Chapter 9: The Last Move

The plan was simple.

That should have worried me.

Because nothing involving Javier and Mercedes was ever simple.

Javier agreed to meet us at an underground parking garage near his mother’s neighborhood.

He said it was the only place Mercedes wouldn’t expect.

I didn’t trust him.

But I needed the documents.

Without them, I could prove the fraud happened.

But proving who planned it would be much harder.

Elena came with me.

“You know this could be a trap.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re still going?””

“Yes.””

She studied me.

“You’re not the same person who walked into that restaurant.””

I looked ahead.

“No.””

And I wasn’t.

The old Clara would have been terrified.

The old Clara would have searched for a way to keep everyone happy.

The old Clara would have asked whether exposing them was too cruel.

The new Clara only asked one question:

What happens if I don’t?

The parking garage was almost empty.

Javier stood near a concrete pillar.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

In his hands was a folder.

“The documents?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I didn’t move.

“Give them to Elena.””

He hesitated.

Then handed them over.

Elena opened the folder.

Her eyes moved quickly across the pages.

Then she looked at me.

“It’s real.””

I exhaled.

For the first time in weeks, I felt like I could breathe.

Then Javier said,

“I need your help.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His face fell.

“Clara.””

“No.””

“I’m telling the truth now.””

“You’re telling the truth because you’re trapped.””

He looked away.

And I knew I was right.

“I was scared.””

“Yes.””

“I made mistakes.””

“Yes.””

“But Mercedes…”

I interrupted.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Do not stand there and act like you had no choice.””

His eyes filled slightly.

“I loved you.””

The words hurt.

Because once, they would have meant everything.

Now they meant almost nothing.

“I loved you too.””

He looked at me.

“But you stopped choosing me.””

He looked down.

And for the first time, he had no excuse.

Then headlights appeared.

A car entered the garage.

Slowly.

Mercedes stepped out.

She wasn’t alone.

Two men followed behind her.

My body tensed.

Javier looked terrified.

“You told her.””

I turned toward him.

“I didn’t.””

Mercedes smiled.

“You always were predictable, Javier.””

He stepped back.

“You followed me?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I followed the money.””

Her eyes moved to Elena.

“Give me the documents.””

Elena didn’t move.

“No.””

Mercedes laughed.

“Do you know how many people have said no to me?””

I looked at her.

“And how many still had everything afterward?””

Her smile faded.

That was the first time I saw something behind Mercedes’ confidence.

Not anger.

Fear.

Because she knew.

The documents mattered.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“You don’t know who you’re dealing with anymore.””

For a second, nobody moved.

Then Mercedes said,

“Javier.””

He looked at her.

“Come here.””

The old Javier would have obeyed.

I saw it happen.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The habit.

Then something changed.

He stayed where he was.

Mercedes’ expression hardened.

“Don’t make me regret raising you.””

Javier looked at her.

“You already did.””

The parking garage went silent.

Mercedes stared at him.

I realized that was the first time Javier had ever challenged her.

Not for me.

Not for justice.

For himself.

And somehow, that was the most unexpected thing of all.

Mercedes stepped closer.

“You think she’ll forgive you?””

Javier didn’t answer.

“You think Clara will forget what you did?””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“She shouldn’t.””

Mercedes looked confused.

Then angry.

Because she understood.

Guilt was something she couldn’t control.

Fear was easy.

Shame was different.

I took out my phone.

Mercedes noticed.

“What are you doing?””

I smiled.

“Making sure this time, nobody forgets what happened.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

I held up the phone.

The recording screen was visible.

The conversation had been recording since she entered.

Mercedes stared at me.

“You think that proves anything?””

“Yes.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Especially when combined with the documents and the financial records.””

Mercedes’ confidence finally cracked.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Then suddenly, Javier’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“What is it?””

He lowered the phone.

“The police are at my mother’s house.””

Mercedes froze.

“What?””

“They found the original backup files.””

I looked at Elena.

She smiled faintly.

Because she had already known.

Before coming here, she had sent copies of everything Sofia gave us.

Mercedes turned toward Javier.

“You betrayed me.””

He looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was steady.

“You betrayed everyone.””

For the first time, Mercedes Rivas had nothing to say.

As police lights reflected against the garage walls, I watched the woman who had controlled everyone around her finally realize something.

She had spent years creating victims.

But she forgot one thing.

Victims eventually speak.

And when they do…

the truth becomes louder than fear.

I thought it was over.

I was wrong.

Because as the officers approached, one of them walked directly toward me.

“Ms. Morales?””

“Yes?””

He held a file.

“I’m afraid there’s one more issue.””

My heart tightened.

“What issue?””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a document.

A document with my name on it.

May you like

And this time…

the signature was mine.
