Chapter 5: The Secret Vanessa Buried

Daniel stood in the middle of Sophie’s empty bedroom, still holding the phone against his ear.

The call had ended.

But his daughter’s voice remained.

*“Daddy… I’m sorry.””*

Those three words repeated inside his mind.

He looked at the note again.

*I FOUND HER FIRST.*

His hands shook with anger.

Someone had taken Sophie.

Someone had entered his home.

Someone had turned the one place he promised would always be safe into a crime scene.

He grabbed his phone and immediately called the police.

But before the call connected, another message appeared.

Unknown number.

Daniel froze.

He opened it.

A picture loaded.

His heart stopped.

It was Sophie.

She was sitting on a chair in a dark room.

Her eyes were red from crying.

But she was alive.

Under the picture was a message.

*Don’t involve the police. You’ll never see her again.*

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

He typed quickly.

*Who are you?*

The response came immediately.

*Someone who knows what Claire did.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

His fingers moved.

*If you touch my daughter, I swear—*

The reply interrupted him.

*Your anger is exactly why Claire hid the truth from you.*

Daniel felt a cold wave move through him.

How did this person know Claire?

How did they know him?

How did they know Vanessa?

Another message appeared.

*Find Vanessa’s hidden file. Bring it to the old warehouse on Harbor Street. Midnight.*

Daniel looked at the clock.

Ten hours.

Too long.

But he had no choice.

His daughter’s life mattered more than anything.

He placed the phone down and forced himself to think.

The person who took Sophie wanted something from Vanessa.

A secret file.

Something Vanessa had hidden.

Something connected to Claire.

Daniel walked downstairs and searched the house again.

Not randomly this time.

Carefully.

He opened every drawer.

Every cabinet.

Every place Vanessa had touched.

Then he remembered.

The night before the wedding, Vanessa had been unusually nervous.

She had spent hours in the study.

She said she was writing vows.

Daniel had believed her.

Now he walked into the study.

The room smelled faintly like Vanessa’s perfume.

He opened the desk drawer.

Nothing.

He checked the shelves.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something strange.

A small scratch beneath the wooden cabinet.

Daniel pushed it.

The cabinet moved slightly.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

His stomach tightened.

Inside was a black folder.

No name.

No label.

Just a single word written across the front.

*CLAIRE.*

Daniel opened it.

The first page was a photograph.

Claire.

Standing outside a building he didn’t recognize.

The second page was a document.

Daniel read the title.

*PRIVATE INVESTIGATION REPORT.*

His eyes moved quickly.

The report was dated six months before Claire’s death.

Someone had been following her.

Someone had been tracking her movements.

Someone had taken pictures of her meetings.

Daniel turned the page.

Then he saw the name.

The person Claire had been meeting.

His breath caught.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It was Michael Reed.

The man who called him.

Daniel kept reading.

The report said Claire had discovered financial activity connected to Vanessa.

Large transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Unknown companies.

Daniel felt sick.

Vanessa wasn’t just hiding feelings.

She was hiding money.

But why?

He turned another page.

Then another.

Until he found the final document.

A medical record.

Claire’s name.

An accident report.

Daniel read the first line.

Then stopped.

Because it said:

*Vehicle failure suspected. Investigation ongoing.*

His hands went cold.

The accident wasn’t confirmed as an accident.

Someone had investigated.

Someone had suspected something.

And Vanessa had known.

A sound came from behind him.

Daniel turned quickly.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Daniel slowly held up the folder.

“You knew.””

Vanessa looked at it.

The fear in her eyes confirmed everything.

“Daniel…”

“You knew Claire was investigating you.””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew her car might have been sabotaged.””

“Listen to me.””

“You knew my wife didn’t just die.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I can explain.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You always say that.””

“Because I can.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You can’t explain why my daughter is missing.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

“Sophie was taken.””

The color drained from her face.

“What are you talking about?””

“Someone took her.””

Vanessa looked genuinely shocked.

And Daniel hated that part of him still noticed.

Because for one second, she looked like she cared.

“Who?””

“You tell me.””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

Daniel threw the folder onto the desk.

“This is your file.””

Vanessa looked down.

Then slowly closed her eyes.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

Her voice became quieter.

“Three years ago, Claire found out things about me.””

Daniel stared.

“What things?””

She swallowed.

“My father.””

Daniel frowned.

“What about him?””

“He was involved with people he shouldn’t have been involved with.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“My family has enemies.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Don’t make yourself a victim.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

But Daniel didn’t care anymore.

“Claire found something about you. She tried to tell me. Then she disappeared.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

The answer shocked him.

“You admit it?””

“I admit she was in danger.””

“Because of you?””

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“Because of the people who were after my family.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why did you lie?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That if you knew the truth, you would leave.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You mean if I knew who you really were.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

For the first time, she looked broken.

“I loved you.””

Daniel felt nothing.

“Did you love Sophie?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No answer came.

That silence was enough.

Daniel picked up the folder.

“Where is Claire?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I swear.””

“Then why did she warn me about you?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“She called you?””

Daniel stopped.

“How do you know that?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew she contacted me.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Daniel, please.””

But he was done.

“You weren’t trying to marry me.””

Her eyes filled.

“You’re wrong.””

“You were trying to get close to Claire’s secrets.””

“No.””

“You used my daughter.””

Vanessa flinched.

That hurt more than any accusation.

Because it was true.

Daniel turned away.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Both of them looked at it.

Daniel answered.

“Where is my daughter?””

A man’s voice replied.

“You found the file.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?””

“Someone who knows Vanessa better than you ever did.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“What do you want?””

“The truth.””

“You kidnapped my daughter for information?””

The man laughed.

“No.””

A pause.

“I took your daughter because Claire trusted you with the truth.””

Daniel’s heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

The voice lowered.

“It means Sophie knows something you don’t.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“She was there the night Claire disappeared.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at the photograph of Claire.

His mind went blank.

“Sophie was seven years old.””

“Yes.””

The man whispered.

“And children remember things adults try to erase.””

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Let me speak to her.””

A few seconds passed.

Then he heard it.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

His eyes closed.

“Sophie.””

“I’m okay.””

“Where are you?””

“I don’t know.””

“Listen to me. Stay calm. Daddy is coming.””

A pause.

Then Sophie whispered something that made Daniel’s blood run cold.

“Daddy…”

“Yes?””

“I remember Mommy crying that night.””

Daniel froze.

“She said Vanessa wasn’t the person we thought she was.””

The call went silent.

The man returned.

“Midnight.””

Then he added:

“Come alone.””

The line disconnected.

Daniel stood there, unable to move.

Because for three years, he believed Sophie lost her mother.

Now he realized something much worse.

May you like

Sophie might have been the only witness to what really happened.

And someone had taken her because she finally remembered.
