Chapter 7: The Signature That Was Never Mine

The lawyer’s words echoed in my head.

*“Vanessa secretly converted using documents you never signed.””*

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

For seven years, I believed I had built my family on love, trust, and commitment.

Now I was learning that the foundation underneath it all was paperwork I had never seen.

A signature I had never written.

A decision I had never made.

“Mr. Carter?””

I realized Daniel Price was still on the phone.

“Yes.””

My voice sounded distant.

“Tell me everything.””

There was a pause.

“I need to be careful with what I say over the phone.””

“I don’t care.””

I looked at Lily.

At my daughter.

“My child’s life was changed without my knowledge.””

Another pause.

Then he sighed.

“Seven years ago, I was contacted by Vanessa.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course she was.

“She told me she needed assistance securing permanent guardianship.””

“Why?””

“She said Lily’s biological mother was unstable.””

My jaw tightened.

“Was she?””

The lawyer hesitated.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“No?””

“Mr. Carter, I can’t discuss privileged details from another client’s case, but I can tell you this: the information I was given at the beginning was incomplete.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning I was told one version of events.””

“And later?””

“Later, I discovered there were inconsistencies.””

“What kind of inconsistencies?””

Silence.

Then:

“Documents.””

My stomach dropped.

“What documents?””

“The ones showing your approval.””

I looked down at the paper in my hand.

The fake signature.

“The documents I never signed?””

“Yes.””

“Who signed them?””

The lawyer didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I stepped away from everyone.

“Mr. Price.””

“Yes?””

“If you know something, tell me.””

Another pause.

Then he said quietly:

“I should have questioned it sooner.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the signature looked suspicious.””

I stopped breathing for a second.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I was told you had reviewed everything.””

“I never reviewed anything.””

The silence became heavier.

Finally, he said:

“Mr. Carter, there is one more thing.””

“What?””

“Someone recently requested access to the original file.””

“Who?””

A pause.

“Vanessa.””

My fingers went cold.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

But I did.

She knew the truth was coming.

She knew the walls were closing in.

I ended the call.

When I turned around, everyone was watching me.

Rachel.

Lily.

Ava.

Madison.

They all knew something had changed.

Lily walked toward me slowly.

“Daddy?””

I immediately softened.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

“Are you okay?””

The question almost broke me.

Because she was asking about me.

After everything.

After being the one hurt.

She was still worried about me.

I knelt down.

“I’m okay.””

She studied my face.

“You’re lying.””

I froze.

A seven-year-old child had become better at reading people than the adults around her.

I smiled sadly.

“Maybe a little.””

She reached for my hand.

“Are you mad at me?””

“No.””

“Are you going to leave?””

The world stopped.

That was the fear she carried.

Not shoes.

Not secrets.

Not even her mother.

Being left.

I pulled her into my arms.

“I am never leaving you.””

She held onto me.

And for a moment, everything else disappeared.

But then I heard footsteps.

Vanessa.

She was standing at the entrance.

Her face was red from crying.

“Ethan.””

I stood.

Lily stayed close beside me.

Vanessa looked at her.

Then at me.

“You talked to him.””

“Yes.””

Her shoulders dropped.

“I knew you would find out eventually.””

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“I knew there were questions.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You knew there was a fake signature.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You knew.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t mean for it to go that far.””

I felt something inside me break.

“Go that far?””

She looked at me.

“I was trying to keep Lily safe.””

“You forged my name.””

“I was desperate.””

“You stole my ability to choose.””

Her tears fell.

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I shook my head.

“Rachel was afraid. You were afraid. Everyone was afraid.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“But nobody asked what she was afraid of.””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

“I love you.””

Lily didn’t answer.

And that silence hurt Vanessa more than anger would have.

Because children don’t stop talking when they hate someone.

They stop talking when they don’t feel safe.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I know I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I laughed quietly.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Mistakes are forgetting a birthday.””

“Mistakes are saying something you regret.””

“What you did was a choice.””

She looked like she wanted to argue.

But she couldn’t.

Because she knew.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“When Lily turned eighteen?””

Her face collapsed.

“No.””

“Then when?””

Silence.

Again.

I nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

Ava stepped forward.

“Mom.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I don’t understand.””

The pain in Ava’s voice was obvious.

“You told us Lily’s mom left.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Ava’s eyes filled.

“From knowing?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Madison was crying now.

“I don’t like everyone fighting.””

I looked at her.

And my heart hurt.

Because she was a child too.

None of this was her fault.

I walked over and hugged her.

“It’s okay.””

But even as I said it, I knew it wasn’t.

Not yet.

Later that night, after we left the mall, I sat at the kitchen table with the documents spread out in front of me.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

For the first time in months, she had fallen asleep without asking if she was “allowed” to keep the nightlight on.

Rachel had gone to a hotel.

Ava and Madison were upstairs with Vanessa.

And I was sitting alone with the truth.

The adoption paperwork.

The guardianship papers.

The messages.

Everything.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

*“You think Vanessa is the only person who lied to you?””*

My stomach tightened.

Another message appeared.

*“Ask her what happened the night Lily was born.””*

I stared at the screen.

Another message came.

*“Ask her why Lily’s birth certificate was changed.””*

I stood immediately.

Because there was one thing I knew.

Secrets had layers.

And every time I pulled one away, another one appeared underneath.

I walked upstairs.

Vanessa was sitting on the edge of the bed.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she already knew.

“What now?””

I held up my phone.

“Someone says Lily’s birth certificate was changed.””

Her face went completely still.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

“Who told you that?””

“That’s not the question.””

I stepped closer.

“The question is why you look like you already know.””

She looked down.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

She wiped her tears.

“Some things are complicated.””

“Then explain them.””

She was silent.

Finally, she whispered:

“Lily’s birth certificate wasn’t changed.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

She looked at me.

And the fear in her eyes was worse than anything before.

“Her birth certificate was never real.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked away.

“It means…”

Her voice cracked.

“There was another person involved.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered the name.

A name I had never heard before.

A name that would change everything.

“Lily’s biological father.””

I stared.

“Her father?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“He’s alive.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where is he?””

She looked at me.

May you like

And said the one thing I never expected.

“He’s been watching Lily for years.””
