Chapter 6: The Father Who Was Never Buried

The image remained frozen on the tablet screen.

A man standing outside Saint Mary’s Hospital.

A man wearing a ring that belonged to Colonel Richard Harris.

A man who looked impossibly similar to the father Alexander had buried twenty years ago.

Nobody spoke.

Not Alexander.

Not Amelia.

Not Captain Elena.

Even Ruby, standing near the doorway, could feel that something was wrong.

Children did not always understand adult secrets.

But they understood fear.

And everyone in that room was afraid.

“Zoom in again,” Alexander said.

Elena obeyed.

The image enlarged.

The man’s face became clearer.

Older.

More tired.

Lines around his eyes.

Gray hair.

But the resemblance was undeniable.

Alexander stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Amelia looked at him.

“I told you.””

He turned.

“What?””

“I told you I saw him die.””

Her hands were shaking.

“I was there.””

Alexander stared at his daughter.

Twenty years ago, Amelia had been eighteen.

A teenager who had lost her grandmother.

A teenager who had lost her grandfather.

A teenager who had watched her family fall apart.

But now she was saying something impossible.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Amelia looked down.

“I was at the old house.””

“When?””

“The night he died.””

Alexander listened carefully.

Every instinct he had from decades in the military told him this mattered.

Details mattered.

Small things mattered.

“Why were you there?””

“Because I went to confront him.””

“Your grandfather?””

She nodded.

“I found the documents. I knew something was wrong.””

Alexander looked at the tablet again.

“And?””

“He was angry.””

“Angry?””

“He said I didn’t understand what I found.””

Amelia swallowed.

“He told me some secrets were buried for a reason.””

Alexander felt a chill.

“What happened next?””

“I heard a crash.””

“Where?””

“The study.””

She closed her eyes.

“When I ran in, he was on the floor.””

Silence.

“What did you see?””

“Blood.””

Alexander’s expression changed.

“He was alive?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“He was gone.””

The room became silent.

“But the police report said accident.””

Amelia looked at him.

“Because that’s what Daniel told them.””

Alexander froze.

“Daniel was there?””

“Yes.””

His jaw tightened.

“He arrived after.””

“After what?””

“After I found him.””

Alexander looked at Elena.

“Get every record from that night.””

“Sir?””

“Every police report. Every medical report. Every witness statement.””

Elena nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

She turned to leave.

“Captain.””

She stopped.

“Do not tell anyone why.””

Her expression changed.

She understood.

A secret investigation.

Not a military operation.

Something much more personal.

“Yes, sir.””

After she left, Ruby slowly walked toward Alexander.

“Is that man your dad?””

Alexander looked down.

He didn’t know how to answer.

Because every answer felt impossible.

“I don’t know.””

Ruby tilted her head.

“Adults say that a lot.””

The comment surprised him.

“What?””

“My mom says when adults say ‘I don’t know,’ sometimes they mean ‘I’m scared.’”

Alexander almost smiled.

Almost.

Because she was right.

“I am scared.””

Ruby looked at him.

“Why?””

He looked toward Amelia.

“Because I spent my whole life believing something that might not be true.””

Ruby thought about that.

Then she said:

“Maybe you can find out.””

Simple.

A child’s solution.

But somehow, it was exactly what he needed.

Two hours later, Alexander stood outside Amelia’s hospital room.

Ruby was asleep in a chair beside her mother’s bed.

The stuffed rabbit rested in her arms.

For the first time all day, she looked peaceful.

Alexander watched her.

His granddaughter.

A child he should have known from the moment she was born.

A child whose first steps, first words, and first day of school he had missed.

The guilt was almost unbearable.

“You’re blaming yourself.””

Amelia’s voice came quietly.

He turned.

She was awake.

“I should have found you.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised him.

She didn’t soften it.

She didn’t protect him.

But she continued.

“But you’re not the only one who lost twenty years.””

Alexander sat down.

“I don’t know how to fix this.””

Amelia looked at him.

“Neither do I.””

For a moment, they were not a general and a witness.

Not enemies.

Just a father and daughter who had missed too much time.

“I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Why didn’t you tell Ruby about me?””

Amelia looked at her sleeping daughter.

“Because I didn’t know what to tell her.””

“You could have told her I existed.””

She looked back.

“And say what?””

Alexander didn’t answer.

Because there was no easy answer.

“My grandfather disappeared,” Amelia said softly.

“Not because he died.””

The words shocked him.

“What?””

“He disappeared because Daniel wanted everyone to believe he was gone.””

Alexander stared.

“You think my father is alive?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked at the tablet.

“But I know Daniel.””

“How?””

“Because he spent years watching us.””

The room became colder.

“He knew where we lived?””

“Yes.””

“He followed you?””

“I think so.””

Alexander stood.

“Why?””

Amelia looked at him.

“Because of what I found.””

“The documents.””

“Yes.””

“What did they reveal?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“That your father wasn’t the person everyone thought he was.””

Alexander’s face hardened.

“You mean corrupt?””

“I mean complicated.””

That answer surprised him.

“Explain.””

Amelia looked toward the window.

“Your father was involved in something illegal.””

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“But?””

“But he was also trying to expose it.””

The words landed slowly.

“He was investigating?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because someone was inside the system.””

Alexander felt a familiar military instinct activate.

A threat.

An unknown enemy.

Someone hidden.

“Who?””

Amelia shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Before Alexander could respond, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He stared at it.

Then answered.

“Who is this?””

A familiar voice replied.

“Still asking questions after all these years, Alexander?””

His blood ran cold.

“Daniel.””

A soft laugh.

“I knew you’d find her eventually.””

Alexander’s grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I want answers.””

Daniel laughed again.

“No.””

The confidence in his voice was disturbing.

“You want revenge.””

Alexander said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“That’s the difference between you and your father.””

The mention of Richard made Alexander freeze.

“You knew my father.””

“I knew him better than you did.””

“Where is he?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“You really think that man in the picture is your father?””

Alexander looked at the tablet.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying you should stop chasing ghosts.””

“Answer me.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“Your father wasn’t the victim.””

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“He made a deal.””

“With who?””

“Ask Amelia.””

Alexander looked at his daughter.

She had gone pale.

Because she had heard Daniel’s voice through the phone.

“Why are you doing this?”” Alexander demanded.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Because your family destroyed mine.””

The call ended.

Alexander stood frozen.

Amelia whispered:

“He knows.””

“What?””

“He knows you found out.””

A notification appeared on Alexander’s phone.

A new message.

From Daniel.

One photo.

Alexander opened it.

His heart stopped.

It was a photograph taken years ago.

A young Amelia.

A young Ruby.

And standing behind them…

Was Daniel Voss.

Holding a document.

Below the image was a message.

*“You want the truth about your father? Come to the old Harris house tonight. Come alone.””*

Alexander stared at the words.

Amelia immediately shook her head.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“I have to.””

“He wants you there.””

“Yes.””

“Alone.””

Alexander was silent.

Because he knew what she was saying.

This was a trap.

But then he looked at Ruby.

At Amelia.

At the family he had lost.

And he realized something.

Twenty years ago, he had walked away because he believed he was protecting them.

He would not make that mistake again.

“I’m going.””

Amelia grabbed his arm.

“Alexander, don’t.””

He looked at her.

For the first time in twenty years, he spoke to her not as a commander.

Not as a man defending his pride.

But as her father.

“I lost you once.””

His voice broke.

“I won’t lose you again.””

Then he walked toward the door.

But as he reached it, his phone buzzed one more time.

Another message.

Not from Daniel.

From an unknown number.

Three words appeared on the screen.

*“Trust no one.””*

And beneath them was a photo.

A photo of Alexander himself.

Taken that same night.

May you like

Inside the hospital.

From someone standing only a few feet away.
