Chapter 1: The Woman He Chose
“The slap echoed across the marble entrance of the Oakmont Luxury Hotel, and everyone heard the sound of my marriage breaking before I did.””
For one second, the entire lobby froze.
The crystal chandeliers above me continued to glow. The pianist near the lounge continued playing a soft melody that suddenly felt cruel. The wealthy guests walking through the entrance turned their heads, their conversations fading into whispers.
But I heard only my own heartbeat.
My cheek burned where Vivian Cross’s hand had struck me.
My seven-month-pregnant stomach tightened painfully, and instinctively, I placed one hand over my baby as I grabbed the brass railing beside me to keep from falling.
I looked at Marcus.
My husband.
The man who had held my hair back during morning sickness. The man who had driven through a snowstorm because I wanted a specific dessert from a bakery two hours away. The man who cried when we finally heard our baby’s heartbeat after years of disappointment.
I waited for him to move.
I waited for him to protect me.
Instead, he stepped in front of Vivian.
Not me.
Her.
“Marcus…” My voice came out smaller than I expected.
“Did you just see what she did?””
His jaw tightened.
For a moment, I convinced myself he was angry.
I convinced myself he was about to turn around and tell Vivian she had crossed a line.
I convinced myself my husband was still the man I knew.
Then he looked at his watch.
“Emily, just go home.””
The words hit harder than the slap.
I stared at him.
“What?””
“You’re making this worse,” he said quietly.
“Get an Uber and leave before this turns into something embarrassing.””
Embarrassing.
That was the word he chose.
Not “Are you okay?””
Not “She shouldn’t have touched you.””
Not “I’m sorry.””
Just embarrassing.
I looked around the lobby, at the strangers watching me, and suddenly I felt like I was the only person who didn’t know the truth.
“Marcus,” I whispered, “why is she here?””
Vivian adjusted the strap of her designer purse, completely calm. She looked like she was attending a business meeting, not standing beside a pregnant woman she had just assaulted.
“She’s still pretending she doesn’t know?”” Vivian asked.
Marcus glanced at her.
“Vivian.””
“What?”” she replied with a small laugh.
“You told me tonight was finally the night.””
My stomach twisted.
“What is she talking about?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That silence was worse than anything he could have said.
I had spent months feeling something was wrong.
The late nights.
The secret phone calls.
The sudden business trips.
The way he turned his screen away whenever I walked into the room.
Every time I asked him, he gave me the same answer.
“Work is stressful, Emily.””
And I believed him.
Because I had always believed him.
I believed him when his company nearly collapsed three years ago and he came home one night with tears in his eyes, convinced he had failed.
I was the one who sat beside him on the kitchen floor until sunrise.
I was the one who told him we would figure it out.
I believed him when doctors told us having a child might not happen easily.
I sat through appointments.
I held his hand after every disappointment.
I cried with him when another month passed without good news.
Then, after years of trying, we finally heard that tiny heartbeat.
Marcus had pressed his forehead against mine in that hospital room.
“We’re going to be parents,” he whispered.
He cried.
I cried.
We promised each other that nothing would ever break us.
Now he stood beside another woman while I carried the child we fought so hard to have.
“Tell me she’s lying,” I said.
Marcus looked away.
My chest tightened.
“Tell me.””
Vivian stepped closer.
“You really should stop begging for answers from a man who already made his choice.””
“Stay out of this,” I said.
She smiled.
That smile made me understand something.
She wasn’t nervous.
She wasn’t afraid.
She knew exactly how this would end.
“Marcus brought me here because he’s tired of hiding me,” Vivian said.
“His family deserves to meet the woman he’s actually going to marry.””
The world seemed to tilt.
I looked at Marcus.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
“Marcus?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Emily…”
“No.”” My voice shook.
“Say she’s lying.””
He didn’t.
A man can confess without speaking.
Sometimes all he has to do is stand silently beside the person who destroyed you.
My hand moved protectively over my stomach.
“Our baby is right here,” I said.
“You’re standing here with another woman, and you can’t even deny it?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Don’t make a public scene.””
I almost laughed.
A strange, broken laugh.
“A public scene?””
People were watching us.
They had seen the slap.
They had seen him choose her.
But somehow I was the problem.
“You invited me here,” I said.
“You told me your mother wanted me at a family trust meeting.””
His expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“What trust meeting?”” I asked.
Marcus didn’t respond.
My heart began pounding.
“What trust meeting, Marcus?””
Vivian crossed her arms.
“Oh, he didn’t tell you?””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“Vivian, enough.””
“No, I think she deserves to know.””
The lobby suddenly felt colder.
Vivian stepped closer, lowering her voice just enough to make it feel like a secret.
“Your husband has been planning his future for months.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Is that true?””
He remained silent.
“Marcus.””
Still nothing.
The man who used to say my name like it was the most important word in the world couldn’t even look at me.
A memory flashed through my mind.
Our wedding day.
His hand around mine.
His promise.
“Emily, I choose you. Every day.””
I wondered how many times he had said that while already choosing someone else.
Vivian reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
“I think you should see something.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
That one word made my blood run cold.
Not because of anger.
Because of fear.
I had never heard fear in Marcus’s voice before.
Vivian looked at him, then turned the phone toward me.
On the screen was a photograph.
Marcus.
Vivian.
A diamond ring.
My fingers went numb.
“When was this taken?”” I whispered.
Neither of them answered.
I looked closer.
The background was familiar.
Too familiar.
It was the private dining room at the Oakmont Luxury Hotel.
The same hotel where Marcus told me he was bringing me tonight.
The same place where he had apparently planned to introduce her.
My eyes filled with tears, but I refused to let them fall.
Not there.
Not in front of them.
“Are you engaged?”” I asked.
Marcus finally looked at me.
And the expression on his face told me everything.
“I was going to explain.””
My laugh was quiet.
“You were going to explain after introducing me to your replacement?””
“Emily—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
Pain shot through my body, and I gripped the railing again.
For the first time, Marcus looked worried.
“Are you okay?””
The question almost broke me.
Because it was the first time all night he had acted like he cared.
But I saw through it.
“You’re not worried about me,” I said.
“You’re worried about what happens if something happens to your child in front of everyone.””
His face changed.
A small crack appeared.
Then Vivian spoke.
“Marcus, your mother is waiting upstairs.””
I froze.
His mother.
The woman who had called me “the daughter she never had.””
The woman who sent me baby clothes before I even knew the baby’s gender.
The woman who always told me family was everything.
She was upstairs.
Waiting.
For Vivian.
I stared at Marcus.
“Your mother knows?””
He looked away.
That was my answer.
The elevator doors behind them opened with a soft chime.
A woman stepped out holding a folder.
She was elegant, silver-haired, and familiar.
Marcus’s mother.
Evelyn Cross.
Her eyes landed on me first.
Then my swollen stomach.
Then Vivian standing beside her son.
Her expression changed.
But not with surprise.
With guilt.
And that was when I realized something far worse than my husband’s betrayal.
They had all known.
They had all been waiting for me to find out.
Evelyn slowly walked toward us, clutching the folder tighter.
“Emily,” she whispered.
I looked at the folder in her hands.
A legal document.
My name was written across the front.
And beneath it was a title that made my entire body go cold.
“Divorce Agreement.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Tell me why your mother is holding divorce papers with my name on them.””
He opened his mouth.
May you like
But before he could answer, Evelyn said something that made Vivian’s smile disappear.
“Because Marcus never planned to give you a choice.””
