Chapter 10: The Last Name on the DNA Report

"Marcus, whose baby is Vivian carrying?""
My question hung in the room.
Marcus stared at his phone.
The message was still visible.
*THE DNA RESULTS ARE READY. DON'T LET CLAIRE SEE THEM.*
I held out my hand.
"Give me the phone.""
"Claire, don't.""
"Give. Me. The phone.""
He stepped backward.
Daniel Cross laughed quietly.
"Well, Marcus, I suppose the truth has finally caught up with you.""
Eleanor turned toward him.
"Shut your mouth, Daniel.""
But Daniel seemed to be enjoying himself.
For years, he had controlled the Hale family through secrets, threats, and carefully arranged lies.
Now he was watching those secrets unravel.
Marcus finally looked at me.
"Vivian isn't carrying my child.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?""
He rubbed his face.
"She's carrying someone else's baby.""
"Then why have you been telling everyone you're going to marry her?""
"Because I needed her to believe I would protect her.""
I stared at him.
"You used her?""
He looked away.
"She was part of Daniel's arrangement.""
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"Be careful what you say.""
Marcus ignored him.
"Vivian told me she was pregnant four months ago. She said the baby was mine. Daniel immediately started discussing the inheritance and how we could use the pregnancy to challenge your child's position.""
I swallowed.
"But you knew the baby wasn't yours?""
"I suspected it.""
"Suspected?""
Marcus pulled a folded document from his jacket.
It was a laboratory report.
He looked at it for several seconds before handing it to David.
David examined the first page.
Then he turned to Marcus.
"Is this an authentic report?""
"Yes.""
"Did you consent to the test?""
Marcus nodded.
"Vivian told me she wanted to prove the baby was mine. I agreed to a prenatal paternity test through an independent laboratory.""
I watched David turn another page.
His expression changed.
"What?"" I asked.
He hesitated.
"Mr. Hale is not the biological father.""
I felt an unexpected wave of relief.
Not because Marcus had somehow become trustworthy again.
But because another child would not be dragged into the lies surrounding our marriage.
Then I noticed something else.
David was still reading.
"What is it?"" Eleanor asked.
He looked at Marcus.
"The report identifies another biological father.""
Marcus nodded.
"I know.""
I looked at him.
"Who?""
He closed his eyes.
"Thomas.""
Nobody moved.
I turned toward my uncle.
Thomas looked as though the ground had disappeared beneath him.
"No," he whispered.
Marcus placed both hands on the table.
"Vivian told me she had been seeing Thomas before she became involved with me.""
I looked at Thomas.
He shook his head.
"I never knew she was pregnant.""
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
"That is enough. This is a private family matter.""
Eleanor turned on him.
"Your daughter has been involved in a financial conspiracy, and now you're trying to silence everyone again?""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Vivian was trying to protect her future.""
"By lying about the father of her child?""
Daniel looked toward Thomas.
"By protecting the only person who could give her child a legitimate claim to the Hale estate.""
Thomas gripped the back of a chair.
"You're talking about my child?""
Daniel said nothing.
I looked at Marcus.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was ashamed.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Now you understand shame?""
He lowered his eyes.
For once, he had no clever response.
The police arrived several minutes later.
Two officers entered the house and separated Daniel, Marcus, and Dr. Coleman.
David provided copies of the financial records, the hospital documents, and the recorded conversation.
Helen gave a formal statement.
Thomas agreed to cooperate.
Daniel continued insisting that everything was a misunderstanding.
But when one of the officers asked him about the missing foundation money, he suddenly stopped talking.
Then another officer entered carrying a tablet.
"Mr. Cross, we have a warrant to search your residence and business offices.""
Daniel's face changed.
"On what grounds?""
"Suspected financial fraud, document forgery, and interference with medical records.""
Daniel looked toward Marcus.
"You told me those records were destroyed.""
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel's voice rose.
"You promised me!""
The officer stepped between them.
"Sir, you need to come with us.""
As Daniel was escorted toward the door, he turned toward me.
"Claire, you think you've won something?""
I didn't answer.
He continued.
"Your mother spent her entire life fighting people she couldn't defeat. You'll end up exactly like her.""
I stood beside Eleanor.
"No. I'll end up knowing what happened to her.""
For the first time, Daniel had no reply.
The front door closed behind him.
And the silence that followed felt different from every silence that had come before.
This one didn't belong to fear.
It belonged to the truth finally having room to breathe.
There was still one person I needed to speak to.
Thomas.
He sat alone in the living room after the police finished questioning him.
His hands were folded.
His eyes were fixed on the floor.
I approached slowly.
"Is it true?""
He looked up.
"Which part?""
"Vivian.""
He closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
I sat opposite him.
"How long?""
"Before she became involved with Marcus.""
"Did you love her?""
He gave a tired smile.
"I thought I did.""
"And she knew who you were?""
"Yes. Daniel introduced us.""
I looked at him.
"Was it planned?""
"I don't know anymore.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Vivian told me she wanted a relationship. She said she was tired of being treated like Daniel's daughter instead of her own person. I believed her.""
"And then?""
"She started asking questions about the Hale trust. About Robert. About the original beneficiaries.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"You knew she was using you?""
"Not at first.""
He looked at me.
"Claire, I need you to understand something. I never knew she was working with Daniel to take your inheritance. I never knew she was pregnant.""
I believed that he hadn't known about the pregnancy.
But I also knew he had kept important secrets from me.
"Why didn't you tell me about Robert?""
Thomas looked down.
"Because Margaret asked me not to.""
"She was your sister.""
He nodded.
"She was.""
"Why did you let everyone believe you were her brother?""
"Because that was how she wanted it.""
He took a deep breath.
"When Robert found out Margaret was pregnant, he wanted to acknowledge you. His family threatened to disinherit him. Then, years later, when I discovered I was also his son, Margaret helped me understand why he had hidden both of us.""
I stared at him.
"Did Robert love my mother?""
"Very much.""
"Did he regret leaving her?""
"Every day.""
Thomas reached into his pocket and removed a small photograph.
It showed Robert holding a baby.
I looked closer.
The baby was me.
On the back was a handwritten message.
For my daughter, when the world is finally safe enough for her to know me.
My eyes filled.
Thomas placed the photograph in my hands.
"He wanted you to have that.""
I pressed it against my chest.
"Why didn't he give it to me himself?""
"Because he died before he found the courage to make everything right.""
I looked toward the window.
For years, I had believed my family was small because people had left.
Now I understood that it had been kept small because people had hidden.
I wasn't sure how to feel about that.
But I knew I wanted my child to grow up differently.
Three weeks later, the independent investigation produced its first major findings.
The foundation's records confirmed that millions of dollars had been diverted through shell companies controlled by Daniel Cross.
Several signatures had been forged.
The hospital records were also referred for independent forensic examination.
Dr. Coleman provided additional testimony about the altered medication orders.
Marcus was placed under investigation for his involvement in the financial transactions.
He was no longer living at the Hale estate.
Eleanor had made that decision herself.
One afternoon, I received a letter from him.
I almost threw it away.
But curiosity won.
The letter was short.
Claire,
I know there is nothing I can say that will repair what I did.
I loved you. I know that sounds meaningless now, but I did.
I made choices because I wanted my father's approval, because I wanted money, and because I believed I could control the consequences.
I was wrong.
I don't expect forgiveness.
I only ask that you tell our child I once loved the idea of being a father, even if I failed to become the man a father should be.
Marcus.
I read it twice.
Then I placed it inside a drawer.
I didn't forgive him.
But I no longer needed to spend every waking moment imagining what I would say if I saw him again.
He had become someone from my past.
And I had a future to prepare for.
Vivian eventually contacted me.
She sent a message through David.
She wanted to meet.
I refused at first.
Then she sent another message.
I owe you the truth. Not an excuse. Just the truth.
We met in a small café near Eleanor's house.
Vivian arrived without her usual designer handbag.
She looked tired.
Her hair was tied back, and she wore a plain black sweater.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she said, "I know you hate me.""
I stirred my tea.
"I don't think about you enough to hate you anymore.""
She looked down.
"That's fair.""
"Why did you hit me?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because I was jealous.""
I looked at her.
"Of what?""
"Your position. Your marriage. Your baby. Everything.""
She swallowed.
"My father spent my entire life telling me that the Hale family owed us something. He made me believe that if I could marry Marcus, everything would finally belong to me.""
"And you believed him?""
"I wanted to.""
She took a breath.
"When I discovered I was pregnant, I thought it would give me the security I had always wanted. But when the test showed Thomas was the father, I panicked.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell him?""
"Because my father said Thomas would never accept the baby.""
"Did you even ask?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
I looked at her for a long moment.
"Your child deserves better than what we were given.""
She began crying.
"I know.""
"Then stop letting your father decide what happens to your child.""
Vivian nodded.
Before leaving, she placed a small envelope on the table.
"These are copies of messages between my father and Marcus. I thought you should have them.""
I didn't open them immediately.
"Why are you giving them to me?""
"Because I'm tired of lying.""
She stood.
Then she looked at me.
"I'm sorry I hurt you.""
I didn't tell her it was okay.
It wasn't.
But I nodded.
And for the first time, I watched her walk away without feeling that I had to compete with her for anything.
Six weeks later, I went into labor.
Eleanor was with me at the hospital.
Helen had brought a small knitted blanket.
Thomas waited outside the delivery room.
The hours were exhausting.
At one point, I gripped Eleanor's hand so tightly that she laughed through her tears.
"You're going to break my fingers.""
"Then stop telling me to breathe!""
She laughed again.
And somehow, between the pain and the exhaustion, I found myself smiling.
When the baby's first cry filled the room, everything else disappeared.
A nurse placed a tiny boy against my chest.
He had a little nose, dark hair, and a furious expression.
I began crying immediately.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Eleanor stood beside me.
Her hand covered her mouth.
"He's beautiful.""
I looked down at him.
"His name is Robert.""
Eleanor nodded.
"After his grandfather?""
I smiled.
"After the man who wanted me to know I was loved.""
A nurse gently adjusted the blanket.
"Would you like to hold him a little closer?""
I nodded.
Then I whispered:
"You don't owe anyone anything, little one. Not a name, not a fortune, not a place at somebody else's table.""
He opened his tiny hand.
His fingers wrapped around mine.
"And nobody will ever make you feel that you have to earn being loved.""
Six months later, the Hale family trust was restructured under independent legal supervision.
The protected inheritance was transferred into a separate account for my son, with strict safeguards preventing any family member from accessing it for personal purposes.
Daniel Cross was formally charged in connection with the financial investigation.
The case involving my mother's death remained under review, with the original medical records and witness testimony submitted for further examination.
Marcus accepted a settlement agreement and surrendered his remaining controlling interest in the company.
He had requested supervised contact with Robert.
I agreed to let the lawyers handle that process when the time came.
Thomas began rebuilding his relationship with me.
It wasn't easy.
Trust doesn't return simply because someone finally tells the truth.
But he showed up.
He came to Robert's first birthday.
He brought a wooden rocking horse and spent nearly an hour assembling it incorrectly.
Eleanor laughed so hard she had to sit down.
Helen brought a cake decorated with tiny blue stars.
And I watched them all gathered around my son.
For the first time, our family wasn't built around secrets.
It was built around the people who had chosen to stay.
That evening, after everyone had left, I found a final envelope among the documents David had returned.
It was addressed in my mother's handwriting.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a short note.
My darling Claire,
If you ever discover the truth, don't spend your life punishing yourself for what other people did.
You were never responsible for their greed.
You were never responsible for their lies.
And you were never responsible for making them love you.
Build a life where your child never has to wonder whether he deserves to be protected.
Love,
Mom.
I sat on the nursery floor and cried.
Not because I was broken.
Because, for the first time in years, I felt whole.
Outside, the evening rain tapped gently against the windows.
Robert slept peacefully in his crib.
I placed my mother's letter inside the wooden box and closed the brass lock.
Then I kissed my son's forehead.
Marcus had once told me to leave the Oakmont Luxury Hotel because I was making a scene.
He had watched another woman strike me while I stood seven months pregnant.
He had chosen money over loyalty, appearances over truth, and power over the family he claimed to love.
He thought that day would be the moment I lost everything.
He was wrong.
That was the day I finally stopped begging someone to protect me.
May you like
And started protecting what mattered most.
*My son. My mother's truth. And the future nobody would ever be allowed to steal from us again.*
