Chapter 4: The Video
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
“The night I disappeared?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
She stood beside the principal's desk with her phone clenched in one hand, staring at the screen as though it might explode.
Lena was still wrapped around me.
I lowered my voice.
“What happened that night?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't want to know.””
“That's not your decision.””
“It should be.””
“Why?””
She looked at Lena.
“Because she was there.””
My arms tightened around my daughter.
“Lena was six months old.””
“I know.””
“You're talking about the night before my surgery.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I can't.””
Principal Harris stepped between us.
“Ms. Reed, whatever you're hiding has now become relevant to a child custody dispute and school records. You need to understand the seriousness of this.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don't understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She opened her mouth.
Her phone buzzed again.
Everyone looked down.
Another message appeared.
*YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.*
Vanessa turned the screen off.
I stared at her.
“Who is threatening you?””
“No one.””
“Then why are you shaking?””
“Because this is getting out of control.””
“It got out of control when you erased my name from my daughter's records.””
“I thought I was protecting her!””
“By lying about me?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Yes!””
The confession hung in the air.
She realized what she'd admitted and immediately looked away.
Principal Harris folded his arms.
“Protecting Lena from what?””
Vanessa whispered, “From what I saw.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What did you see?””
She shook her head.
“Not here.””
“Then where?””
“Your house.””
I stared at her.
“My house?””
She nodded.
“The night before the hospital.””
I remembered that night again.
Rain tapping against the windows.
Ethan shouting from the kitchen.
My hands shaking while I tried to zip Lena's little overnight bag.
Then a moment I had forced myself to forget.
A sound.
A crash.
A scream.
I had always assumed it was the argument that came back to me in fragments because of exhaustion.
But Vanessa had been there.
She had seen something.
“What exactly did you see?””
Vanessa whispered, “I saw you on the floor.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“You were on the floor.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“Who was there?””
She looked at me.
“Ethan.””
I closed my eyes for one second.
Then opened them.
“What was he doing?””
Vanessa looked toward Lena.
“Not here.””
I stepped closer.
“Was he hurting me?””
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa.””
“I said I don't know!””
I flinched.
She pressed both hands against her temples.
“I came through the back door. I heard shouting. When I got inside, you were on the floor and Ethan was standing over you.””
Principal Harris's expression darkened.
“What happened next?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“You got up.””
“And?””
“You told him to leave.””
I waited.
“What else?””
“You were holding your head.””
My fingertips went numb.
I touched my temple without realizing it.
“I don't remember that.””
“You were crying.””
“I don't remember.””
“You told Ethan that he couldn't take Lena.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Then what happened?””
She lowered her voice.
“He said something.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
“He said, ‘Nobody is going to believe you.’”
A cold shiver ran through me.
That sentence sounded like him.
So much like him.
But there was more.
I could feel it.
“What did I do?””
“You picked up the phone.””
“To call the police?””
Vanessa nodded.
“And then?””
She looked at me.
“Ethan took it.””
Silence.
Lena shifted against my chest.
I kissed the top of her head.
“Then what?””
Vanessa's eyes filled again.
“I left.””
I stared.
“You left?””
“I was scared.””
“You left me there?””
“I thought Ethan would calm down.””
“You thought?””
“I didn't know what else to do.””
“You could have called 911.””
“I should have.””
“Yes.””
“I know.””
I almost couldn't speak.
“You watched him threaten me and you walked away.””
Her tears began falling.
“I was twenty-four.””
“I don't care how old you were.””
“I was terrified.””
“So was I.””
She looked at the floor.
“I know.””
Principal Harris spoke quietly.
“And the recording?””
Vanessa froze.
I looked at him.
“You knew about the recording.””
She didn't answer.
Principal Harris continued.
“Did you record what happened that night?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn't.””
“But someone did.””
“I don't know.””
“You just said there was a recording.””
“I said there might be.””
My heart pounded.
“Where is it?””
“I don't know.””
“Who has it?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you being threatened?””
Vanessa looked at her phone.
Another message appeared.
This time, the preview was longer.
*YOU SHOULD HAVE DELETED IT SIX MONTHS AGO.*
My blood ran cold.
Six months.
The exact amount of time since my marriage collapsed.
I pointed at the phone.
“Whoever that is thinks you have the video.””
“I don't have it.””
“Then why would they tell you to delete it?””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“Because they think I do.””
“Who?””
She wouldn't answer.
I moved closer.
“Is it Ethan?””
Her silence was immediate.
And devastating.
“You're afraid of him.””
Vanessa whispered, “You should be too.””
I felt Lena look up at me.
“Mommy?””
I forced my face to soften.
“It's okay.””
But it wasn't.
Not anymore.
Principal Harris reached for the phone.
“Ms. Reed, give me the device.””
“No.””
“If someone is threatening you—”
“I said no.””
“Then I may have to involve law enforcement.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“You don't understand what happens if they find out I talked.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
Then, very quietly:
“Ethan.””
My stomach dropped.
“Where is he?””
“I don't know.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I haven't seen him since last year.””
“Then how is he contacting you?””
“He isn't.””
“Someone is.””
She looked at her phone again.
“I don't know who.””
I reached for my own phone.
“I'll call him.””
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“No.””
I pulled away.
“Why?””
“Because if he knows you're looking, he'll disappear.””
A strange stillness came over me.
“You know where he is.””
“No.””
“You know more than you're saying.””
“I know enough to be afraid.””
Before I could respond, the office door opened.
A woman from the front office stood there holding a folder.
“Principal Harris?””
He turned.
“Yes?””
“This was delivered from records.””
She handed him a thick envelope.
He opened it.
I watched his eyes scan the first page.
Then he looked at me.
“I think you need to see this.””
I took the document.
It was a photocopy of an incident report.
My name.
Lena's name.
Ethan's name.
And underneath them was a date.
The night before my surgery.
I read the first line.
*Parent reports domestic disturbance involving spouse.*
My hands started shaking.
“I never filed this.””
Principal Harris nodded.
“I know.””
I looked lower.
There was a signature.
My signature.
Except it wasn't mine.
Someone had copied it.
I looked at Vanessa.
She whispered, “I didn't do that.””
“Then who did?””
“I don't know.””
I turned the page.
There was a witness statement.
And there, in black ink, was Vanessa's name.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“You gave a statement.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“What did you tell them?””
“I told them what I saw.””
“Then why wasn't I told?””
“I assumed someone would contact you.””
“No one did.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
I read the statement.
The first part described the argument.
The second part described Ethan taking my phone.
Then one sentence made the room spin.
*Witness states that Naomi Carter appeared unconscious for several seconds after striking her head.*
I looked up.
“I was unconscious?””
Vanessa nodded.
“You didn't tell me.””
“You didn't remember.””
“You let me believe I simply collapsed.””
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
“How?””
“By staying out of it.””
I stared at her.
“That's not safety.””
She cried openly now.
“I was scared.””
“So you watched everything happen and then helped someone erase me from my daughter's life?””
Her answer was barely audible.
“Not at first.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
Then at Principal Harris.
Then back at me.
“When the police came that night, Ethan showed them something.””
“What?””
“A video.””
The room went silent.
“What video?””
She wiped her face.
“Not the one you've been asking about.””
My pulse accelerated.
“What was on it?””
“I don't know.””
“You saw it?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because Ethan told the police it proved you were unstable.””
My fingers tightened around the report.
“What did it show?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You.””
“Doing what?””
She swallowed.
“Saying something.””
“What?””
“I don't know. I never saw the whole thing.””
“Then why did the police believe him?””
“Because they already had another recording.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Another?””
Vanessa nodded.
“The one that disappeared from the case file.””
Principal Harris looked stunned.
“A recording disappeared from an official report?””
“Yes.””
“Who removed it?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I don't know.””
My phone suddenly vibrated.
I looked down.
A message from an unknown number.
No words.
Just a video attachment.
My hands went numb.
Vanessa saw the screen.
Her face turned white.
“Don't open it.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
May you like
She whispered,
“Because that's the recording I was told never existed.””
