Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Photograph
Daniel stared at the photograph in his hand.
For several seconds, he couldn’t understand what he was seeing.
The image was old.
The edges were worn.
It showed Sophie standing in a park, smiling as she held a small stuffed rabbit against her chest.
But she wasn’t alone.
A woman stood beside her.
A woman Daniel knew.
A woman he never expected to see again.
His fingers went numb.
Because the woman in the photograph was Claire Morgan.
Sophie’s mother.
His wife.
The woman who had died three years ago.
Daniel looked from the photograph to Sophie.
Then back again.
His mind struggled to connect the impossible.
Claire was gone.
So how could she be in a picture that Vanessa had just used against their daughter?
“Sophie,” Daniel whispered.
The little girl looked terrified.
“Daddy…”
His voice softened immediately.
“Where did you get this?””
Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t take it.””
“I didn’t say you did.””
Daniel crouched down.
“Sweetheart, I just need to understand.””
Before Sophie could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.
The confidence had returned to her face.
“Daniel, maybe now you’ll listen.””
He stood slowly.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You think I’m the villain because of one note, but you don’t know the whole story.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“You know something about this?””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“I know more than you think.””
The hallway became painfully quiet.
Guests had started gathering near the ballroom entrance. Some pretended not to watch, while others openly stared.
Daniel didn’t care.
Not anymore.
“Explain,” he said.
Vanessa glanced at Sophie.
“Not in front of her.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“No. Whatever you have to say, you say it here.””
Vanessa sighed.
“You really want to do this?””
“Yes.””
She looked at Sophie.
“Fine.””
Sophie immediately grabbed Daniel’s hand tighter.
“Daddy, I don’t want to go with her.””
Daniel looked down.
“You’re not going anywhere.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“See? This is exactly the problem.””
Daniel looked up.
“What problem?””
“She controls you.””
The words hit him harder than he expected.
Not because they were true.
Because Vanessa believed them.
“She’s seven years old,” Daniel said.
“And she knows exactly how to get what she wants.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You’re blaming a child?””
“I’m telling you what you refuse to see.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“That photograph proves it.””
Daniel looked at the picture again.
“Proves what?””
“That Claire was hiding things from you.””
The mention of his late wife made him freeze.
Nobody spoke about Claire casually.
Not after what happened.
Not after the accident.
Not after the hospital called him at two in the morning.
Not after he held her hand while doctors told him there was nothing more they could do.
Vanessa knew that.
She knew exactly where his pain lived.
And now she was reaching into it.
“What did you just say?”” Daniel asked quietly.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Your wife had secrets.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
She pointed at the photograph.
“Why was Claire meeting someone behind your back?””
Daniel looked down.
The picture showed Claire smiling beside Sophie.
But in the background, barely visible, was another figure.
A man.
Standing near a car.
Daniel zoomed his eyes toward the image.
He hadn’t noticed him before.
The man was blurry.
But familiar.
A cold feeling moved through Daniel.
Because the car parked behind them belonged to him.
His old black sedan.
The one Claire had driven before she died.
“How did you get this?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
Only briefly.
But Daniel noticed.
“Answer me.””
“I found it.””
“Where?””
“Among Claire’s things.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because I packed everything.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“No. You packed what you wanted to remember.””
Daniel felt his anger rising.
“You went through Claire’s belongings?””
“I was trying to understand your family.””
“My family?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked at Sophie.
“And I found out there were things nobody wanted to tell you.””
Sophie suddenly spoke.
“She’s lying.””
Everyone looked at the little girl.
Daniel knelt beside her.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
Sophie wiped her cheeks.
“She found Mommy’s box.””
Daniel froze.
“What box?””
Sophie looked frightened.
“The one in the closet.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Daniel saw it.
“You know about a box?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel stood.
“What box?””
Sophie looked down.
“Mommy told me not to open it.””
The hallway became silent.
Daniel felt like the ground beneath him had shifted.
Claire had left many things behind.
Clothes.
Photos.
Letters.
Memories.
But never a secret box.
At least, not one he knew about.
“Where is it?”” he asked.
Sophie looked toward Vanessa.
“She took it.””
Daniel turned slowly.
“Vanessa.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She doesn’t understand.””
“Where is the box?””
“Daniel—”
“WHERE IS IT?””
The entire hallway went silent.
Vanessa looked around at the guests watching.
Then she whispered.
“At home.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You brought something belonging to my dead wife into our home?””
“I was trying to help.””
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You were looking for something.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Careful.””
“Why?””
“Because you might not like what you find.””
Daniel felt his heart pounding.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward Sophie.
Then back at him.
“It means your perfect little family wasn’t as perfect as you thought.””
Sophie began crying again.
Daniel immediately moved closer to her.
But Vanessa’s words stayed in his head.
Because part of him hated that they worked.
Not because he believed Vanessa.
Because Claire had been keeping something from him.
And that scared him more than anything.
Later that evening, the wedding venue emptied slowly.
The guests left with questions they would repeat for weeks.
The flowers remained.
The cake remained untouched.
The decorations stayed exactly as planned.
Everything looked ready for a wedding that would never happen.
Daniel sat in his car outside the ballroom with Sophie beside him.
Neither of them spoke for several minutes.
Finally, Sophie whispered.
“Are you mad at me?””
Daniel immediately turned.
“What?””
“Because of the wedding.””
His heart broke.
“Sophie, look at me.””
She looked up.
“You did nothing wrong.””
“But Vanessa said—”
“I don’t care what she said.””
Daniel reached over and held her hand.
“You are not a problem. You are not a burden. You are my daughter.””
Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
“Promise?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I promise.””
For a moment, the fear in her eyes disappeared.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
But something made him answer.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a woman’s voice.
A voice he hadn’t heard in three years.
A voice that made his entire body go still.
“Daniel?””
He stopped breathing.
“Sophie?””
The woman on the phone sounded nervous.
“I know this sounds impossible…”
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then the words came.
“I’m sorry I disappeared.””
Daniel stood frozen.
Because he knew that voice.
Everyone would recognize it.
Even after three years.
Even after believing she was gone forever.
“Claire?””
Beside him, Sophie gasped.
“Mommy?””
The line went silent.
Then the woman whispered:
“Daniel, you need to take Sophie and leave Vanessa immediately.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?””
The woman’s voice trembled.
“Because she knows I’m alive.””
The call suddenly ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
His hands shaking.
May you like
And for the first time since Claire’s death, he wondered if the biggest lie of his life wasn’t Vanessa’s love.
It was the belief that his wife had died.
