Chapter 9: The Lake House Secret

The photograph stayed on my screen long after the car stopped moving.

Emma.

Standing beside Richard Mercer.

Inside the lake house.

Holding the evidence that could destroy Daniel.

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

“Claire?””

Emma’s voice came from beside me.

The same voice that had comforted me.

The same voice that had told me she would always protect me.

I turned slowly.

She was sitting in the passenger seat.

Not in the photograph.

Not physically.

But suddenly, I didn’t know what was real anymore.

“Why?””

The word came out quietly.

Emma looked confused.

“Why what?””

I turned the phone toward her.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Enough for me to see it.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

And that hurt more than anything.

“Claire…”

I pulled the phone back.

“You knew.””

Emma’s lips parted.

“I can explain.””

The sentence felt like a knife.

Because I had heard it too many times.

Daniel.

Natalie.

Everyone.

Always an explanation after the damage was done.

“You were there?””

Emma looked down.

“No.””

“Then why do you look like you know exactly what this is?””

Silence.

The police officer in the front seat turned around.

“What’s going on?””

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

Because my sister was looking at me with the same sadness she had shown when she first warned me about Daniel.

Only this time, I didn’t know if she was protecting me or hiding something.

“Emma.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me the truth.””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“I was trying to protect you.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“From who?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the worst possible answer.

The officer stepped out of the car.

“We need to know if there’s a threat.””

Emma looked at him.

Then at me.

Finally, she said:

“Richard knows Claire found the files.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

Emma looked away.

“Because I told him.””

The world became silent.

I stared at her.

“You told him?””

She immediately shook her head.

“Not like that.””

“How else do you tell someone a secret?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I could control it.””

I stepped back.

“You thought you could control Richard Mercer?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I thought I could use what he wanted against him.””

The officer frowned.

“Start from the beginning.””

Emma looked toward the lake house in the distance.

Then she began.

“Seven years ago, I knew Daniel was hiding something.””

I listened.

“I didn’t know about Rebecca at first. I only knew Daniel was scared.””

I remembered.

The way Emma had always watched him.

The way she never relaxed around him.

“I started looking into him.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“You investigated him?””

She nodded.

“I found financial records.””

The same records Rebecca found.

“The Mercer account.””

Emma swallowed.

“I found transfers between Richard’s accounts and Daniel’s.””

My heart sank.

“Your father knew?””

The officer corrected me.

“His father.””

I nodded.

Daniel’s father.

Richard.

Emma continued.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because you loved him.””

The answer hurt.

Because it was true.

“I thought if I showed you proof, you would leave him.””

I stared.

“And?””

“And Daniel found out I was looking.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did he do?””

“He threatened me.””

The officer immediately focused.

“Threatened you how?””

Emma hesitated.

“He told me I didn’t understand what I was dealing with.””

A pause.

“He said Richard had ruined people before.””

The words settled over us.

“He said if I kept digging, I would disappear too.””

I looked toward the lake house.

Richard.

A man who smiled at family dinners.

A man who gave wedding speeches.

A man who knew exactly how to appear harmless.

“Then why were you with him in the photo?””

Emma looked at the phone.

Her expression broke.

“Because I went there tonight.””

“Why?””

“To find the evidence.””

I shook my head.

“Then why does the picture show you standing with him?””

Emma whispered:

“Because I found him already there.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happened?””

She looked toward the house.

“He knew I was coming.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Is Richard armed?””

Emma looked afraid.

“I don’t know.””

That was enough.

We moved quickly.

The lake house sat beyond a narrow dirt road surrounded by trees.

The same kind of place people went when they wanted to disappear.

No neighbors.

No witnesses.

No questions.

The closer we got, the worse I felt.

Because this was where secrets lived.

Not in offices.

Not in courtrooms.

Not in public.

Secrets lived in quiet places.

Places where people believed nobody would ever find them.

The officer raised a hand as we approached.

“Stay behind me.””

I nodded.

Emma grabbed my arm.

“Claire.””

I looked at her.

“I am sorry.””

The apology almost broke me.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I believed she meant it.

But trust was something different.

Trust was a glass.

Once shattered, you could put the pieces back together.

But it would never be the same.

The front door was open.

Again.

Like someone wanted us to enter.

The officer stepped inside.

“Police!””

No answer.

We followed.

The living room looked exactly like the photograph.

The folder was gone.

But the table was disturbed.

A chair knocked sideways.

A broken glass on the floor.

Something had happened.

“Richard?””

My voice echoed.

Nothing.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

The officer moved toward the stairs.

We followed.

At the top was a hallway.

Three doors.

One open.

One locked.

One slightly moving.

The officer approached the moving door.

Then stopped.

He looked at me.

“Stay back.””

He opened it.

Inside was Richard.

Sitting on the floor.

His hands were bleeding.

And beside him was the folder.

The evidence.

But Richard wasn’t alone.

A woman was standing behind him.

Older.

Shaking.

Holding a photograph.

I recognized her immediately.

Evelyn Mercer.

Daniel’s mother.

Alive.

Again.

My mind couldn’t process it.

Another impossible person.

Another secret.

Richard looked at me.

His face was defeated.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Defeated.

“Claire.””

I couldn’t speak.

The officer moved forward.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

Evelyn looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

The words were familiar.

Too familiar.

I stared at her.

“You’re alive.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Daniel thought you were gone.””

Her expression changed.

“Daniel thought what his father told him to think.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Evelyn.””

She looked at him.

“You lied to our son for seven years.””

The room went silent.

The officer looked between them.

“What happened here?””

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

Then looked directly at me.

“I need you to understand something.””

I waited.

“Daniel was never the beginning of this story.””

My heart tightened.

“Then who was?””

She looked at Richard.

“The person who taught him how to become that way.””

Richard looked away.

I felt sick.

Because I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

“Richard.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

The officer opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Records.

And one final item.

A letter.

The officer read the name aloud.

“Rebecca Hayes.””

Everyone froze.

Evelyn looked at me.

“That letter was written the night Rebecca survived.””

I stared.

“She wrote it?””

“Yes.””

“What did it say?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She wrote that if anything happened to her, the truth should go to Claire Mercer.””

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“Because Rebecca knew Daniel would eventually marry you.””

I felt cold.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because she knew you were the only person who might be able to stop him.””

The room became silent.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked.

The screen showed the name.

Daniel.

I answered.

But before I could speak, his voice came through.

“Claire.””

He sounded terrified.

“Where are you?””

I didn’t answer.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Don’t trust my mother.””

I froze.

A pause.

May you like

Then Daniel whispered:

“She’s the one who started it all.””
