Thinking

Chapter 8: The Father in the Shadows

I stared at Vanessa.

For a moment, I wondered if exhaustion had finally caught up with me.

Maybe I had misunderstood.

Maybe after a day filled with lies, secrets, and impossible revelations, my mind was searching for another disaster that wasn’t there.

But Vanessa’s face told me everything.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t shocked.

She was afraid.

“Say that again.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Lily’s biological father has been watching her.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“Watching her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“How long?””

She looked away.

“Since she was born.””

I felt my hands go cold.

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

Another secret.

Another piece of my daughter’s life that had been hidden from me.

I stepped back.

“Who is he?””

Vanessa sat down.

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“I need you to answer.””

She looked at me.

“His name is Michael.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way she said it did.

Like it carried years of fear.

“Who is Michael?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Rachel’s boyfriend before Lily was born.””

I frowned.

“Rachel told me Lily’s father was gone.””

“He was.””

“Then how is he alive?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because he didn’t disappear.””

The silence was heavy.

“What happened?””

She rubbed her hands together.

“Michael wasn’t a good person.””

My expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“He was controlling.””

She swallowed.

“He didn’t want Rachel raising Lily alone. He wanted custody, but not because he wanted to be a father.””

“Then why?””

“Because Lily was his.””

The words sounded possessive.

Not loving.

I understood why Vanessa had been afraid.

But fear still didn’t excuse everything.

“Did Michael hurt Rachel?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

“He threatened her.””

The room went quiet.

“He told her if she left him, he would take Lily away.””

I thought about Rachel.

The young woman she described herself as.

Alone.

Scared.

Struggling.

“And you knew this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because I was trying to protect Lily.””

There it was again.

The same sentence.

The same justification.

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it was true.””

“Maybe part of it was.””

I looked at her.

“But you used that fear to justify every choice you made.””

She looked down.

I continued.

“You lied about Rachel.””

Silence.

“You hid the custody situation.””

Silence.

“You treated Lily like she was less than Ava and Madison.””

Her face tightened.

“I never meant to.””

“But you did.””

That hurt her.

I could see it.

But I couldn’t pretend anymore.

Not when Lily was upstairs.

Not when my daughter had spent years believing she was difficult to love.

“Where is Michael now?””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“I don’t know.””

“You just said he’s been watching Lily.””

“He sent messages.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

“Recently.””

My stomach tightened.

“Recently?””

“Yes.””

“From him?””

She nodded.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa stood and walked to a drawer.

She pulled out an old phone.

“I kept these.””

I looked at her.

“You kept messages from Lily’s father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was scared.””

She handed me the phone.

I unlocked it.

The first message was from three months ago.

*I know she’s older now. She deserves to know who I am.*

The second:

*You can’t keep pretending I don’t exist.*

The third:

*If you don’t let me see my daughter, I’ll make sure Ethan learns everything.*

I looked up.

“He was threatening you.””

“Yes.””

“And you still didn’t tell me?””

She closed her eyes.

“I thought I could handle it.””

I laughed quietly.

“Vanessa.””

My voice was tired.

“You have spent seven years deciding what everyone else was allowed to know.””

She didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

I handed the phone back.

“Where is Rachel?””

“At the hotel.””

“Call her.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“Why?””

“Because if Michael is involved, she needs to know.””

I walked downstairs.

Lily was awake.

She was sitting on the couch with a blanket around her shoulders.

The second she saw me, she smiled.

“Daddy.””

I sat beside her.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She looked at my face.

“Is Mommy in trouble?””

I hated that she asked.

Not “Is Mommy okay?””

Not “Are we okay?””

Is Mommy in trouble?

Because Lily already understood consequences.

She understood blame.

I touched her hair.

“Adults are figuring things out.””

“Because of me?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“Never because of you.””

She looked at me.

“Then why does everyone keep talking about me?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because she was the center of everything.

But she shouldn’t have been carrying the burden of everything.

I said:

“Because sometimes adults make mistakes when they’re scared.””

She thought about that.

Then asked:

“Did Mommy make mistakes?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Are you mad at her?””

I looked upstairs.

At the woman who had betrayed me.

At the woman who had also raised my daughter.

“Yes.””

Lily’s face fell.

“But…”

I quickly added:

“Being mad doesn’t mean I don’t care.””

She nodded slowly.

That seemed to make sense to her.

Because children understand complicated love better than adults admit.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Ethan.””

Her voice sounded worried.

“What happened?””

I looked at Lily.

Then walked into the kitchen.

“Vanessa told me about Michael.””

Silence.

Then Rachel whispered:

“She finally told you.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Rachel.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

“Please don’t say sorry.””

The word had lost meaning.

“I need facts.””

She was quiet.

“Michael has been trying to contact Lily.””

“How long?””

“Years.””

The answer shocked me.

“Years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone was afraid.

Everyone except the child.

“She is my daughter too, Rachel.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because Michael isn’t like Vanessa.””

The way she said it made me stop.

“What does that mean?””

“He doesn’t want forgiveness.””

“What does he want?””

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“He wants control.””

I looked toward the living room.

At Lily.

“What do we do?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then:

“You need to know something about Michael.””

“What?””

“When Lily was born…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“He wasn’t just absent.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What are you saying?””

“He left because he was forced to.””

“By who?””

Rachel went silent.

And that silence scared me.

“Rachel.””

Finally, she whispered:

“Vanessa.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

“Vanessa told Michael she would ruin him if he came near Lily.””

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

“I didn’t believe it at first either.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought Vanessa was the person saving us.””

Rachel’s voice broke.

“But she wasn’t.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

Another secret.

Another version of the truth.

I looked upstairs.

At the bedroom where Vanessa sat.

The woman who had spent years claiming she was protecting Lily.

“Rachel, why would Vanessa do that?””

Her answer was barely a whisper.

“Because she wanted Lily.””

I felt a chill.

“Why?””

“Because she couldn’t have a child of her own.””

I froze.

Vanessa’s infertility.

Something she had once told me was a painful subject.

Something I had comforted her through.

Rachel continued:

“She didn’t just want to help Lily.””

“She wanted to replace everyone.””

I looked toward the stairs.

My heart sank.

Because suddenly, I understood the real tragedy.

Vanessa had not just taken Lily from her mother.

She had tried to erase every person connected to her.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One photo.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Lily.

Taken that morning.

At the mall.

From outside the shoe store.

May you like

Below the picture was one sentence.

*“You finally found out the truth. Now ask Vanessa what she promised me in exchange for Lily.””*
