Chapter 8: The Father Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
For ten years, I had lived with the same memory.
The phone call.
The hospital.
The silence afterward.
My father was gone.
At least, that was what I had been told.
I remembered standing in the hallway outside my mother’s hospital room when the doctor approached me.
The serious expression.
The careful words.
The way adults speak when they are trying to soften something impossible.
There had been an accident.
My father didn’t survive.
My mother followed two years later.
And I became the person who carried their memories.
Their photographs.
Their old watches.
Their stories.
But never them.
Because they were gone.
Dead.
That was the one thing in my life I had never questioned.
Until Daniel Cross looked me in the eyes and told me my father was alive.
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
Daniel stared at me.
“I knew you’d say that.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You came here, threatened my family, lied about Maya, and now you expect me to believe my dead father is alive?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“I don’t care if you believe me.””
“Then why tell me?””
“Because he’s the reason I came back.””
The cold air suddenly felt heavier.
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“What did you do?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa.
“She never told him, did she?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Stop.””
“Tell him.””
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice sharpened.
“You wanted secrets? Fine. Let him hear all of them.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“What does my father have to do with any of this?””
She looked broken.
“I don’t know everything.””
I stared at her.
“That’s not an answer.””
She closed her eyes.
“Ethan…”
“Not anymore.””
The words surprised even me.
Because I wasn’t saying them out of anger.
I was saying them because I was exhausted.
Exhausted from finding out my life had been built on missing pieces.
“Tell me the truth.””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
Then at me.
“When you met me, I didn’t know who you were.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“I knew your name.””
My heart sank.
“But I didn’t know your family.””
The street became silent.
“What are you saying?””
She looked down.
“Daniel introduced me to information about you.””
My stomach twisted.
“Information?””
She nodded.
“Your parents’ estate. Your family history. The trust.””
I stared at her.
“You knew about my family’s money?””
“Not at first.””
“Not at first?””
She started crying.
“I swear.””
I stepped back.
“How long?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice cracked.
“Before Maya was born.””
Everything stopped.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know the details.””
“But you knew I came from money.””
She nodded.
The pain that hit me was different from before.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t just questioning my marriage.
I was questioning the beginning of my entire life with her.
“Was I a choice?””
Vanessa looked up.
“What?””
“Was I someone you loved?””
Her face collapsed.
“Ethan…”
“Or was I just someone who could save you?””
“No.””
But her answer came too quickly.
And I hated that I noticed.
“I did love you.””
I looked away.
“Maybe.””
The word hurt her.
But I couldn’t take it back.
Behind us, the front door creaked.
Maya stood there again.
She had heard enough.
“Dad.””
I turned.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Are you mad at me?””
The question shattered everything.
I immediately walked toward her.
“No.””
She looked uncertain.
“But everyone keeps saying things about me.””
I knelt down.
“Maya, none of this is your fault.””
“Then why do adults keep fighting because of me?””
My throat tightened.
Because there was no answer a ten-year-old deserved.
“You are not the reason people make bad choices.””
She looked at me.
“Promise?””
I nodded.
“I promise.””
She hugged me.
And for a moment, everything else disappeared.
Not Daniel.
Not Vanessa.
Not the secrets.
Just my daughter.
My little girl.
When she finally went back upstairs, I turned around.
“Now explain my father.””
Daniel leaned against the railing.
“Your father was involved with the trust.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You know the legal version.””
He paused.
“You don’t know the real reason it existed.””
Rebecca looked uncomfortable.
“You don’t need to do this.””
Daniel ignored her.
“Your father discovered someone was trying to access the trust before Maya was born.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
But his eyes moved toward Vanessa.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Ethan, no.””
“Was it you?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t know.””
Daniel laughed.
“Not at first.””
I looked at him.
“What are you talking about?””
He stepped closer.
“Your father found out Maya existed.””
My heart stopped.
“He knew about Maya?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“She told him.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
I turned.
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because I needed help.””
“With what?””
“With Daniel.””
The answer made sense.
But not enough.
“My father helped you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did everyone think he died?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because Daniel tried to ruin him.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Careful.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“No, Daniel.””
She looked at me.
“You need to know.””
She took a breath.
“Your father discovered Daniel had been manipulating financial records connected to several families.””
I frowned.
“What families?””
“Families connected to the adoption agency.””
A terrible thought formed.
“He was stealing?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Using information about children and inheritance.””
My eyes moved toward Maya’s room.
“And Maya?””
“She was one of the cases he targeted.””
I felt sick.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you come back when you learned about the trust?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he couldn’t.
I looked at him.
“You knew Maya was connected to my family.””
“Yes.””
“And you still claimed to be her father.””
His face tightened.
“I am her biological father.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re a man who saw a child as an opportunity.””
Daniel’s expression turned angry.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Maybe.””
I held up the documents.
“But I know what you’re showing me.””
For the first time, Daniel looked uncertain.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The screen showed a name I hadn’t seen in years.
A name that shouldn’t have existed.
*Dad.*
My hands started shaking.
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa whispered:
“Ethan…”
I stared at the screen.
Impossible.
A dead man couldn’t call.
But the phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Daniel took a step backward.
Rebecca covered her mouth.
And Maya appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Dad?””
I couldn’t move.
The call continued.
Then voicemail started.
A man’s voice filled the silence.
A voice I remembered from childhood.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakable.
“Ethan…”
My knees almost gave out.
“If you’re hearing this, it means they finally found out.””
I looked at everyone.
Nobody moved.
My father continued.
“I’m sorry I disappeared.””
A pause.
A shaky breath.
“But I had to.””
The recording continued.
“Because the person who destroyed our family was never Daniel.””
My blood ran cold.
May you like
The next sentence changed everything.
“Ethan… it was your mother.””
