Chapter 7: The Room Beneath The Old House

The old Harris family house had been abandoned for twelve years.

But when General Alexander Harris stood outside the rusted iron gate, it felt like he had never truly left.

The house sat at the edge of a quiet road surrounded by overgrown trees and forgotten memories.

The windows were dark.

The garden was dying.

The paint on the wooden walls had peeled away.

Yet Alexander could still see it.

A younger version of himself walking through that front door.

His daughter Amelia running down the hallway.

His father sitting in his study, reading military reports late into the night.

A lifetime ago.

A different family.

A different man.

He turned off the engine.

For several seconds, he remained inside the vehicle.

The message still sat on his phone.

*Trust no one.*

The warning should have made him leave.

It should have made him call for backup.

But Alexander knew Daniel.

Or at least he thought he did.

And after everything he had learned, he no longer trusted his own memories.

He stepped out.

The night air was cold.

The house waited silently.

“General.””

Alexander turned.

Captain Elena Brooks stood behind him.

He immediately frowned.

“I told you to stay at the hospital.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you here?””

She held out a small device.

“Because you also told me to protect your family.””

Alexander stared at her.

“I said come alone.””

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“You said Daniel wanted you alone.””

A pause.

“That doesn’t mean I have to let him get what he wants.””

Despite everything, Alexander almost smiled.

Elena had always been one of the few people in the military who challenged him.

That was why he trusted her.

Or at least, he used to.

“Did anyone follow you?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

She hesitated.

Only briefly.

But Alexander noticed.

“What?””

Elena looked away.

“General…”

“What?””

“There’s something you need to know.””

The seriousness in her voice made him stop.

“What is it?””

“The photo Daniel sent you.””

“Yes.””

“I checked the metadata.””

Alexander waited.

“It wasn’t taken twenty years ago.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“It was edited.””

The cold air suddenly felt heavier.

“Explain.””

“The picture of Daniel with Amelia and Ruby.””

Elena looked at him.

“The image is real.””

Alexander frowned.

“But?””

“But someone added something.””

“What?””

“A timestamp.””

Silence.

Alexander understood immediately.

Someone wanted him to believe something that wasn’t true.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

He looked at the old house.

“But someone wants me here.””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

They moved toward the entrance.

The front door was already open.

Alexander stopped.

He stared at it.

“I locked this door myself.””

“When?””

“Before we sold the property.””

Elena looked inside.

“So someone has been here.””

Alexander stepped forward.

The hallway smelled like dust and old wood.

But underneath it was something else.

Fresh.

Someone had recently been inside.

They moved carefully through the house.

Every room brought back memories.

The kitchen where Amelia used to bake cookies.

The living room where his father gave him his first military uniform.

The staircase where Amelia had sat crying the night before she left.

Alexander stopped.

He could almost hear her voice.

You never choose us.

He closed his eyes.

Then opened them.

No.

He couldn’t live in the past.

Not anymore.

“General.””

Elena pointed.

A light.

A faint glow coming from the study.

Alexander entered.

The room was exactly as he remembered.

The desk.

The bookshelf.

The old chair where his father used to sit.

But something was different.

A book was placed on the desk.

Open.

Waiting.

Alexander approached slowly.

On the page was a handwritten note.

One sentence.

*“You finally came back.””*

His expression hardened.

“Daniel.””

Elena scanned the room.

“He’s here.””

“No.””

Alexander looked around.

“He wants us to think he is.””

He examined the desk.

Then he noticed something.

A small mark carved into the wood.

A symbol.

His father’s symbol.

Alexander touched it.

A memory returned.

His father had shown him that mark when he was a child.

“A promise,” his father had said.

“What kind?””

Alexander whispered:

“The kind you keep when everyone else breaks theirs.””

He pushed against the carved symbol.

A small click echoed.

The bookshelf moved.

Elena stepped back.

“There’s a hidden passage.””

Alexander stared.

His father’s secret room.

The room Amelia had mentioned.

The room nobody knew about.

They entered.

The space beneath the house was smaller than expected.

A single lamp hung from the ceiling.

A desk.

Several boxes.

And one old military journal.

Alexander stopped breathing.

The journal had his father’s name written on it.

*Colonel Richard Harris.*

He reached out.

His fingers touched the cover.

For twenty years, he believed he knew the man who raised him.

Now he wasn’t sure he knew anything.

He opened it.

The first page contained a date.

Three days before his father’s death.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

*If you are reading this, then Daniel failed to destroy everything.*

Alexander froze.

Elena looked over.

“Sir?””

He continued reading.

*I made mistakes. Bigger mistakes than anyone will ever know. But Amelia was right. She found the truth before I was ready to reveal it.*

Alexander’s heart raced.

His daughter had been telling the truth.

Another page.

*Daniel believes power comes from controlling information. He is wrong. Information survives. Truth survives.*

Alexander turned the page.

Then stopped.

Because the next sentence was about him.

*My son Alexander cannot know. Not yet.*

His breath caught.

“Why?””

Elena looked at him.

“What does it say?””

Alexander didn’t answer.

He kept reading.

*If Alexander learns the truth before he is prepared, Daniel will use his loyalty against him. He will make him choose between family and duty.*

Alexander lowered the journal.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Daniel had spent twenty years making him believe he had to choose.

Country.

Or family.

Another page.

*The night I die, do not believe the report. I will not die by accident.*

Alexander felt a chill.

Elena whispered:

“He knew.””

Alexander nodded.

His father knew someone wanted him dead.

Then he saw the final entry.

The last words his father ever wrote.

*The person closest to me is the one who betrayed me.*

Alexander stared.

Closest.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

A sound suddenly came from behind them.

A floorboard.

They turned.

A figure stood at the entrance of the hidden room.

Alexander immediately raised his weapon.

“Don’t move.””

The figure stepped into the light.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying the weight of two decades.

Alexander’s hand began shaking.

Because the face in front of him was impossible.

“Hello, son.””

The gun lowered slightly.

The voice.

The eyes.

The ring.

Everything.

“No…”

The man looked at him sadly.

“I know this is hard.””

Alexander couldn’t breathe.

“Who are you?””

The man looked down.

Then back at him.

“I’m the man you buried.””

Silence.

Elena stared.

Alexander couldn’t move.

Because standing in front of him was the person who had haunted his memories for twenty years.

His father.

Richard Harris.

Alive.

“I don’t understand.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You were never supposed to find this room.””

Alexander’s anger finally broke through the shock.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

Richard’s face fell.

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

Alexander’s voice echoed through the hidden room.

“My daughter thought I abandoned her.””

“I know.””

“My family suffered.””

“I know.””

“You watched that happen?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I spent twenty years trying to stop it.””

Alexander stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

Richard looked at the journal.

“Because Daniel made sure I couldn’t.””

A cold silence followed.

Then Richard said the words that changed everything.

“Alexander, Daniel Voss is not the person you should be afraid of.””

Alexander frowned.

“What?””

Richard stepped closer.

“The person who helped him destroy our family…”

He looked directly into his son’s eyes.

“…is someone you still trust.””

Before Alexander could ask who, the lights in the hidden room suddenly went out.

A gunshot exploded in the darkness.

May you like

And when the emergency lights turned on seconds later…

Richard Harris was gone.
