Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Behind Erica’s Smile
The room changed the moment Detective Harper ended the call.
Everyone felt it.
My father’s confidence disappeared.
My mother stopped pretending to be calm.
Even the officers looked uncertain.
I watched their faces carefully.
For years, I had wondered if I was imagining things.
The favoritism.
The excuses.
The way my parents always protected Erica.
But seeing them now, standing beside my hospital bed while my husband was being accused of hurting me, I finally understood.
This was never about love.
It was about control.
“Detective?”” my father said.
His voice was sharper now.
“What was that call about?””
Detective Harper didn’t answer him.
She looked at me.
“Mrs. Vance, before I continue, I need to ask you something.””
I nodded.
“What?””
“Did your sister know you and your husband were announcing the pregnancy tonight?””
I frowned.
“Yes.””
“How?””
I looked confused.
“My mother told her.””
The detective glanced at my mother.
My mother looked away.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why does that matter?””
Detective Harper placed her phone on the table.
“Because we just received a copy of exterior security footage from your parents’ neighborhood.””
My father immediately interrupted.
“That footage is private.””
The detective looked at him.
“Not when it becomes evidence in an assault investigation.””
He went quiet.
She continued.
“The footage shows Erica arriving three hours before dinner.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“That’s impossible.””
Erica always arrived late.
Always.
It was one of her habits.
My mother defended her.
“She was helping with preparations.””
Detective Harper shook her head.
“She wasn’t inside the house.””
Nobody spoke.
“She was sitting in her car.””
Michael looked at me.
I could see he was already thinking like a lawyer.
“What was she doing?””
The detective unlocked her phone.
“She was on the phone with someone.””
My father stepped forward.
“Who?””
The detective looked at him.
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
Then she turned to me.
“Mrs. Vance, did Erica seem surprised when you announced your pregnancy?””
I remembered her face.
The anger.
The shock.
“No.””
I swallowed.
“She looked like she already knew.””
Michael’s eyes narrowed.
“Sarah.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then he asked:
“Did your sister ever mention wanting a baby?””
The question confused me.
“No.””
But then a memory appeared.
A conversation from months earlier.
Erica sitting in my kitchen.
Holding a glass of wine.
Looking at my wedding photos.
“You always get everything so easily,” she had said.
I had laughed.
“What are you talking about?””
She smiled.
But her eyes were cold.
“Nothing.””
At the time, I ignored it.
Now I couldn’t.
Detective Harper watched me carefully.
“You remembered something.””
I nodded slowly.
“She said something strange months ago.””
My father immediately spoke.
“Sarah, don’t exaggerate.””
I looked at him.
For the first time in my life, I wasn’t afraid of disappointing him.
“She said I always get everything easily.””
My father’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Michael saw it too.
“Interesting,” he said.
My father glared.
“You’re trying to destroy my family.””
Michael laughed quietly.
“No.””
He looked around the room.
“Your family did that before I arrived.””
The officers moved closer.
My mother finally spoke.
“Sarah, please.””
Her voice broke.
A voice I had heard a thousand times.
The voice she used when she wanted forgiveness without accepting responsibility.
“We were scared.””
I stared at her.
“You blocked the door.””
She looked down.
“I panicked.””
“You took Michael’s phone.””
“I didn’t want Erica arrested.””
The words hung in the air.
Nobody moved.
My mother realized what she had just admitted.
Detective Harper slowly looked up.
“You didn’t want Erica arrested?””
My mother’s face went pale.
“I mean—I didn’t know what I was doing.””
But it was too late.
The truth had already escaped.
Michael stepped forward.
“Detective, I would like to submit the body-camera footage and request an immediate investigation into witness tampering and obstruction.””
My father laughed nervously.
“You think you can threaten us?””
Michael turned toward him.
“No.””
He reached into his jacket and removed another item.
A small folder.
“I think you should know what I found before dinner.””
My heart started racing.
“What is that?””
Michael looked at me.
“I wasn’t investigating your family, Sarah.””
“Then what?””
His expression softened.
“I was investigating something Erica did months ago.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she do?””
Nobody answered.
Michael opened the folder.
Inside was a printed document.
A name.
A date.
A signature.
And a photograph.
My father saw it first.
The color drained from his face.
“Where did you get that?””
Michael looked at him.
“From the company records.””
My hands trembled.
“What does it say?””
Michael slowly turned the paper toward me.
And the name written across the top made my entire body go cold.
Because it wasn’t Erica’s name.
It was mine.

And underneath my name was a sentence that explained why my sister had attacked me:
“Unauthorized beneficiary change request approved…”
