Chapter 6: The Signature of a Dead Man
I looked at the document in my hands.
Then I looked at Marcus.
Then back at the page.
My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Daniel Bennett.
My husband.
Marcus's father.
A man who had been buried seven years ago.
A man whose name I had not seen on an official document since the day I signed his death certificate.
"This is impossible.""
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
Marcus watched me carefully.
"Mom.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
I held up the paper.
"This cannot be real.""
Daniel Cross stepped closer.
"I thought the same thing.""
The chapel steps were still crowded with people, but somehow it felt like we were alone.
Like the entire world had narrowed down to one piece of paper.
One signature.
One impossible question.
How does a dead man sign a document?
Renata looked at the page.
And for the first time all morning, she looked genuinely confused.
Not afraid.
Not calculating.
Confused.
"Daniel Bennett?""
She whispered the name.
I turned toward her.
"You know him?""
Her eyes quickly moved away.
Too quickly.
Marcus noticed.
"Renata.""
She swallowed.
"I've heard the name.""
I stared at her.
"No.""
My voice was quiet.
"You haven't just heard it.""
Her face tightened.
"You don't know what you're talking about.""
"Then tell me.""
I stepped closer.
"Tell me how you know my husband's name.""
She didn't answer.
And that was the answer.
Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.
I could almost feel the disappointment leaving him like a physical thing.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Another piece of his life he had built on something false.
"Mom.""
I looked at him.
"I'm sorry.""
He shook his head.
"I don't need you to apologize.""
His eyes moved to Renata.
"I need someone to stop lying.""
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Renata looked away.
Daniel Cross took the document back.
"There is more.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Of course there is.""
The bitterness in his voice broke my heart.
Daniel unfolded another page.
"This was found inside a safety deposit box.""
"Whose?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Your father's.""
My breath caught.
"My husband's?""
He nodded.
"The box was opened after his death by someone with authorization.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
Daniel looked at Renata.
Nobody moved.
Then Marcus spoke.
"Renata.""
She looked at him.
"No.""
"Yes.""
"No, Marcus.""
"Why are you always the person standing at the end of every question?""
Her face crumbled slightly.
"I didn't open anything.""
Daniel interrupted.
"She didn't.""
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
"Not directly.""
That made things worse.
Marcus stared.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel looked at me.
"It means someone used her.""
I felt a chill.
"Used her for what?""
Daniel handed me the second page.
"Your husband was investigating Emily Hale's death before he died.""
My fingers tightened around the paper.
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Daniel wasn't a detective.""
"No.""
Daniel nodded.
"But he was a lawyer.""
I knew that.
Everyone knew that.
My husband had spent twenty-five years as a corporate attorney.
He had always been the person people called when things became complicated.
The person who searched for answers.
The person who noticed details.
I remembered the last year of his life.
The late nights.
The phone calls he refused to explain.
The locked drawer in his office.
At the time, I thought it was work.
I thought it was stress.
I thought I knew my husband.
Apparently, I didn't.
"What was he investigating?""
Daniel looked at Renata.
"The truth about Emily.""
Marcus turned toward her.
"Why?""
Renata whispered:
"Because he knew.""
"Knew what?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel did.
"He knew Emily was murdered.""
The words landed heavily.
A few guests quietly stepped away.
Someone whispered that they should leave.
Nobody stopped them.
Marcus looked at me.
"Mom, did Dad ever talk about Emily?""
I searched my memory.
"No.""
Then I stopped.
Because that wasn't completely true.
There was one night.
One conversation.
Three weeks before his death.
I had woken up at two in the morning and found him sitting alone in his office.
The light was on.
The drawer was open.
And he looked terrified.
Not worried.
Not stressed.
Terrified.
I had asked him what was wrong.
He had smiled and said:
"Nothing you need to carry.""
At the time, I was angry.
Now I understood.
He had been trying to protect me.
I looked at Marcus.
"Your father knew something was wrong.""
His face softened.
"What did he tell you?""
I looked down.
"He told me he loved me.""
The words came out quietly.
"And he told me if anything ever happened to him, I should trust my instincts.""
Marcus stared.
"Anything happened?""
I nodded.
"I thought he was being dramatic.""
Daniel Cross looked at me.
"He wasn't.""
A cold silence followed.
Because suddenly, my husband's death didn't feel as simple as I had believed.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Are you saying my father was killed?""
Nobody answered.
But nobody denied it either.
Renata finally spoke.
"Stop.""
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice was shaking.
"You don't understand what you're doing.""
Marcus stared.
"Explain it.""
She looked around.
"The people involved in this are dangerous.""
Daniel laughed softly.
"Now you're worried about danger?""
She looked at him.
"You don't know who you're dealing with.""
"And you do?""
That shut her up.
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, I wondered if Renata wasn't just hiding a crime.
Maybe she was hiding from someone.
Someone worse.
Marcus noticed too.
"Who?""
Renata looked at him.
"What?""
"Who are you afraid of?""
She said nothing.
"Renata.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I can't tell you.""
"Why?""
"Because if I do...""
She stopped.
Marcus waited.
"Because if I do, they will come after you.""
The words changed everything.
Not a threat.
A warning.
I looked at Daniel Cross.
He looked worried.
Not surprised.
Worried.
"Who are they?"" I asked.
Renata looked at me.
And for a moment, there was something almost human in her expression.
Fear.
Regret.
Maybe even guilt.
"The people who helped me disappear.""
Marcus went still.
"Disappear?""
She nodded.
"My past.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"You mean the people who helped you fake a new life.""
Renata closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
The chapel doors creaked behind us.
Everyone turned.
A man stood inside the entrance.
Nobody had seen him arrive.
He wore a dark suit.
No expression.
No emotion.
Just a folder in his hand.
Renata's face lost all color.
Marcus looked at him.
"Who are you?""
The man didn't answer.
His eyes went directly to me.
Then he spoke.
"Mrs. Bennett.""
My stomach tightened.
"How do you know my name?""
He opened the folder.
"Because your husband spent his final months trying to protect you from me.""
The entire chapel went silent.
Marcus stepped in front of me instinctively.
A small gesture.
A familiar one.
The little boy who once stood in front of me during a schoolyard fight was still there.
The man looked at him.
"You're Marcus.""
My son didn't move.
"Who are you?""
The man smiled faintly.
"My name is Adrian Vale.""
Daniel Cross went pale.
And when he whispered the name that followed...
I understood why.
"He's the man Emily was trying to expose.""
Adrian looked around the chapel.
At Renata.
At Daniel.
At me.
May you like
Then he said:
"And I think it's time everyone stopped pretending your husband's death was an accident.""
