Chapter 9: The Brother They Buried

“Ethan.””
Adrian said the name like it was a confession.
The young man standing at the end of the alley didn't blink.
Rain ran down his face.
His gun remained pointed at Adrian.
Julian stood several feet behind him, one hand pressed against his ribs, breathing hard.
I stared at the stranger who looked so much like me that my mind refused to accept what my eyes were telling it.
Same dark eyes.
Same narrow nose.
Same small crease beside the left side of the mouth.
It was like looking at a version of myself from another life.
“You're my brother,” I whispered.
Ethan's gaze shifted to me.
“Yes.””
My voice broke.
“Are you?””
He lowered the gun by an inch.
“You tell me.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Ethan, this isn't how I wanted you to meet her.””
A bitter smile crossed Ethan's face.
“You didn't want us to meet at all.””
I looked at Adrian.
“You knew he was alive.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew he was my brother.””
“Yes.””
I took a step toward him.
“How long?””
Adrian swallowed.
“Since the beginning.””
The words struck harder than the rain.
“All these years…”
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice rose.
“Protect me from what?””
Ethan answered.
“From me.””
Silence.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He laughed without humor.
“Because your family spent twenty-nine years deciding which one of us was worth saving.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan walked closer.
Marcus lifted his weapon.
Ethan glanced at him.
“Tell your friend to lower that.””
“No,” Marcus said.
Ethan's eyes returned to me.
“Fair.””
He lowered his gun completely.
“I didn't come here to kill you.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because tonight is the last night they're going to lie to you.””
Julian suddenly laughed.
It was a weak, broken sound.
“You have no idea what you've walked into.””
Ethan turned toward him.
“I know exactly what I've walked into.””
Julian wiped blood from his mouth.
“Victoria told you everything?””
“She told me enough.””
I looked at him.
“Julian, what happened at the gala?””
He stared at me for several seconds.
Then said,
“I found the original contract.””
“What contract?””
“The one Victoria wanted.””
“Why?””
“She thought it would let her control the trust.””
Ethan shook his head.
“She was wrong.””
Julian looked at him.
“You're the reason she was wrong.””
Ethan didn't deny it.
I stepped closer.
“Start at the beginning.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan said,
“Our mother was Eleanor Vale.””
I froze.
My mother.
“She had two children.””
He pointed at himself.
“Me.””
Then at me.
“You.””
“My mother had twins?””
“She gave birth to us two years apart.””
I frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It doesn't have to,” Ethan said.
“Because one of us was hidden.””
He looked at Adrian.
“Which one?””
Ethan's expression hardened.
“Me.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“You were taken,” he said.
“Taken?””
“When you were six months old.””
My heart stopped.
“By whom?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Victor.””
The man who had spent decades hiding behind another man's identity.
“My mother let him?””
“No.””
Adrian's voice was quiet.
“She fought him.””
“Then why did he take you?””
“Because he believed you were the heir.””
I stared.
“And you weren't?””
Ethan laughed.
“That depends on what you call inheritance.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Clara inherited the trust.””
Ethan nodded.
“I inherited the proof.””
My pulse quickened.
“The Vale Archive.””
“Yes.””
I suddenly understood.
“The archive wasn't in the trust.””
“No.””
“You had it.””
“I still do.””
Mara looked at him.
“Where?””
Ethan smiled.
“Somewhere Victor can never reach.””
Julian leaned against the wall.
“So that's what all of this was about.””
I turned toward him.
“Explain.””
He looked exhausted.
“Victoria told me the archive contained evidence about financial crimes committed by several major families.””
“So?””
“So she said whoever controlled it could blackmail half of Manhattan.””
I stared at him.
“And you believed her.””
“She showed me enough proof.””
“You helped her.””
“I didn't know who she really was.””
“You slept with her.””
His face tightened.
“That wasn't the only thing she lied about.””
I walked closer.
“What else?””
Julian looked away.
“She told me you were planning to have me removed from the company.””
“You were.””
“I know that now.””
“She convinced you first.””
“She told me you were hiding assets from me.””
I almost laughed.
“You mean the assets I owned before I met you?””
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“I know.””
For the first time, I saw something besides arrogance in his eyes.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Then why did you take her to the gala?””
He swallowed.
“Because she said it was the only way to save the company.””
I shook my head.
“You never asked me.””
“No.””
“You never checked.””
“No.””
“You just believed her.””
“Yes.””
Julian's shoulders dropped.
“And tonight I realized she had never cared about me.””
I said nothing.
He looked at Ethan.
“She was using me to get close to Clara.””
“She was using everyone,” Ethan said.
A black SUV screeched to a stop behind us.
Everyone turned.
Two men stepped out.
Neither wore uniforms.
Marcus raised his weapon.
“Inside.””
Adrian moved immediately.
“There's a tunnel under the storefront.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because they'll follow.””
“Then what do you suggest?””
Ethan looked at me.
“We go to Hawthorne.””
I stared.
“You said Victor can't reach the archive.””
“He can't.””
“Then why go there?””
“Because the last key is still inside.””
My fingers went cold.
“What key?””
Ethan looked at my necklace.
I touched it unconsciously.
A small gold pendant my mother had given me when I was eighteen.
I had worn it almost every day since.
Ethan pointed toward it.
“That key.””
I pulled it free.
“This?””
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I watched her give it to you.””
I stared at him.
“You knew my mother.””
“When I was little.””
“What happened to her?””
Ethan's expression changed.
“She died believing you were safe.””
A gunshot cracked through the alley.
Concrete exploded beside us.
Marcus shouted.
“Move!””
We ran.
The old storefront door slammed open.
Adrian shoved me through first.
Ethan followed.
Julian stumbled behind us.
Marcus stayed last, firing one warning shot toward the alley.
We descended a narrow service staircase.
At the bottom, Ethan pulled aside a rusted panel.
A second tunnel appeared.
I grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
He turned.
“You said my mother believed I was safe.””
“Yes.””
“Did she know Richard wasn't my biological father?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know Adrian was?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Then why did she let Richard raise me?””
Adrian answered softly.
“Because Richard would have died protecting you.””
“And you wouldn't?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I already had.””
I didn't understand.
“What?””
“I had to let you believe I was dead.””
“Why?””
“Because Victor would have killed you if he knew I was still alive.””
Ethan spoke quietly.
“And he nearly did anyway.””
We kept moving.
Minutes later, the tunnel opened beneath Hawthorne Bank.
We climbed into the old vault.
The broken safe still stood open.
The red ledger was on the table.
Daniel grabbed it.
“You found the archive.””
Ethan nodded.
“Part of it.””
I looked at him.
“Where's the rest?””
He reached into his coat.
A small black drive sat in his palm.
“Here.””
Daniel stared.
“That's impossible.””
Ethan smiled.
“That's what everyone says.””
He handed it to me.
“What is it?””
“Everything your father wanted you to know.””
I connected it to the old computer terminal in the vault.
Folders began appearing.
Names.
Accounts.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Then one folder stood out.
*PROJECT VALE — ORIGINAL SUBJECT*
My hands froze.
“Original subject?””
Ethan stood beside me.
“Open it.””
I did.
A scanned laboratory report appeared.
My mother's name.
My birth date.
And beneath it—
*CLARA VALE — SUBJECT B*
My blood ran cold.
I opened the next file.
*ETHAN VALE — SUBJECT A*
I looked at him.
“What is this?””
He didn't answer.
The next document loaded.
A private medical contract.
Twenty-nine years old.
Signed by a man whose name I had never seen.
Dr. Nathaniel Voss.
My eyes moved downward.
*Objective: establish hereditary compatibility for transfer of the Vale controlling estate.*
I whispered,
“They tested us.””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Ethan's expression was grim.
“To determine which child could legally inherit.””
My stomach turned.
“And who paid for it?””
I scrolled.
The name appeared.
*Victor Sterling.*
Then another name.
*Richard Hart.*
And a third.
*Evelyn Hart.*
I looked at Evelyn's name.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“She knew about us.””
“Yes.””
“She knew Victor took you.””
“Yes.””
“And she still let Julian marry me.””
Ethan's face hardened.
“She thought Julian could be controlled.””
I stared at the screen.
“What happens now?””
Daniel looked at the files.
“Now we have enough evidence to destroy everyone involved.””
A phone rang.
Julian's.
He looked at the screen.
Victoria.
He answered on speaker.
Her voice came through immediately.
“Julian, where are you?””
He said nothing.
“Julian?””
Then I stepped closer to the phone.
“Looking for me?””
Victoria went silent.
Then she laughed softly.
“You opened it.””
“Yes.””
“You finally know.””
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere you can't reach.””
“Try me.””
“Clara.””
Her voice became almost gentle.
“You still don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
“I never wanted your company.””
“Then what do you want?””
A pause.
“I want my father.””
I froze.
“Victor?””
“No.””
She whispered,
“The man who stole his name.””
I looked at Ethan.
Victoria continued.
“Because that man is not just his accomplice.””
Her voice dropped.
“He is the reason your mother died.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Who?””
Victoria gave a quiet laugh.
“You still haven't figured it out.””
I looked at Adrian.
He was staring at the floor.
Something inside me cracked.
“Adrian?””
He slowly raised his eyes.
Victoria spoke one final sentence.
“Ask your father what he did the night Eleanor died.””
The call disconnected.
I turned to Adrian.
“You said she was killed by Victor.””
Adrian didn't answer.
“Adrian.””
He looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
“I was there.””
My heart pounded.
“Did you kill her?””
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
Adrian's face collapsed.
“I tried to save her.””
“From whom?””
He looked at the screen.
At Project Vale.
At the names of all the people who had controlled our lives before we were old enough to speak.
Then he whispered,
“From Richard.””
I stopped breathing.
Because Richard Hart had raised me.
Loved me.
Protected me.
May you like
And according to the man standing before me—
he had been the one who wanted my mother dead.
