Chapter 8: The Man Who Called Me Daughter

“Hello, daughter.””

The voice came from somewhere beyond the darkness.

A gun clicked.

Marcus moved first.

He shoved me down as a shot cracked through the vault.

The bullet struck the metal safe behind us with a deafening clang.

“Down!”” Marcus shouted.

Daniel hit the emergency switch.

Nothing.

The vault remained black.

I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Unhurried.

Someone was walking toward us.

“Marcus,” I whispered.

“I've got you.””

Another shot exploded.

A spark flashed against the wall.

Then emergency lights flickered on.

A man stood at the other end of the vault.

Tall.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

A scar curved from beneath his left ear to the edge of his jaw.

He held a handgun loosely at his side.

I stared at him.

He stared back.

And somehow, despite never seeing his face before, something inside me recognized him.

Not his features.

Not his voice.

Something deeper.

A familiarity I had spent my entire life unable to name.

“Adrian?”” I whispered.

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

“Your father told you my name.””

“My father?””

“Richard.””

He looked at the ledger.

“He finally told you.””

I stood slowly.

Marcus raised his weapon.

“Drop the gun.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Do you really think I'm here to kill her?””

“You fired at us.””

“I fired at the safe.””

“You could have hit Clara.””

“I knew exactly where the shot would land.””

Marcus didn't lower his weapon.

Adrian's eyes returned to me.

“I've been trying to get you away from Julian for years.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You could have started by introducing yourself.””

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor was watching.””

I thought of the photograph.

Victor Sterling.

Or the man pretending to be him.

“You know who he is.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Adrian's face hardened.

“Not yet.””

I stepped closer.

“You expect me to trust you after appearing in a locked vault with a gun?””

“No.””

“Good.””

“Trust should be earned.””

He lowered the weapon.

Then placed it on the floor.

Marcus didn't move.

Adrian kicked it toward us.

“I came because Victoria made her move tonight.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she do?””

“She released the gala documents.””

“You mean the files about my father?””

“No.””

He looked directly at me.

“The files about you.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Adrian, we need to leave.””

Adrian shook his head.

“It's too late.””

The vault door suddenly shuddered.

Someone was trying to open it from the outside.

Marcus turned.

“How long?””

Daniel looked at the mechanism.

“Thirty seconds.””

Adrian moved toward the old filing cabinets.

“There is a second exit.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You opened it?””

“I installed it.””

“When?””

“Fourteen years ago.””

He pulled a hidden lever.

A section of the wall shifted.

Behind it was a narrow concrete passage.

I stared at him.

“You built this?””

“I built it for Richard.””

“Why?””

“To get you out if he failed.””

The vault door shuddered again.

A voice came through the metal.

“Clara!””

Julian.

My heart lurched.

“Julian?””

Adrian grabbed my arm.

“Don't.””

I pulled free.

“He's outside.””

“And Victoria is with him.””

The voice came again.

“Clara, open the door!””

I moved toward it.

Adrian stepped between us.

“He's not alone.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Victoria wants what is inside this room.””

I looked at the documents scattered across the table.

The ledger.

The letters.

The evidence.

“What?””

“The truth.””

The door shook again.

Julian shouted,

“Clara, please!””

I closed my eyes.

Then I remembered him standing in our kitchen.

*Stay home and finish the dishes.*

I remembered Victoria touching his chest.

Evelyn telling me I had been chosen.

And the gala screen.

*RICHARD HART DID NOT DIE BY ACCIDENT.*

I stepped away from the door.

“Let's go.””

Adrian nodded.

The passage was barely wide enough for one person.

Daniel went first.

Then Mara.

Marcus stayed behind me.

Adrian followed last.

Before entering, he looked at the vault one final time.

“You should take the ledger.””

I grabbed it.

The wall closed behind us.

Almost immediately, something heavy crashed against the other side.

Julian.

Too late.

We moved through the tunnel.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

The air smelled of rust and stone.

After several minutes, we reached a steel staircase.

Adrian climbed first.

At the top was another hidden door.

He opened it.

We emerged inside an abandoned storefront two blocks from the bank.

I stepped into the alley.

Rain struck my face.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I turned to Adrian.

“Start talking.””

He nodded.

“Your mother was nineteen when she met me.””

“You knew her?””

“I loved her.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“And Richard?””

“He loved her too.””

“So she chose him.””

“No.””

Adrian's expression was painful.

“Richard believed she chose him.””

I stared.

“She was already pregnant.””

“Yes.””

“With me.””

“Yes.””

“And Richard married her anyway.””

“He raised you as his daughter.””

“Because he loved her.””

“Because he loved you.””

I looked away.

All my life, Richard had been the father who held my bicycle steady.

The father who stayed awake when I had nightmares.

The father who taught me how to sign my name.

Blood suddenly seemed like the least important thing in the world.

“Then why hide the truth?””

“Because Victor wanted you.””

“Why?””

Adrian looked toward the street.

“Because you were his only threat.””

“I don't understand.””

“You inherited something from your mother's family.””

“What?””

“An old legal entity.””

He paused.

“Hawthorne wasn't the valuable part.””

I waited.

“The valuable part was the Vale Archive.””

I frowned.

“What is that?””

“Every transaction, every political payment, every hidden account connected to the people who financed New York's private institutions for decades.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“The archive.””

I turned.

“You knew about it?””

Daniel nodded.

“It was never stored at Hawthorne.””

“Where is it?””

Adrian answered.

“With you.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“The archive was encoded into the trust.””

My mind raced.

“The trust.””

“Yes.””

“That's why my father created it.””

“Yes.””

“To protect the archive.””

“And you.””

I opened the red ledger.

“What does it contain?””

“Enough information to destroy several billion-dollar families.””

Mara exhaled.

“And Julian?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Julian was never trying to build an empire.””

I already knew the answer.

“He was trying to unlock the archive.””

“Yes.””

“Victoria helped him.””

“She recruited him.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Julian was easy to control.””

The words hurt despite everything.

“Why me?””

Adrian looked directly into my eyes.

“Because you trusted him.””

I almost laughed.

“My trust was the weakness.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Your trust was the bait.””

A black SUV turned into the alley.

Marcus immediately drew his weapon.

Adrian looked at the vehicle.

“That's them.””

A second SUV appeared behind it.

Mara stepped back.

“How did they find us?””

Adrian answered without looking at her.

“The phone.””

I froze.

“My phone?””

“Compromised.””

I pulled it from my pocket.

It was still lit.

An active call.

I hadn't made it.

Someone was listening.

Then the screen changed.

A video started playing.

Victoria appeared.

She was sitting in a dark room.

Her gown was gone.

Her hair was wet.

There was blood on her cheek.

“Clara.””

I stared at the screen.

“You're alive.””

“Yes.””

“Where's Julian?””

Her eyes dropped.

“I tried to warn him.””

“About what?””

“That he was never in control.””

I looked at Adrian.

Victoria continued.

“Your husband thought tonight was his victory.””

She smiled sadly.

“He was wrong.””

“What happened?””

“Victor came.””

My stomach dropped.

“The real Victor?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

She looked directly into the camera.

“Your brother.””

The world seemed to stop.

I couldn't breathe.

“My… brother?””

Victoria nodded.

“You were not the only child.””

Adrian's face changed.

“You weren't supposed to know this yet.””

I spun toward him.

“You knew?””

He said nothing.

“Adrian.””

“I suspected.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“I have a brother?””

Victoria's voice came through the phone.

“Not just a brother.””

She leaned closer to the camera.

“The man who has been pretending to be Victor Sterling is your brother's father.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

“You've spent your whole life thinking you were hidden from Victor.””

A pause.

“You weren't.””

“You were hidden from your brother.””

The phone buzzed.

A new message.

*LOOK UP.*

I raised my eyes.

At the end of the alley stood Julian.

His tuxedo was soaked.

His lip was split.

One hand pressed against his ribs.

And beside him stood a young man who looked so much like me that my breath disappeared.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same dark hair.

He stared at me.

Then he smiled.

“Hello, Clara.””

Adrian went completely pale.

The young man lifted a gun toward him.

“It's been a long time, Father.””

I looked from Adrian to the stranger.

Then back again.

May you like

Adrian whispered one word.

“Ethan.””
