Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Too Much
Nobody moved when Adrian Vale said the words.
"Your husband's death was not an accident.""
The sentence hung in the chapel like smoke.
Slowly spreading.
Impossible to ignore.
I looked at him standing in the doorway.
A stranger.
A man whose name had somehow been buried inside every secret surrounding my family.
Emily.
Daniel Cross.
Renata.
My husband.
My son.
All roads seemed to lead back to him.
Marcus stepped in front of me.
A protective instinct.
A son's instinct.
"Stay away from my mother.""
Adrian looked at him calmly.
Not offended.
Not threatened.
Almost amused.
"You have your father's courage.""
That made Marcus stiffen.
"Don't talk about my father.""
Adrian tilted his head.
"Why? Because you think you knew him?""
The words struck harder than they should have.
Marcus didn't answer.
Because none of us knew him anymore.
Not completely.
Not after learning he had spent his final months chasing a truth he never shared.
Adrian walked slowly into the chapel.
The guests moved away from him without being asked.
There was something about him.
Something controlled.
People like Adrian didn't need to raise their voices.
They made other people lower theirs.
Daniel Cross watched him carefully.
"You shouldn't be here.""
Adrian glanced at him.
"Neither should you.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You killed her.""
A gasp moved through the chapel.
Marcus looked between them.
"Who?""
Adrian didn't react.
"Careful, Daniel.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"You think after eight years I forgot?""
"No.""
Adrian smiled slightly.
"I think you remembered exactly what you wanted to remember.""
I felt anger rise in me.
"Who are you?""
Adrian turned toward me.
For the first time, his expression changed.
A little.
Not kindness.
Something closer to respect.
"Your husband was a difficult man to deceive, Mrs. Bennett.""
My fingers tightened around my purse.
"You knew Daniel.""
"Yes.""
"How?""
Adrian looked around the chapel.
"Because he was investigating me.""
Marcus stared.
"My father investigated you?""
Adrian nodded.
"And he got closer than anyone ever had.""
"Then why is he dead?""
A pause.
A long one.
Then Adrian said:
"Because he found the wrong answer.""
Nobody understood.
Not at first.
"What does that mean?"" I asked.
Adrian looked at Renata.
"It means your husband discovered the truth about Emily Hale.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Don't listen to him.""
Adrian looked at him.
"Still protecting her?""
Daniel's face hardened.
"I'm protecting the truth.""
"No.""
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"You're protecting the version of the truth that lets you sleep at night.""
That struck something.
Daniel looked away.
Marcus noticed.
"Daniel?""
I saw it too.
A hesitation.
A crack.
"There's something you haven't told us.""
Daniel didn't answer.
Marcus's voice sharpened.
"There's something everyone hasn't told me.""
Nobody could argue with that.
Because he was right.
Everyone around him had been making decisions for him.
His mother.
His fiancée.
A stranger who appeared at his wedding.
Everyone claimed it was to protect him.
But protection without honesty was just another kind of control.
Marcus looked at me.
"Mom.""
I met his eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
"I know.""
His voice softened slightly.
"But I need the truth.""
I nodded.
"You deserve it.""
Adrian watched us quietly.
Then he placed a folder on a nearby chair.
"Inside are copies of the evidence your husband collected.""
I looked at the folder.
"Why give it to me?""
"Because Daniel Bennett trusted you.""
I shook my head.
"No, he didn't.""
Adrian frowned.
"What?""
"If he trusted me, he would have told me.""
A silence followed.
Then Adrian said something I wasn't prepared for.
"He was trying to.""
My breath caught.
"What?""
Adrian looked at me.
"The night before he died, he called me.""
Everyone went still.
"You spoke to my husband?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"The night before his funeral.""
The chapel seemed colder.
"Why?""
Adrian looked at the floor.
"Because he had discovered something about me.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"What?""
Adrian looked at him.
"He discovered I wasn't the person Emily thought I was.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"There it is.""
Marcus looked confused.
"What does that mean?""
Adrian didn't answer.
Instead, he opened the folder.
He pulled out a photograph.
Then handed it to Marcus.
My son looked down.
His expression changed.
"That's...""
He couldn't finish.
I stepped closer.
The photograph showed Emily.
Standing beside Adrian.
But they weren't strangers.
They looked close.
Comfortable.
Like family.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Why did you say Adrian killed her?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Adrian did.
"Because I was the last person Emily called.""
A silence.
Then Marcus whispered:
"You were?""
Adrian nodded.
"She called me forty-three minutes before the crash.""
Renata suddenly spoke.
"Because she was going to expose him.""
Adrian turned toward her.
"No.""
His voice became colder.
"Because she was going to expose you.""
Renata looked away.
Marcus stared.
"Renata.""
She whispered:
"I didn't know.""
"Didn't know what?""
She looked at him.
"I didn't know how far it would go.""
Those words frightened me.
Because they confirmed something.
She knew something.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Marcus stepped away from her.
"How far what would go?""
Renata's eyes filled.
"When Emily found out about my past, she wanted to tell everyone.""
"Your past?""
She looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Adrian.
And finally she said:
"The marriage.""
Marcus shook his head.
"We already know about that.""
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"You don't.""
Everyone went silent.
Renata wiped her tears.
"My marriage to Daniel Cross wasn't the secret.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Then what was?""
Renata looked at Adrian.
"The reason I left.""
Adrian's expression changed.
A small movement.
But enough.
Because whatever she was about to say mattered.
A lot.
"I didn't leave Daniel because I stopped loving him.""
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time, pain crossed his face.
"Then why?""
Renata swallowed.
"Because I found out what he was hiding.""
Daniel froze.
Marcus looked between them.
"What was he hiding?""
Renata didn't answer.
She looked at Adrian.
"He knows.""
Adrian remained silent.
Marcus turned toward him.
"What does he know?""
Adrian looked at me.
Then at my son.
Then he said:
"Your father wasn't investigating Emily's death.""
A pause.
"He was investigating the people who caused it.""
My heart stopped.
Because I suddenly understood.
Daniel hadn't been looking backward.
He had been looking forward.
Trying to prevent something worse.
Adrian continued.
"And the person who gave him the information was...""
He stopped.
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
It was Renata's.
She looked at the screen.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
Marcus noticed.
"Who is calling?""
She didn't answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Again.
Again.
Finally, she picked up.
Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.
But they could hear her response.
"No.""
A pause.
Then:
"You promised me.""
Her hand began shaking.
Marcus moved closer.
"Who is it?""
Renata looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
And then she whispered:
"The person who helped me disappear.""
The call continued.
Renata listened.
Then her face changed completely.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Something worse.
Shock.
She lowered the phone slowly.
"He's alive.""
Daniel went pale.
"Who?""
Renata looked directly at me.
And said a name I hadn't heard in fifteen years.
A name that made Marcus step back.
"My father.""
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
Because Marcus's grandfather had died before he was born.
May you like
At least...
That was what I had been told.
