Chapter 9: The Woman Who Kept the Original
I stared at the name on the screen.
*Margaret Carter.*
Ethan's mother.
For six months, I had believed she wanted nothing to do with me.
She had stopped answering my calls after the separation. She never asked to see Lena. She never defended me when Ethan told his family that I had abandoned him.
And now her voice had come through a hidden phone, telling me she had placed the camera that recorded the night my life fell apart.
“Call her,” I whispered.
Officer Grant picked up his phone.
“We'll do that.””
The call went straight to voicemail.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Vanessa stood against the wall, staring at Margaret's name.
“You knew she recorded it.””
“I knew she had something,” Vanessa said.
“But you didn't know where it was.””
“No.””
“How long have you known?””
“Since the morning after.””
I turned toward her.
“What did she tell you?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“She found me outside the hospital.””
“What hospital?””
“The one where you were taken that night.””
My chest tightened.
“What did she say?””
“She said she had seen what happened.””
I frowned.
“From where?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She had been watching Ethan for weeks.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“This time I really don't know.””
Officer Grant stepped closer.
“Think carefully. Why would Ethan's mother secretly install a camera in her son's home?””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“Because she didn't trust him.””
That answer landed differently.
I thought about the recording.
Margaret's voice.
I was the one who put the camera in the house.
She had known something was wrong before the night I fell.
That meant my worst memory hadn't started with the argument.
It had started much earlier.
I looked at the old phone.
“Can we retrieve the original recording from this device?””
Officer Grant examined it.
“Maybe. But if the phone was used as a relay, the original might still be somewhere else.””
“Where?””
“Possibly on a cloud account. Another device. A storage drive.””
Vanessa suddenly whispered,
“The locker.””
I turned.
“What?””
“The locker may have it.””
Officer Grant looked at her.
“I thought you said the storage locker contained the evidence you kept.””
“It does.””
“You said you didn't know where the original recording was.””
“I didn't.””
She stared at the floor.
“But Marissa once asked me about a blue envelope.””
“What was inside?””
“I don't know.””
“Where is it?””
“In the locker.””
Officer Grant looked at me.
“We should go.””
I nodded.
Before we left, I went back to Lena.
She was sitting at a small table coloring a picture.
She looked up.
“Are we going home?””
“Yes.””
Her face brightened.
“With you?””
I crouched.
“With me.””
She smiled.
Then she whispered,
“Mommy?””
“What?””
“Daddy told me Grandma was bad.””
I felt a chill.
“Which grandma?””
“His mom.””
Margaret.
I kept my voice calm.
“What did Daddy say about her?””
“That she couldn't be trusted.””
“Why?””
Lena shrugged.
“He said she knew secrets.””
I looked at Officer Grant.
He had heard every word.
“Did Grandma ever visit our house?”” I asked.
Lena nodded.
“Sometimes.””
“When?””
“Before you got sick.””
My heart jumped.
“What did she do?””
“She talked to Daddy.””
“About what?””
“She said he should stop being angry.””
I closed my eyes for a moment.
“And then?””
“Daddy told her to leave.””
Lena colored for a few seconds.
Then looked up.
“She gave me something.””
“What?””
“A little key.””
My breath caught.
“Where is it?””
She reached into the front pocket of her backpack.
Her tiny fingers searched through crayons and stickers.
Then she pulled out a brass key.
I stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
“Grandma gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Before Mommy went to the hospital.””
My whole body went cold.
“What did she tell you?””
Lena looked confused.
“She said, ‘Keep this safe until your mommy needs it.’”
Officer Grant crouched beside us.
“Lena, do you know what the key opens?””
She shook her head.
But Vanessa suddenly whispered,
“The locker.””
Everyone turned.
“How do you know?”” I asked.
“Because Margaret showed me one exactly like it.””
I held the key tightly.
Six months.
All those missing pieces.
Maybe they had been waiting inside a metal box the whole time.
The storage facility smelled of dust, concrete, and old cardboard.
Officer Grant walked ahead while I held Lena's hand.
Vanessa followed behind us.
The manager checked the number Vanessa had given him, then led us down a narrow corridor.
Locker 214.
Vanessa stopped.
“I haven't opened it since the night I put everything inside.””
Officer Grant looked at her.
“Good.””
He unlocked the door.
It rolled upward with a metallic screech.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
Documents.
Old laptops.
Photo envelopes.
A black duffel bag.
And on a shelf near the back, one blue envelope.
I stared at it.
“The envelope.””
Vanessa nodded.
Officer Grant reached for it.
Inside was a small flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
He unfolded it.
His face changed.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
The handwriting was unmistakably Margaret's.
*Naomi,*
*Ethan will tell you I betrayed you. He will say I knew what he was planning. That part is true. What he won't tell you is why.*
*I was trying to get evidence before he hurt you again.*
My hands trembled.
I read the next line.
*The original recording is not on this drive. This is only the key to finding it.*
At the bottom was an address.
Not a house.
Not a business.
A bank.
I looked at Officer Grant.
“What is this?””
He read the address.
“Private document storage.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That's where Marissa kept family records.””
I stared at her.
“You knew about that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Ethan used it.””
Officer Grant opened the flash drive.
A single file appeared.
*FINAL_MESSAGE.mp4*
He clicked.
Margaret appeared on screen.
She looked older than I remembered.
Tired.
Frightened.
She sat at a kitchen table, hands folded tightly.
“If Naomi is watching this, then Ethan has already done what I feared.””
She looked away from the camera.
“I didn't install the camera because I hated my son.””
Her eyes filled.
“I installed it because I was afraid of him.””
My throat tightened.
Margaret continued.
“He had become obsessed with controlling Naomi. He kept recordings. He kept copies of messages. He kept documents that made ordinary arguments look like proof that she was unstable.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She stared at the floor.
Margaret took a breath.
“The night Naomi was injured, I heard enough to know something terrible had happened.””
Her voice shook.
“I watched the recording afterward.””
She paused.
“Ethan didn't just want custody of Lena.””
I felt my heart pound.
“He wanted Naomi discredited.””
The video continued.
“He was preparing to accuse her of abandoning the child. He planned to use her hospitalization as evidence that she was incapable of caring for Lena.””
My hands tightened.
“He also had another plan.””
Margaret leaned toward the camera.
“He intended to leave the country with Lena if the custody case went against him.””
Vanessa gasped.
I felt sick.
“That's why he had the passports.””
Margaret nodded slowly.
“I discovered the bag after the incident. I removed it before Ethan could use it.””
The room went silent.
“But there was one thing I couldn't take.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“The original recording.””
She whispered the next words.
“Marissa has it.””
My heart dropped.
Margaret continued.
“Marissa believes the recording proves Naomi attacked Ethan first.””
I shook my head.
“That isn't what it shows.””
Margaret seemed to hear me through time.
“No. It doesn't.””
She looked down.
“But there is a second recording.””
Officer Grant leaned closer.
“A second camera?””
“No,” Margaret said on the screen.
“A second file.””
She paused.
“One that shows what happened immediately before Naomi entered the kitchen.””
My blood ran cold.
“What happened?””
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“I wasn't able to recover it.””
She reached toward the camera.
“But someone else did.””
The screen froze for a second.
Then resumed.
“His name is Daniel.””
Officer Grant stopped moving.
“Daniel?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“The school guard?””
I looked at Officer Grant.
Margaret continued.
“He worked security for Ethan's office.””
My heart raced.
“He found the missing footage after Marissa deleted it.””
The video suddenly glitched.
Then Margaret spoke faster.
“Daniel copied it and gave it to someone he trusted.””
“Who?”” I whispered.
Margaret looked directly at the camera.
“Your brother.””
I stopped breathing.
I didn't have a brother.
I never had a brother.
My mother had raised me alone.
I looked at Vanessa.
She stared at me in confusion.
“Naomi…”
“I don't have a brother.””
Officer Grant checked the file metadata.
“There's more.””
“What?””
“The video was edited.””
Margaret's face returned to the screen.
But now her voice sounded frightened.
“If you've reached this part, then they found the first copy.””
She looked behind her.
Then whispered,
“Trust no one connected to Ethan.””
A noise sounded off camera.
Margaret turned.
Someone was approaching.
She stood abruptly.
“I have to go.””
The video ended.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Lena spoke quietly.
“Mommy?””
I looked down.
“What?””
She pointed toward the door.
“That's the man.””
“What man?””
“The one I saw at school.””
I turned.
A man stood at the far end of the storage corridor.
He was watching us.
Officer Grant immediately moved in front of Lena.
“Stay back.””
The man turned and ran.
Officer Grant chased him.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Naomi.””
I pulled away.
“We have to go.””
But before I could move, my phone buzzed.
A message from the same unknown number.
*You finally found the locker.*
Then another appeared.
*Now ask Officer Grant why he already knew about Daniel.*
I looked at the officer.
May you like
He was coming back toward us.
And something in his face told me the message wasn't a lie.
