Chapter 5: The Woman Who Survived
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The old Mercer house seemed to hold its breath.
Daniel stood in the middle of the room, still gripping his phone, staring at nothing.
Linda’s face had gone completely pale.
And I…
I couldn’t make sense of the word.
Rebecca.
The woman Daniel had told me was gone.
The woman whose name belonged to a story from seven years ago.
The woman whose death had just been used to tear open every secret in my marriage.
Was alive.
I looked at Daniel.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That terrified me more than anything.
Because Daniel always answered.
He always had an explanation.
A carefully prepared sentence.
A logical reason.
But now he looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.
“Daniel.””
My voice was sharper.
“Who is Rebecca?””
His eyes moved toward me.
“I told you.””
“You told me she died.””
Silence.
“You told me her name was part of your past.””
Silence.
“You told me there was nothing left to know.””
His jaw tightened.
“Claire, you don’t understand.””
I laughed quietly.
“No, Daniel. That’s the problem.””
I stepped closer.
“I understand one thing very clearly.””
My fingers tightened around the envelope.
“You have spent years deciding what I was allowed to know.””
Linda watched him carefully.
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Linda.””
“Where is Rebecca?””
His expression changed.
A mixture of anger and fear.
“She’s at St. Catherine’s Hospital.””
The room went still.
I stared at him.
“She’s been alive this whole time?””
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
The answer was barely a whisper.
A million questions rushed through my mind at once.
But one stayed louder than the rest.
“Why did you let everyone believe she was dead?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, I saw something I hadn’t seen all night.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Pain.
But pain wasn’t an apology.
Pain didn’t undo seven years of lies.
“I didn’t tell people she was dead.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then what did you tell them?””
His silence lasted too long.
I already knew.
“You let people assume.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
I felt something inside me crack.
“You let me believe she was dead.””
“I didn’t know how to explain it.””
I stared at him.
“You had seven years.””
He had no answer.
The front door suddenly opened.
All three of us turned.
Emma rushed inside.
Her eyes found me immediately.
Then Daniel.
Then Linda.
She stopped.
“What happened?””
I looked at my sister.
And for the first time since the gala, I felt something close to relief.
Someone who was mine.
Someone who wasn’t hiding something.
“Emma…”
She walked toward me.
“Claire, what’s going on?””
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
How could I explain?
How could I summarize a night where my husband gave me divorce papers, revealed an affair, and then accidentally admitted the woman he said died was alive?
Emma looked at Daniel.
Her expression hardened.
“What did you do?””
Daniel looked away.
That was enough for her.
She didn’t need details.
She already knew.
I turned toward her.
“You knew something.””
Emma’s face changed.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You knew.””
She sighed.
“I knew something was wrong.””
“How much?””
She looked down.
“Not enough.””
I laughed sadly.
“That’s what everyone says.””
Emma reached for my hand.
“I swear, I didn’t know about Rebecca.””
I searched her face.
And I believed her.
That was the strange thing.
After eleven years of trusting Daniel, I could barely look at him.
But my sister’s honesty felt obvious.
“What did you know?”” I asked.
Emma glanced at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Seven years ago, before your wedding, I saw him fighting with a woman.””
“Rebecca?””
She nodded.
“I didn’t know her name then.””
“When?””
“Two days before your engagement party.””
I frowned.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Emma’s eyes filled with frustration.
“Because I tried.””
The words hurt.
“What?””
“I told you something felt wrong.””
I remembered.
A conversation in my apartment.
Emma sitting across from me.
Her voice careful.
Her words vague.
“I just don’t trust him.””
I had gotten angry.
I had defended Daniel.
I had told her she was judging him unfairly.
“You said I was jealous.””
Emma looked down.
“And you said I didn’t understand what it felt like to love someone.””
The memory burned.
Because she had been trying to protect me.
And I had chosen him.
Daniel finally spoke.
“This isn’t the time.””
Emma turned toward him.
“No. Actually, this is exactly the time.””
Her voice was cold.
“You don’t get to control the conversation anymore.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell us.””
Silence.
Again.
Always silence when the truth arrived.
I looked at him.
“Take us to the hospital.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“What?””
“Rebecca.””
I stepped toward the door.
“I want to see her.””
His face tightened.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I stopped.
“No?””
“It’s complicated.””
I almost smiled.
“Everything with you is complicated.””
“Claire, you need to understand—”
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“I don’t need another explanation.””
My voice lowered.
“I need the truth.””
Daniel looked at Linda.
Then Emma.
Then me.
Finally, he nodded.
But before we left, he walked toward the fireplace.
He reached behind an old wooden panel.
I watched carefully.
A hidden compartment.
My heart sank.
Because people who had nothing to hide didn’t build places to hide things.
Daniel pulled out a small black box.
He stared at it.
Then handed it to me.
“What is this?””
“My mother’s.””
I opened it.
Inside were old documents.
Photographs.
A flash drive.
And a handwritten letter.
The first line made me freeze.
Daniel, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the consequences of what you did.
I looked up.
Daniel’s face had lost all color.
“What did you do?””
He whispered:
“Claire…”
But I kept reading.
The letter continued.
I spent years believing I could fix your mistakes. I believed love could make you change. I was wrong.
My hands trembled.
Evelyn Mercer wasn’t protecting Daniel.
She was exposing him.
I looked at him.
“Your mother knew.””
He didn’t answer.
“Your mother knew what happened.””
His eyes closed.
“Yes.””
The room felt smaller.
“What happened that night?””
Daniel looked toward the floor.
And for the first time, he stopped pretending.
“I was angry.””
The words were quiet.
“I thought Rebecca was going to ruin everything.””
Linda’s face tightened.
“Everything?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She found the files.””
“What files?””
“The financial records.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“The Mercer account.””
He nodded.
“She knew I had moved money.””
“Why?””
His answer came slowly.
“Because I wanted to prove myself.””
I stared at him.
“So you stole?””
“I was going to pay it back.””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“I know.””
“You ruined someone’s life.””
“I know.””
The honesty shocked me.
But it didn’t make it better.
Daniel sat down heavily.
“Rebecca found out. She threatened to expose me.””
“And then?””
His hands shook.
“I followed her.””
The room became silent.
“I wanted to talk to her.””
Linda whispered:
“You chased her.””
Daniel didn’t look at her.
“I lost control.””
My stomach turned.
“Did you hurt her?””
Daniel looked at me.
And his answer was barely audible.
“Yes.””
A thousand emotions hit me at once.
Anger.
Disgust.
Confusion.
Fear.
But before I could say anything, Daniel’s phone rang again.
This time, he didn’t answer.
The screen lit up.
A hospital notification.
*Patient update: Rebecca Hayes has regained consciousness.*
I looked at the name.
Hayes.
Linda’s daughter.
Alive.
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened to her?””
He stared at the phone.
Then whispered:
“She wasn’t supposed to survive.””
The words hung in the air.
A terrible realization settled over me.
Daniel hadn’t just hidden a secret.
He had spent seven years running from one.
And now that secret was awake.
Waiting.
The phone rang again.
Daniel finally answered.
A doctor’s voice came through the speaker.
I couldn’t hear everything.
Only fragments.
“...she asked for Claire Mercer…”
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked at me.
“She knows your name.””
I felt the room spin.
“Why would she know me?””
Nobody answered.
Then the doctor said something that changed everything.
Daniel’s face went completely blank.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“What?””
Emma stepped closer.
“What did they say?””
Daniel looked at me.
And his voice cracked.
“Rebecca said she has proof.””
May you like
A pause.
“She said she’s been waiting seven years to tell you what I did.””
