Chapter 3: The Call That Changed Everything

The voice on the phone was distorted by a bad connection, but one thing came through clearly.

“This woman should not be taking that child home.””

My stomach twisted.

Principal Harris looked at me, then at Vanessa.

“Who is this?”” he asked.

There was a pause.

“Someone who knows what Naomi did.””

I stepped forward.

“What did I do?””

The person on the phone laughed softly.

“You know exactly what you did.””

“I don't.””

Vanessa suddenly covered her mouth.

That was when I noticed something.

She wasn't surprised.

She was terrified.

Principal Harris saw it too.

“Ms. Reed,” he said, “do you know who this is?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

It was too fast.

Too rehearsed.

I stared at her.

“You know them.””

“I don't.””

“You do.””

“Naomi, stop.””

“Then tell me why you're shaking.””

She looked down at her hands.

The phone crackled.

The stranger spoke again.

“Ask her about the night at the hospital.””

My blood ran cold.

Principal Harris frowned.

“What hospital?””

Vanessa whispered, “This is inappropriate.””

The voice continued.

“She knows what happened.””

I moved closer to the desk.

“Who are you?””

Silence.

Then the call ended.

Principal Harris slowly lowered the receiver.

Nobody spoke.

Outside the office, footsteps passed in the hallway. Somewhere nearby, children were laughing.

It felt wrong.

The world was continuing as normal while mine had just split open.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened at the hospital?””

“Nothing.””

“You hesitated.””

“I was nervous.””

“You knew the caller.””

“I told you I didn't.””

Principal Harris turned toward her.

“Then explain why the caller mentioned the hospital.””

Vanessa's face had gone pale.

“I have no idea.””

I stared at her.

“You've been telling everyone I abandoned Lena.””

She said nothing.

“You removed my name from the pickup list.””

Nothing.

“You replaced my emergency contact information.””

Still nothing.

“And now someone is claiming I was never supposed to have custody of my own daughter.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“You're twisting everything.””

“I haven't twisted anything.””

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at Lena through the glass panel in the office door.

My daughter was sitting in a chair outside with the school counselor, clutching her backpack against her chest.

Vanessa stared at her for several seconds.

Then she whispered, “I was trying to protect her.””

“From me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked back at me.

“Because I know what happened.””

“What happened?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But she didn't cry.

“I can't tell you.””

Principal Harris stood.

“Then this meeting is over until we can verify the accusation.””

Vanessa jumped to her feet.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“No?””

“If you call the police—”

“I didn't say anything about police.””

She froze.

That single reaction said more than any confession could have.

Principal Harris slowly reached for the phone again.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Wait.””

I watched her carefully.

“You're afraid of something.””

“No.””

“You're afraid the records will be checked.””

“No.””

“You're afraid somebody will find out what you did.””

Her face hardened.

“You think this is about me?””

“Isn't it?””

“You have no idea what I've been dealing with.””

“What have you been dealing with?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Your husband.””

The room went silent.

I stopped breathing.

“Ethan?””

She nodded.

“What does Ethan have to do with this?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Everything.””

Ethan had been Lena's father.

My husband for seven years.

My ex-husband for less than one.

We had separated after months of arguments that seemed to have no beginning and no end.

He had blamed me for everything.

I had blamed him.

And then, one night, he had left.

Just like that.

No goodbye to Lena.

No explanation.

No note.

Nothing.

I had told myself it was over.

But Vanessa had just spoken his name like it was a weapon.

“What did Ethan tell you?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

“He said you weren't stable.””

My body went rigid.

“He said you couldn't take care of Lena.””

I stared at her.

“You believed him?””

“I had reasons.””

“What reasons?””

She looked toward the door.

“Do you remember the night before your surgery?””

I did.

Every second.

I had been exhausted.

I remembered packing Lena's overnight bag.

I remembered kissing her forehead.

I remembered Ethan arguing with me in the kitchen.

And I remembered Vanessa arriving.

“You were there,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I came because Ethan called me.””

My heart pounded.

“What did he tell you?””

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

“That you were going to leave.””

“I wasn't.””

“That you had another life planned.””

“I didn't.””

“He said you were going to take Lena and disappear.””

I stared at her.

“That was a lie.””

“I know that now.””

“Now?””

“Yes.””

The answer came so quietly it nearly disappeared.

Principal Harris looked between us.

“Then why did you alter the records?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because I thought Naomi was going to disappear.””

“I never said that.””

“You didn't have to.””

“What does that mean?””

She opened her eyes.

“You left documents.””

“What documents?””

“In your house.””

My pulse quickened.

“What documents?””

“I can't.””

“Tell me.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Travel documents.””

My mind raced.

Passports.

Birth certificates.

A folder I had kept in a drawer.

Documents for an overseas work opportunity I'd considered months earlier.

I remembered them.

But I had never made plans to leave.

Never.

“Those were old,” I said.

“I didn't know that.””

“You could have asked me.””

“You weren't answering your phone.””

“I was recovering from surgery!””

“I know!””

Her sudden shout echoed through the office.

Then she covered her mouth.

Lena appeared in the doorway.

“Mommy?””

Everything stopped.

I immediately turned.

“Baby.””

She ran toward me.

I caught her and pulled her against my chest.

She buried her face in my shoulder.

Vanessa looked away.

Lena whispered, “Don't let her take me.””

My chest hurt.

“I won't.””

Principal Harris walked over.

“Lena, nobody is taking you anywhere without your mother's permission.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Unless there's a court order.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She bit her lip.

“I didn't mean—”

“What court order?””

“There isn't one.””

“But you just said—”

“I was talking generally.””

“No. You weren't.””

Principal Harris's expression changed.

“Ms. Reed, does a court order exist?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“No.””

“Has one ever existed?””

“No.””

“Then why would you mention one?””

She didn't answer.

My mind was spinning.

The complaint.

The hospital.

Ethan.

The travel documents.

The altered school records.

Every piece seemed connected.

But there was one piece missing.

Someone had made a complaint about me.

Someone had given Vanessa enough information to believe I would lose custody.

And someone had apparently convinced the school I had abandoned my daughter.

I turned to Principal Harris.

“I need to know who submitted that complaint.””

He nodded.

“I'll retrieve the record.””

“And I want a copy.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“You don't understand what you're asking for.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don't.””

“What are you afraid I'll find?””

She looked at me.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then her phone buzzed.

Vanessa pulled it from her pocket.

She glanced at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

I saw only one line before she turned the phone away.

*UNKNOWN NUMBER: SHE KNOWS ABOUT THE RECORDING.*

Vanessa locked the screen.

Too late.

I had seen it.

“What recording?””

Her eyes met mine.

“I don't know.””

I took one step toward her.

“What recording, Vanessa?””

She backed away.

“I said I don't know.””

Principal Harris looked at the phone.

“Who sent that?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then her phone buzzed again.

This time, she didn't look.

Neither did she need to.

The message preview appeared across the screen.

*DELETE THE VIDEO BEFORE SHE FINDS IT.*

Vanessa's hand began to shake.

I stared at her.

“A video?””

She said nothing.

I held Lena tighter.

“Of what?””

Vanessa looked at me, and the fear in her face finally had nowhere left to hide.

May you like

Then she whispered four words.

“The night you disappeared.””
