Chapter 6: The Woman Who Held the Missing Pieces

Rebecca stood beneath the streetlight like she had walked out of a memory I was never supposed to see.

She wasn’t young.

She wasn’t intimidating.

She didn’t look like someone who had come to destroy a family.

She looked tired.

The kind of tired that comes from carrying something heavy for too long.

But Vanessa’s reaction told me everything.

My wife looked like she had seen a ghost.

“Rebecca…”

Her voice barely existed.

The woman stopped several feet away.

“I told you this day would come.””

Daniel looked between them.

For the first time since he arrived, he wasn’t in control.

“What are you doing here?””

Rebecca ignored him.

Her eyes stayed on Vanessa.

“I tried to give you time.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Please.””

That one word surprised me.

Not because Vanessa said it.

Because of how she said it.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Desperate.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Who are you?””

She turned toward me.

And her expression softened.

“You’re Ethan.””

I felt a chill.

Not because she knew my name.

Because she said it like she had known about me for years.

“Yes.””

She nodded slowly.

“I’m Rebecca Cross.””

My stomach tightened.

Cross.

Daniel’s last name.

His wife.

The woman he had abandoned.

The woman Vanessa had never mentioned.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Rebecca, you need to leave.””

She looked at him.

“Funny.””

Her voice was calm.

“You always say that when someone knows the truth.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

She looked around at the house.

“At finally telling people what happened?””

Nobody spoke.

The snow continued falling.

Tiny white pieces disappearing against the dark pavement.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew her?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Rebecca answered before she could.

“Because I was there.””

My heart tightened.

“There for what?””

Rebecca looked at Vanessa.

“The night Maya was born.””

Everything went silent.

I had heard that sentence too many times that night.

Every answer only created more questions.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca took a slow breath.

“It means Vanessa has been protecting the wrong person.””

Daniel scoffed.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Rebecca turned toward him.

“You’re still doing it.””

“Doing what?””

“Pretending everyone else is the problem.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

A small crack appeared.

Anger.

Fear.

Regret.

I noticed.

Rebecca walked closer.

“Ethan, you deserve to know what happened.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Rebecca.””

“No.””

Rebecca’s voice was firm.

“You had ten years.””

She looked at me.

“You have the right to know.””

I glanced toward the house.

Toward where Maya was sleeping.

Every instinct I had screamed to protect her.

But I also knew something.

Secrets had already hurt her.

Keeping more of them wouldn’t save her.

“Tell me.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Ten years ago, Daniel and Vanessa were involved.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked down.

“I know that part.””

“No,” Rebecca said.

“You know they had a relationship.””

She paused.

“You don’t know why it ended.””

I waited.

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Because Daniel wasn’t the man Vanessa thought he was.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Here we go.””

Rebecca continued.

“When Vanessa found out she was pregnant, Daniel promised he would leave me.””

My jaw tightened.

“He told her he loved her.””

Vanessa looked away.

“But when he realized a child was involved, everything changed.””

Rebecca’s voice became quieter.

“He didn’t want a baby. He didn’t want responsibility. He wanted his life to stay exactly the same.””

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t deny it.

That bothered me.

“So he disappeared?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“He did something worse.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

I turned to her.

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

Rebecca did.

“He tried to convince Vanessa to give Maya up.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You told her a baby would ruin both of your lives.””

“I was scared.””

“You threatened to leave.””

“I was confused.””

“You told her she would never find anyone else.””

Daniel’s face darkened.

“Enough.””

Rebecca didn’t stop.

“And when Vanessa refused, you disappeared.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

She nodded slowly.

A tear rolled down her face.

“I was alone.””

The words were barely audible.

“I was pregnant. I didn’t know what to do.””

I felt anger toward her.

But also sadness.

Because suddenly I saw a young version of my wife.

A scared woman.

A woman who made terrible choices.

“But where was I?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You weren’t supposed to be part of this.””

That hurt.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca answered.

“It means Vanessa met you after Maya was born.””

I froze.

“No.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

She couldn’t look at me.

“No.””

I repeated it.

“You told me we met before.””

“I was afraid.””

The words came quietly.

“Afraid you would see me differently.””

I stepped back.

“You lied about when we met?””

She nodded.

The pain was almost physical.

Because suddenly the beginning of our entire relationship felt uncertain.

The coffee shop.

The conversations.

The first date.

The moment I thought our lives started.

Maybe they had started before I even knew.

“Why?””

Vanessa cried.

“Because I knew what you would think.””

“What?””

“That I was broken.””

I stared at her.

“And instead you let me believe I was the father from the beginning.””

“I didn’t plan it.””

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“You were kind.””

The answer was simple.

And painful.

“You met Maya. You loved her immediately.””

I remembered.

The first time I held her.

She was six months old.

Vanessa had told me she was her niece.

A family emergency.

A complicated situation.

I remembered how Maya grabbed my finger.

How she smiled.

How I knew.

Even then.

I knew.

“She needed someone,” Vanessa whispered.

“And I thought…”

She stopped.

“You thought I could replace him.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought you could become what he wasn’t.””

I looked away.

The truth hurt.

But there was one question still burning.

“The test.””

Everyone went quiet.

I looked at Rebecca.

“The DNA test.””

She nodded.

“That’s why I came.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did you do?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“What you should have expected.””

She pulled a folder from her bag.

“I found the original hospital records.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Original records?””

“Yes.””

She handed them to me.

I hesitated.

Then took them.

Inside were copies.

Hospital forms.

Documents.

Names.

Dates.

My eyes scanned the pages.

Then stopped.

A line near the bottom.

*Father: Ethan Miller.*

I couldn’t breathe.

The world became strangely quiet.

“She’s mine?””

My voice cracked.

Rebecca nodded.

“Biologically, yes.””

I looked at Vanessa.

All the pain.

All the anger.

All the confusion.

It collided together.

“She knew?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“I found out later.””

“When?””

Her silence answered before her words did.

“Six years ago.””

I stared at her.

“Six years?””

She nodded.

“You knew I was her father?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was scared.””

The same words.

Again.

Always fear.

Always secrets.

Always me finding out too late.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked toward Maya’s room.

“Because by then Daniel had already started threatening me.””

I frowned.

“What does Daniel have to do with this?””

Rebecca’s face changed.

She looked at Daniel.

“He knows.””

“Knows what?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“He knows Maya is not his daughter.””

I looked at him.

“Then why pretend?””

Rebecca answered quietly:

“Because Daniel doesn’t want Maya.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then what does he want?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel finally said:

“Something Vanessa has.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He smiled.

But there was no confidence left.

Only desperation.

“The evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Rebecca looked at me.

And the fear returned to her eyes.

“Evidence that Daniel has spent ten years trying to destroy.””

The front door behind us suddenly opened.

Maya stood there.

She had been listening.

Again.

But this time she wasn’t crying.

She was holding something.

A small wooden box.

My heart sank.

“Maya?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at Daniel.

Then at me.

“I know what evidence he wants.””

Nobody moved.

I walked toward her slowly.

“Maya, what are you holding?””

She opened the box.

Inside was an old hospital bracelet.

And a folded piece of paper.

Her voice trembled.

“Mom hid this.””

Vanessa’s face went white.

“Maya…”

My daughter looked at me.

“Dad, I found it years ago.””

I unfolded the paper.

May you like

And the first line made every person standing outside my house go silent.
