leaving this room without proper legal protection.""
Then she looked at Marcus.
"And tomorrow morning, the company's independent auditors will receive every document related to those transfers.""
Marcus rose so quickly his chair struck the wall.
"You can't do that!""
Eleanor's eyes remained cold.
"I already have.""
He stared at her.
Then his gaze moved toward me.
For the first time, I saw something I had never seen in my husband before.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Fear.
Because he suddenly understood that the woman he had spent months trying to push out of his life might be the one person who could expose everything.
And as Eleanor gathered the documents, my phone vibrated again.
This time, I looked.
It was a message from an unknown number.
*Claire, don't trust Eleanor. She hasn't told you the worst part. Ask her why your baby's name appears in the original trust agreement.*
I read it twice.
Then I slowly raised my eyes toward Eleanor.
May you like
"Why is my baby's name in the trust?""
For the first time since entering the hotel, Eleanor looked genuinely shaken.
