Chapter 7: The Factory of Secrets

The emergency lights flickered on.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then James Carter drew his weapon.

“Everybody stay where you are!””

A nurse screamed somewhere down the corridor. Doors opened, footsteps hurried across the polished floor, and the hospital's emergency generators began humming beneath the building.

Ethan looked toward Dr. Collins.

“Who sent Richard the footage?””

“I don't know.””

“Who had access?””

“The hospital's security administrator, the medical director, and—”

A loud crash interrupted him.

One of the corridor doors swung open.

A man in a dark jacket appeared.

James immediately raised his weapon.

“Hands where I can see them!””

The man stopped.

“I'm security!””

“Show me your identification.””

The stranger slowly reached into his jacket.

James didn't lower his weapon.

“Two fingers. Slowly.””

The man produced an identification card.

James examined it.

Then his expression changed.

“Ethan, this is the hospital security supervisor.””

Ethan looked at the man.

“What happened?””

The supervisor swallowed.

“Someone accessed the surveillance system remotely. They disabled the cameras in this wing and copied the footage from Room 314.””

“Who?””

“We traced the connection to an external network.””

“Where?””

The supervisor hesitated.

“Whitmore Global's private server.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

His uncle wasn't simply hiding the truth.

He was watching every move Ethan made.

James turned to the two security officers accompanying them.

“Get the vehicle ready. We're leaving through the emergency loading entrance.””

Ethan looked toward Dr. Collins.

“Can you come with us?””

The doctor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then bring everything you have. No more hiding.””

Dr. Collins gathered the medical reports and placed them inside his briefcase.

As they moved down the corridor, Ethan's phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Sophia.

You should have stayed in your wheelchair and enjoyed your wedding.

A second message followed.

Now look what you've done.

Then came a photograph.

Maya was sitting on the same wooden chair from the video.

But this time, Margaret was beside her.

The housekeeper's hands were tied behind her back.

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

He zoomed in.

Margaret's face was bruised.

Maya was crying against her shoulder.

At the bottom of the photograph was a handwritten message.

*MIDNIGHT. NO POLICE. NO WEAPONS.*

James looked over Ethan's shoulder.

“Sir, this is a trap.””

“Of course it is.””

“We should let the authorities handle it.””

“They have my family.””

“Sir, they are using the child to control you.””

Ethan looked at the photograph again.

“Then we make sure they don't get what they want.””

The old Whitmore textile factory stood on the outskirts of Boston.

Its brick walls were stained with decades of industrial dust. Broken windows reflected the moonlight, and rusted machinery remained scattered across the enormous production floor.

The factory had been closed for twenty years.

Ethan's father had once employed more than six hundred people there.

Now it was a place where criminals could disappear without attracting attention.

At 11:47 p.m., James parked two blocks away.

“Sir, I've arranged a police perimeter.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Richard specifically said no police.””

“I know. That's why they're positioned outside the property. They're not entering unless we give the signal.””

“Good.””

James turned toward the wheelchair.

“Are you sure you want to do this?””

Ethan looked at his motionless legs.

“No.””

James waited.

“But I'm doing it anyway.””

The two men entered through a side door.

Inside, the factory smelled of damp concrete and rust.

A single overhead light illuminated the center of the production floor.

Margaret and Maya were sitting beside a large wooden table.

Both were alive.

Ethan exhaled.

Then he saw Sophia.

She stood behind Maya, holding a small pistol.

Richard was beside her.

And between them stood a man Ethan hadn't seen in three years.

Marcus Hale.

“Good evening, nephew.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You're late.””

Ethan looked at the man beside him.

“Marcus.””

Marcus smiled.

“It's been a long time.””

“You were supposed to be out of the country.””

“I was.””

“Then why are you here?””

Marcus shrugged.

“Because your uncle pays very well.””

Sophia pressed the pistol against the back of Maya's chair.

“Enough talking. Where are the files?””

Ethan looked at Margaret.

“Are you hurt?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I'm all right, sir.””

Maya looked up.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mr. Whitmore!””

Ethan wanted to reach for her.

But Sophia moved the gun closer.

“Don't.””

He stopped.

“Let them go.””

“First, the files.””

James placed a briefcase on the table.

Richard opened it.

Inside were several folders and a USB drive.

He examined them carefully.

Then he laughed.

“Very good.””

Ethan watched him.

“Now release them.””

Richard shook his head.

“You still don't understand.””

“Explain it to me.””

“Your father built an empire. A beautiful empire. But he made one enormous mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“He left it to you.””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Richard walked around the table.

“Your father believed you were the only person capable of protecting the family business. He gave you control of everything. The properties, the shares, the investment funds.””

“And you wanted them.””

“I deserved them.””

“You were his brother.””

“I was the person who kept the company alive while he played businessman.””

Richard pointed toward Ethan's wheelchair.

“Then you crashed your car, and suddenly the entire empire was left in the hands of a crippled boy who couldn't even sign his own name.””

Sophia laughed softly.

Ethan looked at her.

“Was that why you stayed?””

Sophia tilted her head.

“Initially?””

Richard glanced at her.

She continued.

“I was supposed to marry you. That was the agreement.””

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

“What agreement?””

Sophia smiled.

“Your uncle introduced us. He told me about your inheritance, your company, and the trust your father had created.””

“And you pretended to love me?””

“I didn't have to pretend forever.””

She stepped away from Maya.

“Do you know how exhausting it is to spend three years taking care of a man who can't even stand up?””

Margaret looked at her with disgust.

Sophia continued.

“I could have left. I could have found another wealthy man. But Richard promised me something better.””

Ethan looked at his uncle.

Richard answered for her.

“The Whitmore estate was supposed to be divided after your permanent incapacitation. Sophia would receive the majority of your personal holdings as your spouse. I would retain operational control of the company.””

“And the medication?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I handled the supply.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You were involved in my accident.””

Marcus smiled.

“Not directly.””

“What does that mean?””

Marcus leaned against the table.

“Your father had discovered that Richard was transferring company money into private accounts. He was preparing to remove him from the board.””

Richard's expression darkened.

Marcus continued.

“Your accident was supposed to happen on the highway that night. We knew your schedule. We knew which car you would drive. We knew you would be alone.””

Ethan stared at him.

“You arranged the crash.””

Marcus shrugged.

“The weather did most of the work.””

Margaret began crying.

Maya covered her ears.

Ethan felt rage building inside him.

“And the medication?””

Marcus smiled.

“That was insurance. You survived the crash. We needed to make sure you never recovered enough to challenge Richard.””

Sophia lifted her chin.

“The first treatment was supposed to help. But when the doctors said you might walk again, Richard became nervous.””

“So you changed the medication.””

“We made adjustments.””

“You poisoned me.””

Sophia's expression became cold.

“Call it whatever you want.””

Ethan stared at her.

Then he looked at Maya.

“Why did you let her hear you?””

Sophia laughed.

“Because I didn't think a nine-year-old would understand what she heard.””

Maya suddenly lifted her head.

“I understood.””

Sophia grabbed her shoulder.

“Be quiet!””

The girl began crying.

“I knew you were hurting him!””

Richard slammed his hand on the table.

“Enough!””

He turned toward Ethan.

“Give us the remaining documents.””

Ethan frowned.

“I gave you everything.””

“No. The original hospital footage.””

Ethan looked at James.

James remained perfectly still.

Richard noticed.

“You have it, don't you?””

Ethan didn't answer.

Richard pulled a second pistol from his jacket.

He pointed it at James.

“Put it on the table.””

James slowly reached into his coat.

Sophia's attention shifted toward him.

For one brief moment, the room became distracted.

And Maya moved.

She slid off the chair and ran toward Margaret.

Sophia spun around.

“STOP!””

A gunshot exploded through the factory.

Maya screamed.

James lunged forward.

Richard fired again.

The bullet struck a metal support beam.

The lights above them shattered.

The factory plunged into darkness.

“POLICE!”” James shouted.

Blue emergency lights flashed through the broken windows.

Sirens erupted outside.

Marcus ran toward the rear exit.

Richard grabbed Sophia's arm.

“Move!””

But Sophia didn't move.

She was staring at Maya.

The little girl had fallen beside Margaret, clutching a small object in her hand.

A tiny silver flash drive.

Ethan saw it.

So did Sophia.

“Give me that!””

Sophia rushed toward the child.

James intercepted her.

They crashed against the wooden table.

The pistol slid across the floor.

Richard tried to escape, but two officers entered through the side entrance.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPON!””

Marcus was tackled near the loading dock.

Richard dropped his pistol.

But Sophia managed to break free from James.

She reached Ethan's wheelchair and grabbed its handles.

For one terrifying second, Ethan thought she was going to push him toward the machinery.

Instead, she leaned close.

“You ruined everything.””

Ethan looked directly into her eyes.

“No, Sophia.””

He glanced at the flash drive in Maya's hand.

“You did.””

Two officers pulled Sophia away.

She screamed his name as they handcuffed her.

Margaret wrapped both arms around Maya.

Ethan looked at the child.

“Are you hurt?””

Maya shook her head.

Then she held up the flash drive.

“I found this in Mommy's pocket.””

Margaret stared at her.

“Maya, sweetheart, how did you get that?””

“The lady dropped it when she was talking to the man.””

Ethan took the drive carefully.

“What is on this?””

Maya looked toward Richard.

Then she whispered:

“It's the recording of what they did to you before the accident.””

Ethan froze.

The original accident had happened on a rainy highway.

But now a nine-year-old girl was telling him that the evidence of a crime existed before the crash.

And as the federal agents escorted Richard from the factory, his uncle turned back.

He looked at the flash drive.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Don't open it, Ethan.””

Ethan stared at him.

May you like

Richard smiled bitterly.

“Because the person who ordered your accident wasn't me.””
