Chapter 9: The Last Eleven Minutes

I stared at Nora Bennett.
“What do you mean, who my real father was?””
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she turned toward the hospital chapel and looked at the narrow windows glowing in the evening light.
“There's a difference between the man listed on your birth certificate and the man who helped create you,” she said.
Daniel went rigid beside me.
“Are you saying the birth records were wrong?””
Nora nodded slowly.
“That's what Elena believed.””
I felt the ground shift beneath my feet.
“No. Daniel is my biological father. Elena's letter said so.””
“The letter said Daniel loved you,” Nora replied.
“It didn't say he was your biological father.””
I turned toward Daniel.
He looked as shocked as I felt.
“Emily,” he said quietly, “I believed I was your father. Elena told me I was.””
“Then what is Nora talking about?””
Nora opened the black case again and removed a folded laboratory report.
“The hospital conducted a paternity test before Elena died. Michael arranged it through a private laboratory because he suspected the child wasn't biologically related to Daniel.””
Daniel snatched the paper.
“That's impossible. Elena never told me about a test.””
Nora met his eyes.
“She didn't know about it until after the results came back.””
Daniel unfolded the report.
I watched his face as he read.
First confusion.
Then disbelief.
Then a kind of grief I had never seen before.
“What does it say?”” I whispered.
He couldn't speak.
Nora answered.
“The test excluded Daniel Hayes as your biological father.””
I stepped backward.
“No.””
“The result identified another man as a strong biological match. Franklin Ward's brother, Thomas Ward.””
The name meant nothing to me.
I had never heard of Thomas Ward.
Daniel shook his head.
“This is a lie.””
Nora looked at him sadly.
“I wish it were.””
He stared at the report again.
“Who was Thomas Ward?””
“An accountant who worked for Hayes Industries. He and Elena had a brief relationship before she became involved with you.””
Daniel's expression crumpled.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she believed the child was yours. The test was performed without her consent, and she thought Michael was trying to intimidate her.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was still holding the report, but his fingers had gone limp.
For seventeen years, he'd believed he'd lost his daughter.
Now he was being told that the daughter he'd mourned might never have been biologically his.
I wanted to comfort him.
But I was struggling to keep myself standing.
“So who am I?”” I whispered.
Nora looked at me.
“You're Emily Hayes. Elena's daughter. That hasn't changed.””
“But Daniel isn't my father?””
“Not biologically, according to the report.””
Daniel shut his eyes.
“I loved her,” he whispered.
“I loved Elena. When she told me she was pregnant, she said the baby was mine. I believed her.””
Nora lowered her head.
“I'm sorry.””
He let out a broken laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked at the report.
“Why would Elena hide the truth?””
Nora hesitated.
“Because Thomas Ward was married. He had two children, a prominent family, and a career that would have been destroyed by the scandal. Elena believed she could protect everyone by keeping the relationship secret.””
“And Michael found out?””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
Nora's face hardened.
“He used the information to control Elena. He told her that if she ever challenged his management of Hayes Industries, he'd expose the affair and make sure she lost custody of her child.””
Daniel looked up.
“Michael was stealing from the company.””
“He was. But he knew Elena would hesitate to expose him if doing so meant revealing the truth about your relationship.””
I stared at the photograph of the hospital room.
“Why did Michael want me if I wasn't Daniel's daughter?””
Nora's expression changed.
“Because you were still Elena's child. The trust belonged to her descendants, regardless of who your biological father was. Michael couldn't inherit it himself, but he could control you if he became your legal guardian.””
I felt sick.
“So all of this was about money.””
“Money, power, and the fear of being exposed,” Nora said.
“Michael had spent years moving assets out of Hayes Industries. He needed control of the trust to protect himself.””
Daniel stared at the ground.
“And Thomas Ward?””
“He died eight years ago. His family has never been told about you.””
I tried to process the information.
My biological father was a dead man whose name I'd never heard.
The man who had fought to find me might not be related to me by blood.
The man who had raised me had tried to steal my inheritance.
And the woman who had raised me had helped conceal the evidence.
It was too much.
I turned away and walked toward the chapel steps.
Daniel followed, stopping a few feet behind me.
“Emily.””
I shook my head.
“Please don't tell me everything is going to be okay.””
“I wasn't going to.””
“Good.””
I pressed my palms against my eyes.
“I don't know who I am anymore.””
Daniel stood quietly.
Then he said, “When you were eight, you fell off your bicycle in the park. You scraped both knees, and you refused to let me clean them because you said the antiseptic smelled like old pennies.””
I lowered my hands.
He smiled faintly through his tears.
“You insisted you could walk home. You made it half a block before you started crying. I carried you the rest of the way.””
I remembered the bicycle.
The green one with the white basket.
I remembered Daniel walking beside me, holding the handlebars while I learned to balance.
“I remember,” I whispered.
“You don't have to be my biological daughter for that memory to be real.””
His voice trembled.
“I won't pretend I know what this changes. But I know what I felt when I held you for the first time. I know what I felt every birthday I wasn't allowed to see you. And I know that if you never call me Dad again, I'll still want you to be safe.””
I began to cry.
Not because the words solved anything.
Because they didn't.
He wasn't demanding a place in my life. He was offering me the freedom to decide what he meant to me.
I stepped forward and hugged him.
He held me carefully, as though he was afraid I might disappear.
For a moment, the world stopped demanding answers.
Then Laura approached us.
Her face was pale.
“Emily, I need to tell you something.””
I released Daniel.
“What now?””
She swallowed.
“When I gave Michael the missing footage, he told me that if I ever revealed what I'd done, he would make sure I went to prison.””
I stared at her.
“You've already told me you gave him the recording.””
“I know. But there's something else.””
She looked at Nora.
“The last eleven minutes weren't just footage of Michael and Elena. There was a second camera in the room.””
Nora nodded.
“Yes.””
Laura's voice shook.
“It was a security camera Michael had installed himself. He told me it was for the hospital's protection, but I found out later that it recorded conversations as well.””
“Where is it?”” Daniel asked.
“Michael kept the recording in a private archive. He showed it to me once, years ago, when he was trying to convince me to stop asking questions.””
I stepped closer.
“What was on it?””
Laura looked at me.
“Elena told him that Thomas Ward was your biological father. She also told him that she had proof Michael was stealing from the company.””
“What did he do?””
“He demanded that she sign the trust documents over to him. She refused.””
My stomach tightened.
“And then?””
Laura began crying.
“He told her that if she wouldn't sign, she would never see you again.””
I looked at Nora.
“Can you get the recording?””
She shook her head.
“Not without a warrant. Michael has moved the archive several times. But if we can establish that the footage exists, we can ask the court to compel him to produce it.””
Daniel straightened.
“Then we do that.””
Nora nodded.
“I'll contact the district attorney. The emails, the trust documents, and the hospital records should be enough to justify an investigation.””
My phone rang.
The screen showed Dad's name.
I answered.
“Emily.””
His voice was calm, almost affectionate.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere you can't control.””
He sighed.
“I understand you're upset. I know you've been hearing terrible things about me.””
“Are they true?””
“Some of them are misunderstandings. Others are outright lies.””
“Did you threaten Elena?””
Silence.
Then he said, “Your mother was a troubled woman. She was convinced everyone wanted to take her child.””
“Did you threaten to keep me from her?””
“I did what I thought was necessary.””
“Did you change her medication?””
His breathing changed.
“Who told you that?””
“Answer the question.””
“I never touched her medication.””
“Then why did you enter her hospital room?””
He was silent for several seconds.
Finally, he said, “Because Elena was dying, and she wanted to see me.””
I looked at Nora.
She shook her head slightly, urging me to keep him talking.
“What did she say?””
“She told me things I didn't want to hear.””
“Like what?””
“That Thomas Ward was your father.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did you kill her?””
“No.””
His answer came so quickly that I almost believed him.
Then he continued.
“But if I had known what that woman was going to do to my family, I would have stopped her by any means necessary.””
My blood turned cold.
“That's not a denial.””
“It's the truth.””
I heard a door close on his end of the call.
Then Dad lowered his voice.
“Emily, I know about the safe-deposit box. I know you have Elena's letters. And I know you've been speaking to Nora Bennett.””
I looked at the detective.
Her face had gone rigid.
“How do you know that?””
“Because Nora and I have been in contact for seventeen years.””
Nora closed her eyes.
Dad continued.
“She was supposed to make sure the evidence disappeared. She failed. Franklin Ward failed.
Laura failed. And now Daniel has dragged you into a mess that should have been buried a long time ago.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Why are you telling me this?””
“Because I want to give you one last chance to come home.””
“I am home.””
“Not with Daniel.””
He paused.
“Tomorrow morning, the court will hear my guardianship petition. If you testify that Daniel manipulated you, I'll withdraw the petition and allow you to return to your normal life.””
“And if I refuse?””
“Then I'll present evidence that Daniel has been lying about his identity, his relationship with Elena, and his involvement in her death.””
I glanced at Daniel.
He looked devastated, but he nodded for me to continue.
“You can't make me lie.””
“I'm not asking you to lie. I'm asking you to tell the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That Daniel has spent seventeen years pretending to be your father while hiding the fact that he isn't.””
I closed my eyes.
Dad's voice softened.
“I know you think I'm the villain in this story. But I'm the only person who has consistently been there for you.””
“You stole me.””
“I raised you.””
“You lied to me.””
“I protected you.””
“You tried to take my inheritance.””
“I protected the family business.””
I felt something inside me harden.
“You don't get to call greed protection anymore.””
For the first time, he sounded angry.
“Be careful, Emily. You have no idea what you're risking.””
“Neither did Elena.””
I ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Nora's phone rang.
She answered, listened briefly, and went pale.
When she ended the call, she looked at us.
“The district attorney has received a new piece of evidence.””
“What evidence?”” Daniel asked.
“A recording from the hospital archive. Someone anonymously submitted it an hour ago.””
I felt my heart begin to pound.
“Does it show what happened to Elena?””
Nora nodded slowly.
“It shows the final eleven minutes.””
“Who submitted it?””
She looked at me.
“The message came with a note.””
She turned the phone toward us.
The note contained a single sentence.
*Michael Carter didn't kill Elena Hayes. Laura Carter did.*
I stared at my mother.
Laura's face drained of color.
“No,” she whispered.
Nora looked between us.
“There's more.””
She read the second sentence aloud.
*And if you want to know why, ask what happened to Thomas Ward's other child.*
My mother staggered backward.
Daniel caught her arm.
I looked at Laura.
“Thomas had another child?””
She began shaking her head.
“No. No, that can't be right.””
“Mom, who was Thomas Ward's other child?””
She stared at me with an expression of absolute terror.
May you like
Then she whispered a name.
“Michael Carter.””
