Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Curtain

The first thing I heard was footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

The kind of footsteps belonging to someone who wasn’t afraid.

Someone who believed they owned the room.

Michael immediately moved in front of me.

Even injured and exhausted, his first instinct was still to protect.

“Stay behind me,” he whispered.

I grabbed his arm.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The emergency lights flickered on.

And standing in the doorway was a man wearing an expensive gray suit.

I recognized him.

Not personally.

But from Michael’s stories.

“Andrew.””

Michael’s voice was cold.

The man smiled.

“Still dramatic, Michael.””

Andrew Keller.

Michael’s former mentor.

The man who helped him become one of the most feared trial attorneys in the city.

The man whose name appeared on every important case Michael had ever won.

I stared at him.

“What are you doing here?””

Andrew ignored me.

He looked at Michael.

“You always had one weakness.””

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

“My wife?””

Andrew smiled.

“Your belief that everyone has a line they won’t cross.””

The words chilled me.

Detective Harper stepped forward.

“Mr. Keller, you need to explain why you’re inside a secured hospital area.””

Andrew looked at her.

Then smiled.

“Do I?””

The confidence irritated me.

It reminded me of my father.

People who thought consequences were for everyone else.

Detective Harper reached for her radio.

Andrew lifted his hands.

“Relax.””

Nobody relaxed.

Michael stared at him.

“You helped Daniel.””

Andrew sighed.

“I helped your family.””

My stomach dropped.

“My family?””

Andrew looked at me.

“You have no idea how much damage your father caused.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Andrew laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

He looked around the room.

“Your father was going to lose everything. Daniel was going to expose him. Erica was desperate. I simply created a solution.””

I felt disgusted.

“A solution?””

Andrew nodded.

“Everyone gets what they want.””

Michael’s voice became dangerous.

“You tried to frame me.””

Andrew shrugged.

“You were the only obstacle.””

The words were so casual.

Like he was discussing a business decision.

Not destroying a person.

Detective Harper moved closer.

“You’re admitting involvement?””

Andrew smiled.

“No.””

A pause.

“I’m explaining reality.””

Michael looked at him.

“Where is Daniel?””

Andrew’s smile disappeared.

For the first time.

“He became impatient.””

“What does that mean?””

Andrew didn’t answer.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And suddenly his expression changed.

Not fear.

Concern.

Michael noticed.

“Something went wrong.””

Andrew looked at him.

“You have no idea.””

Before anyone could react, Andrew turned toward the hallway.

The officers blocked him.

“Don’t move.””

Andrew stopped.

Then laughed.

“You think this is over?””

Michael stared.

“You lost.””

Andrew looked at me.

“No.””

Then he said something that made my blood freeze.

“You still haven’t asked why Daniel targeted Sarah specifically.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Michael.

“What does he mean?””

Michael’s expression changed.

“Andrew.””

But Andrew continued.

“Ask your husband.””

My heart started racing.

“What is he talking about?””

Michael didn’t answer.

That terrified me.

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

“I was going to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Andrew smiled.

“There it is.””

He looked satisfied.

“The truth always comes out eventually.””

Detective Harper stepped between us.

“Mr. Keller, enough.””

But I couldn’t look away from Michael.

“Tell me.””

Michael swallowed.

Then he sat down beside my bed.

“Sarah…”

I felt tears forming.

“What?””

He took a breath.

“Daniel wasn’t targeting you because of the insurance.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why?””

Michael looked devastated.

“Because of your father’s company.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Michael opened his laptop again.

He pulled up an old document.

“Two years ago, before I met you…”

I stared.

“What?””

“I worked on a case involving your father’s company.””

The room became silent.

“What kind of case?””

Michael looked at the screen.

“A corporate fraud investigation.””

My father looked up.

“Wait.””

Michael ignored him.

“The evidence I found showed someone had been moving money through illegal accounts.””

I whispered:

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know it was your father.””

The pain in his voice was real.

“I didn’t know until after we got married.””

I felt like the ground disappeared.

“You found out?””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I loved you.””

I looked away.

There was so much happening.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

Then Michael said the one thing I never expected.

“Sarah, your father wasn’t the original person responsible.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Michael looked at my father.

“He was covering for someone else.””

My father’s face turned white.

“No.””

Michael opened another file.

“The person who started the fraud…”

He looked at Andrew.

“Was Andrew Keller.””

The room exploded.

Andrew’s calm expression finally disappeared.

Detective Harper immediately moved.

“Mr. Keller, you’re under arrest.””

But Andrew smiled.

Not because he was confident.

Because he knew something.

Something none of us knew.

As officers grabbed him, he looked at me and said:

“Ask your husband who really signed the documents.””

May you like

Then he leaned closer.

“And ask him why your name was already on them before you ever met him.””
