Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden in the Bank Account
I stared at the screen for almost a full minute.
I didn’t blink.
I didn’t move.
I just kept reading the same words over and over, hoping somehow they would rearrange themselves into something harmless.
They didn’t.
*Payment received. Thank you for keeping our secret.*
My hand hovered over the trackpad.
The transaction details sat beneath it like evidence in a courtroom.
The amount wasn’t small.
It wasn’t a forgotten subscription.
It wasn’t a mistake.
It was five thousand dollars.
Five thousand dollars transferred from our family account to a name I recognized immediately.
*Daniel Cross.*
My wife’s former business partner.
And my former friend.
I leaned back in my chair.
The room around me suddenly felt unfamiliar.
The family photos on my office shelf.
The framed picture of Vanessa and me from our anniversary trip.
The drawing Maya made when she was seven.
Everything looked like it belonged to someone else.
Because for the first time in years, I wondered if I actually knew my own wife.
I picked up my phone.
My thumb hovered over Vanessa’s name.
I wanted to call her.
I wanted to demand an explanation.
I wanted to hear her say there was a reasonable answer.
But another part of me stopped.
The part that had just watched my daughter stand in the snow.
The part that remembered Maya saying, I tried to tell you.
I locked my phone screen.
Then I opened the bank records again.
I searched Daniel’s name.
One transaction appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
My heartbeat grew louder with every line.
There were six payments over the last four months.
Different amounts.
Different dates.
All from the same account.
Our account.
The account where my salary went.
The account I trusted Vanessa to manage because she had always told me she was better with finances.
I had believed her.
I had been proud of her.
I thought giving her control meant giving her respect.
Now I wondered if it had simply made things easier to hide.
A sound came from the hallway.
The bedroom door opened.
Vanessa stood there.
She had changed out of her winter coat.
Her hair was no longer perfect.
Her makeup was slightly faded.
For the first time all day, she looked less like the confident woman everyone saw outside and more like someone who knew she had been caught.
“You’re still awake,” she said.
I closed the laptop.
“Where were you?””
She frowned.
“What?””
“After we got home.””
Her expression tightened.
“I took the kids upstairs. Then I made dinner.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You went downstairs for twenty minutes.””
She stared at me.
“So?””
“So where were you?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Ethan, what is this?””
I looked at her.
“That’s what I’m asking.””
Silence filled the room.
Then she sighed.
“You’re upset because of today.””
“I’m upset because I found out my daughter has been walking around without a coat while money disappears from our account.””
Her face hardened.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“You’re choosing her side.””
I stared at her.
“Her side?””
“Yes.””
She stepped into the room.
“You always do this.””
“Do what?””
“Make me the villain.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“I found out our daughter was freezing outside while her siblings bought expensive clothes.””
“She wasn’t freezing.””
“She was shaking.””
“She’s sensitive.””
I looked away for a second.
Because hearing my wife describe our child that way hurt more than I expected.
“Maya is not the problem here.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“She has always needed more attention.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
She looked frustrated.
“It means she’s different.””
“She’s ten.””
“She’s emotional.””
“She’s a child.””
Vanessa walked toward the dresser.
“You don’t understand what it’s like managing three children.””
I followed her with my eyes.
“You mean two children.””
She stopped.
“What?””
“You always say three.””
Her face changed slightly.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Twist my words.””
I stood up.
“Vanessa, I saw what happened today.””
She turned around.
“You saw one moment.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I saw a pattern.””
For a second, something flashed across her face.
Fear.
Just a second.
Then it disappeared.
“You’re being dramatic.””
The same words she had used on Maya.
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Who is Daniel Cross?””
The room went completely still.
Vanessa stopped breathing for a moment.
It was small.
Almost invisible.
But I saw it.
“You checked my account?””
“Our account.””
She looked away.
“Why are you asking about Daniel?””
“Because you sent him five thousand dollars.””
Her face lost color.
Only for a moment.
Then she recovered.
“He needed help.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“Daniel Cross needed help?””
“Yes.””
“The same Daniel Cross who disappeared after your company failed?””
“He was going through a hard time.””
“The same Daniel Cross who blamed everyone else when investors pulled out?””
“Ethan—”
“The same Daniel Cross you told me you hadn’t spoken to in years?””
Vanessa looked angry now.
“You went through my private conversations?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I looked at our bank account.””
She said nothing.
That silence told me more than any confession could.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I knew you wouldn’t understand.””
I stared at her.
“Understand what?””
She looked down.
Then quietly said, “He needed money.””
“For what?””
“He was struggling.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked up.
“Not everything is about you.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
Because that was the moment I realized something.
Vanessa wasn’t sorry.
She wasn’t shocked.
She wasn’t even trying to explain.
She was angry that I had discovered it.
“Does Daniel have something to do with Maya?”” I asked.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
“The money.””
“What are you talking about?””
“Is that why Maya didn’t get a coat?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Too fast.
A little too fast.
I noticed.
“Then explain.””
“There’s nothing to explain.””
“Five thousand dollars?””
“Ethan.””
“Six payments.””
Her face froze.
“You looked at everything?””
“Yes.””
She sat down on the edge of the bed.
For the first time, she looked nervous.
But then her phone buzzed.
Both of us looked at it.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
From Daniel.
Vanessa reached for it quickly.
Too quickly.
But I had already seen the preview.
Three words.
Three words that made my entire body go cold.
*She told him everything.*
Vanessa grabbed the phone.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
“It’s nothing.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“It’s not nothing.””
She locked the screen.
“You need to trust me.””
I looked at her.
After everything that happened that day, those words felt almost insulting.
“Trust you?””
“Yes.””
“After hiding money?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“After lying about Maya?””
Her eyes hardened.
“I never lied.””
“You told me she needed new clothes.””
“She did.””
“But she didn’t get them.””
Vanessa stood.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“Thinking you know everything.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t respond.
Instead, she walked past me toward the door.
“Where are you going?””
“To sleep.””
“Vanessa.””
She stopped.
I held up my phone.
“Who is ‘she’?””
Her shoulders went stiff.
I watched her carefully.
“Who told Daniel everything?””
For several seconds, she stood there silently.
Then she slowly turned around.
And the look on her face wasn’t anger anymore.
It was fear.
“Ethan,” she whispered.
My chest tightened.
“What?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Toward the bedrooms.
Toward where Maya was sleeping.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Your daughter wasn’t the only one who found out the truth.””
I couldn’t move.
“What truth?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, a sound came from the hallway.
A small creak.
Like someone had been standing there.
Listening.
We both turned.
The hallway was dark.
Empty.
At least, it looked empty.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived.
Not from Vanessa.
Not from Daniel.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
And my hands started shaking.
May you like
Because the message contained only one sentence.
*Ask your wife why Maya’s birth certificate has a different father’s name on it.*
