Chapter 9: The Truth Rebecca Left Behind

“It was Rebecca’s handwriting.””

The words made the entire room feel colder.

I stared at the note in my hand.

My sister’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that filled birthday cards.

The same handwriting that wrote grocery lists on our refrigerator.

The same handwriting that wrote the letter telling me to be careful.

But now it was on a threat.

A warning.

A message left by someone who wanted me afraid.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

Marcus looked at the note like it was something dangerous.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Rebecca would never threaten me.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you saying it’s her handwriting?””

He didn’t answer.

And I hated that.

I hated that every truth came with another question.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

I handed her the note.

She studied it carefully.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She looked at me.

Then Marcus.

“This is not Rebecca’s handwriting.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked confused.

“But I thought—”

“You thought wrong.””

Evelyn placed the note on the desk.

“Rebecca’s handwriting was copied.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus slowly turned toward Vivian.

The room went silent.

Vivian laughed.

But there was no confidence left.

“You think I did this?””

Marcus didn’t respond.

“You think I copied Rebecca’s handwriting?””

“You had access to her files.””

Vivian’s expression hardened.

“So did you.””

The words landed.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

Again.

Always another secret.

I was tired of being the only person in the room who didn’t know the full story.

“Enough.””

My voice cut through the room.

Both of them looked at me.

“I don’t care who has the better excuse.””

I picked up the fake note.

“My sister died.””

Silence.

“And for six years, everyone has been protecting themselves.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You protected your company.””

Then Vivian.

“You protected your reputation.””

Then Evelyn.

“You protected your son.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody protected Rebecca.””

Evelyn looked down.

Because she knew.

I took a breath.

“Tell me everything.””

Marcus stared at me.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“This ends now.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Marcus sat down.

And for the first time since I met him, he looked like a man who had run out of places to hide.

“After Rebecca’s accident,” he said quietly, “I went back.””

I frowned.

“Back where?””

“To the scene.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I knew something was wrong.””

He looked at the floor.

“The police believed she lost control.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Rebecca was too careful.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

That was exactly what I always believed.

Rebecca was careful.

She planned everything.

She checked every detail.

“She wouldn’t have driven like that,” Marcus continued.

“Then what happened?””

He looked at me.

“I found her car.””

My breathing slowed.

“And?””

“She was alive.””

The words hit me harder than anything else.

Alive.

For a second, I couldn’t process them.

“What?””

Marcus’s voice broke.

“She was alive when I got there.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You said she died in the accident.””

“I lied.””

The confession filled the room.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“Why?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Because of what happened next.””

“What happened?””

He swallowed.

“Someone else arrived.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

He looked at Vivian.

She went completely still.

“Vivian.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“Marcus, don’t.””

I looked at her.

“You were there.””

She said nothing.

“You were there.””

Her face changed.

And that was all the confirmation I needed.

My knees felt weak.

The woman who stole my husband.

The woman who slapped me.

The woman who had stood beside him tonight.

She had been there when my sister died.

“What did you do?””

Vivian’s expression became cold.

“I didn’t kill her.””

Nobody moved.

“I didn’t say you did.””

But her reaction said everything.

Marcus continued.

“Rebecca knew she was in danger.””

“Because of Vivian?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you call the police?””

His eyes filled with shame.

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“Afraid of what?””

“She had evidence against me too.””

My heart sank.

“What evidence?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The truth about how I met you.””

I already knew.

But I wanted him to say it.

“I lied to you.””

His voice cracked.

“I approached you because of your father.””

I looked away.

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t know the worst part.””

I looked back.

“What?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Rebecca found out I had access to your family records before we started dating.””

My face went numb.

“You investigated me.””

“Yes.””

“Not my father.””

“Yes.””

“Me.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The pain was sharp.

But strangely, I wasn’t surprised.

Because my heart had already started grieving the man I thought he was.

“What did Rebecca do?””

“She confronted me.””

“When?””

“The day before she died.””

I frowned.

“She told me if I didn’t tell you the truth, she would.””

“And you?””

“I begged her not to.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew if you found out, I would lose you.””

I laughed quietly.

“You lost me anyway.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“Rebecca forgave me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She understood why I was angry.””

My expression hardened.

“She understood?””

“Yes.””

“She understood you lied to me?””

“She understood I was manipulated.””

I looked at Vivian.

“And she didn’t?””

Marcus was silent.

That silence answered.

“Rebecca knew.””

“Yes.””

“She knew Vivian was controlling you.””

“Yes.””

“And she still tried to help you.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Because that was Rebecca.

She saw the good in people even when they didn’t deserve it.

“What happened after the accident?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Vivian took the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“The original documents.””

“The ones proving what she did?””

“Yes.””

“And Rebecca?””

His voice became barely audible.

“She didn’t survive.””

The room went silent.

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

My sister.

My beautiful, stubborn, protective sister.

Gone.

Because she tried to uncover the truth.

“Why did you let everyone believe it was an accident?””

Marcus looked destroyed.

“Because Vivian threatened you.””

My head snapped up.

“What?””

“She said she would come after you.””

“She threatened my life?””

“No.””

He swallowed.

“She threatened your future.””

I didn’t understand.

Then he said:

“She knew about your father’s debt. She knew about your inheritance. She knew about the company agreement.””

The divorce papers.

The forged signatures.

Everything connected.

“She planned this years ago.””

Marcus nodded.

“Vivian wanted control.””

I looked at her.

For the first time, she looked small.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just caught.

“You ruined my life.””

Vivian’s face hardened.

“No.””

Her voice was calm again.

“You ruined your own life by trusting people.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She smiled faintly.

“Rebecca trusted Marcus.””

Her eyes moved to him.

“Look where that got her.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

But Vivian continued.

“And you trusted Marcus.””

She looked at me.

“Look where that got you.””

For a second, I felt the old pain.

The betrayal.

The heartbreak.

Then something else appeared.

Clarity.

Because Vivian was right about one thing.

I had trusted Marcus.

But trust wasn’t weakness.

Her mistake was thinking betrayal meant I was powerless.

I picked up my phone.

Marcus looked at me.

“What are you doing?””

I pressed a button.

“Calling someone.””

“Who?””

I looked at Vivian.

“The person who can prove everything.””

Marcus frowned.

“Emily, who?””

I looked down at the contact.

A name I had not called in six years.

A name Rebecca left behind.

“The only person Rebecca trusted after you.””

The call connected.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Then a man answered.

His voice was older.

Tired.

But familiar.

“Emily?””

My breath caught.

“Daniel.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Because he knew that name.

Everyone in the company knew that name.

Rebecca’s closest friend.

The man who disappeared after her funeral.

“I found Rebecca’s evidence,” I said.

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to find it yet.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

His voice became urgent.

“Emily, listen to me carefully.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Why?””

“Because if you have the evidence…”

A pause.

A terrifying pause.

“…then Vivian knows where you are.””

I looked up.

Vivian was no longer in the room.

The office door was open.

My blood ran cold.

“Where did she go?””

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

Then his face changed.

“Emily.””

I turned.

He was staring at the elevator display.

The numbers were moving downward.

Someone had just left.

And in the elevator security camera reflection…

I saw Vivian holding something.

The black box.

Rebecca’s letter.

May you like

And a small object beside it.

A gun.
