Chapter 8: The Voice on the Recording
The following morning, the Whitmore estate was surrounded by federal agents.
News vans lined the road outside the stone entrance.
Reporters shouted questions.
Photographers captured images of every vehicle entering the property.
By sunrise, the story had spread across national media.
*BILLIONAIRE'S WEDDING ABRUPTLY CANCELED AFTER ALLEGED MEDICAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION.*
*FIANCÉE AND FAMILY EXECUTIVE ARRESTED IN SHOCKING CONSPIRACY.*
But Ethan wasn't watching the news.
He was sitting in his private study, staring at a small silver flash drive.
Maya was safe in the guest bedroom with Margaret.
James had arranged round-the-clock protection.
Sophia, Richard, and Marcus were being questioned separately.
The flash drive was the remaining mystery.
And Richard's final words wouldn't leave Ethan's mind.
The person who ordered your accident wasn't me.
At 8:15 a.m., Special Agent Laura Bennett entered the study.
She was in her early forties, with dark hair tied back and a calm, observant expression.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Ethan looked up.
“Agent Bennett.””
She placed a folder on the desk.
“We've reviewed the documents recovered from the factory. There's enough evidence to pursue several charges, including conspiracy, financial fraud, unlawful administration of medication, and attempted murder.””
“Good.””
“But we need to establish the full chain of responsibility.””
Ethan pushed the flash drive toward her.
“Maya found this.””
The agent examined it.
“Has anyone accessed it?””
“No.””
“Good. We'll create a forensic copy before opening the contents.””
Ethan nodded.
Agent Bennett opened her folder.
“There is something else. Richard has requested legal representation, but he's also offered to cooperate.””
“Why?””
“He claims someone above him organized the accident.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Who?””
“He hasn't identified the person yet.””
“Did he explain why?””
“He says he wants protection.””
Ethan gave a humorless laugh.
“Richard Whitmore is afraid?””
“Apparently.””
The agent studied him.
“Did he mention anyone in your family?””
Ethan went still.
“My family?””
“Your father had several business partners. One of them was reportedly involved in the original investigation.””
Ethan thought of Marcus Hale.
“Marcus?””
“He's refusing to speak.””
“Then ask Richard.””
“We are.””
Agent Bennett closed the folder.
“I'll have our digital forensics team examine the drive. In the meantime, I recommend that you avoid direct contact with anyone connected to the investigation.””
Ethan looked toward the window.
“I think we've passed that point.””
At 10:40 a.m., Margaret entered the study.
She looked exhausted.
Her hands trembled slightly as she carried a cup of tea.
“Mr. Whitmore?””
Ethan turned.
“Margaret. Please sit down.””
She placed the tea on the desk.
“I wanted to thank you.””
“For what?””
“For saving Maya.””
Ethan shook his head.
“She saved me first.””
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“I should have told you everything years ago.””
“Why didn't you?””
She looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
Ethan waited.
Margaret slowly began speaking.
“The night of your accident, my sister was working in the emergency department. She called me because she knew you had been brought in.””
Ethan nodded.
“You told me that.””
“But there's something I didn't tell you.””
“What?””
Margaret took a breath.
“Your father came to the hospital that night.””
Ethan frowned.
“My father died five years before the accident.””
Margaret looked startled.
Then she realized what she had said.
“I'm sorry, sir. I mean your uncle. Richard.””
Ethan watched her carefully.
“Go on.””
“He came into your room after the surgery. I was cleaning the corridor. I saw him speaking with someone.””
“Who?””
“A woman.””
“Did you recognize her?””
Margaret shook her head.
“No. But she was wearing a hospital uniform.””
“Was she a nurse?””
“I thought so. But she wasn't on the staff list.””
Ethan leaned forward.
“What happened?””
“They argued. I couldn't hear everything, but I heard Richard say, ‘The boy was supposed to be finished tonight.’”
Ethan felt cold.
Margaret continued.
“The woman replied, ‘That's not what we agreed.’ Then she handed him a small envelope.””
“What was inside?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you see her again?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“Yesterday.””
Ethan stared at her.
“Where?””
“At the wedding.””
His breathing changed.
“Who was she?””
Margaret looked toward the door.
“Your aunt.””
Ethan went completely still.
His father's younger sister.
Eleanor Whitmore.
A woman who had lived in London for nearly twenty years.
A woman who rarely attended family gatherings.
A woman who had sent Ethan a sympathy card after his accident.
He hadn't seen her in person since his father's funeral.
“Are you certain?””
Margaret nodded.
“I recognized her face immediately. She was standing near the entrance with Richard before the ceremony.””
Ethan stared at the desk.
“Did she see you?””
“I think so.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she looked at me and smiled.””
Margaret began crying.
“It was the same smile she gave me at the hospital.””
Ethan pressed his fingers against his forehead.
The conspiracy had just become much larger.
“James!””
His security chief appeared.
“Sir?””
“Find Eleanor Whitmore.””
James nodded.
“Do you have an address?””
“London. I want to know whether she returned to England after the wedding was canceled.””
James immediately left.
Margaret stood.
“Mr. Whitmore, there's something else.””
Ethan looked up.
“What?””
“My sister kept a diary.””
“Your sister?””
“The nurse who worked at St. Andrew's. She wrote down everything she saw that night. Before she died, she gave me the diary.””
Ethan's expression softened.
“Where is it?””
Margaret reached into her handbag and removed a small, worn notebook.
“I kept it because I was afraid someone would come looking for it.””
She placed it on the desk.
Ethan opened the first page.
The handwriting was faded.
He turned several pages.
Then he stopped.
A name appeared repeatedly.
*DR. HELEN MORROW.*
Ethan looked up.
“Who is she?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I don't know. But my sister wrote that she was the woman who administered the second injection.””
Ethan looked down again.
Beside the name was a note.
Not hospital staff. Arrived with private authorization from Eleanor Whitmore.
He closed the diary.
Agent Bennett returned shortly afterward.
Ethan handed her the notebook.
“We have another name.””
She examined the entry.
“Dr. Helen Morrow.””
“Yes.””
The agent looked at him.
“Do you recognize it?””
“No.””
Agent Bennett took out her phone.
“I'll run the name through our records.””
She stepped toward the window and made a call.
A few minutes later, she returned.
Her expression had changed.
“Mr. Whitmore, this is interesting.””
“What?””
“Dr. Helen Morrow was a licensed neurologist. She worked in private pharmaceutical research before losing her medical license four years ago.””
“Why?””
“Unauthorized clinical trials. Falsification of medical data. Several patients reported unexplained neurological complications.””
Ethan felt his stomach tighten.
“Where is she now?””
“Officially, she disappeared three years ago.””
“Unofficially?””
Agent Bennett opened another document.
“She has been living under a different name in London.””
Ethan looked toward the window.
“Eleanor.””
“Possibly.””
Agent Bennett received a notification on her phone.
She read it.
Then she looked at Ethan.
“We've recovered the contents of the flash drive.””
Ethan's heart began beating faster.
“What did you find?””
“Several audio files, financial records, and a video.””
“Play it.””
The agent hesitated.
“Mr. Whitmore, some of the material is disturbing.””
“Play it.””
She connected her laptop to the study's screen.
A video appeared.
The date was three years earlier.
The location was a private office inside Whitmore Global.
Richard was standing near a desk.
Marcus Hale sat opposite him.
And a woman in a dark suit stood beside the window.
Eleanor.
Ethan leaned forward.
The audio began.
Richard's voice was clear.
“Everything is arranged. The car will be on the highway by nine.””
Marcus nodded.
“And the boy?””
Eleanor turned.
“Ethan must survive.””
Richard frowned.
“Why?””
“Because dead men cannot sign transfer documents.””
Ethan's stomach dropped.
The recording continued.
Marcus looked confused.
“You said we were eliminating the problem.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Not eliminating him. Removing him from the company.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Once he's incapacitated, the trust gives us control. Sophia becomes his legal caretaker. I take the board.””
“And if he recovers?””
Eleanor smiled.
“Then Dr. Morrow will make sure he doesn't.””
The screen went dark.
Ethan couldn't move.
Agent Bennett paused the recording.
“There's more.””
She opened a second audio file.
This one was dated six weeks after the accident.
Sophia's voice came through.
“His legs are responding.””
Eleanor answered calmly.
“Then increase the dosage.””
Sophia hesitated.
“Won't that kill him?””
Eleanor laughed.
“Not if it's done correctly.””
Richard's voice followed.
“And the wedding?””
“Let her marry him,” Eleanor replied.
“The legal transfer will be easier once she's his wife.””
Ethan stared at the screen.
For several seconds, he couldn't breathe.
His aunt had ordered the accident.
Sophia had agreed to marry him as part of the arrangement.
Richard had helped execute it.
And the doctor had been used to maintain the deception.
But the final part of the recording was worse.
Eleanor's voice became quiet.
“There's one person we still need to deal with.””
Richard asked, “Who?””
Eleanor answered:
“Olivia.””
Ethan immediately stood in his wheelchair.
“What?””
Agent Bennett stopped the recording.
“What is it?””
“My sister.””
He grabbed his phone.
He called Olivia.
No answer.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Then a message arrived.
It was from Olivia's number.
Ethan, don't come home. I know who ordered the accident. I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner.
Ethan read the message.
Then another appeared.
I'm at the place where Dad kept his old letters. There's something you need to see.
Agent Bennett immediately stepped forward.
“Don't respond.””
Ethan looked at her.
“That's my sister.””
“We don't know who's holding her phone.””
He called Olivia again.
This time, someone answered.
But it wasn't Olivia.
A woman's voice came through.
“Hello, Ethan.””
He recognized it instantly.
Eleanor.
His aunt laughed softly.
“It's been a long time, sweetheart.””
Ethan gripped the phone.
“Where is my sister?””
“Safe. For the moment.””
“Let her go.””
“Of course. But first, I need something.””
“What?””
“The original trust documents.””
Ethan looked at Agent Bennett.
His aunt continued.
“And bring the little girl.””
Ethan's blood turned cold.
“Maya has nothing to do with this.””
“Oh, Ethan. She has everything to do with it.””
A pause.
Then Eleanor spoke again.
“Because she wasn't supposed to find that pill.””
The call ended.
Agent Bennett immediately contacted her team.
But Ethan was already looking toward the guest bedroom.
Maya was there.
Safe.
Protected.
At least, he had believed she was.
A security officer rushed into the study.
“Mr. Whitmore!””
James appeared behind him.
“Sir, we have a problem.””
Ethan turned.
“What?””
James's face was pale.
“The guest bedroom is empty.””
Ethan felt his heart stop.
“Where's Maya?””
James swallowed.
“Someone used your private security access code to open the rear gate.””
Margaret screamed from the hallway.
“MAYA!””
Ethan grabbed the armrests.
And then his phone vibrated one more time.
A photograph appeared.
Maya was sitting in the back of a car.
Beside her was a woman with silver hair.
Eleanor.
May you like
Underneath the photograph were six words.
Come alone. Your family is waiting.
