Chapter 6: The Company I Never Knew I Owned
I couldn’t sleep.
Not because I was scared.
Because my mind refused to stop.
A company.
The word kept repeating.
A company I supposedly owned.
A company I had never created.
Never managed.
Never heard of.
Yet somehow, my name was attached to it.
The next morning, Elena picked me up.
She didn’t say much during the drive.
That worried me.
Elena was never quiet unless something was serious.
When we arrived at her office, she placed a folder in front of me.
Inside were registration documents.
Business records.
Tax information.
Everything had my name.
My signature.
My identity.
But none of it felt like mine.
“How?””
Elena looked at the papers.
“Someone created this company using your details.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I already knew.
Javier.
Mercedes.
The people who had spent years telling me I was lucky to have them.
I flipped through the documents.
The company had been active for eighteen months.
Eighteen months.
While I was working.
While I was cooking dinner.
While I was planning holidays.
While I was believing my marriage was ordinary.
They were building something behind my back.
“What kind of company is it?””
Elena looked serious.
“A financial consulting company.””
I almost laughed.
“Javier doesn’t know anything about finance.””
“He knows enough to move money.””
I looked at the records.
Transactions.
Investments.
Transfers.
Then I saw a familiar name.
A company Mercedes had mentioned many times.
A company she claimed belonged to a family friend.
But the payments showed something else.
The money had been moving through my company.
Then into theirs.
I felt sick.
“They used me as a shield.””
Elena nodded.
“That’s what it appears.””
My phone rang.
Javier.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“What?””
His voice was different.
No confidence.
No arrogance.
Just panic.
“Clara, where are you?””
“Why?””
“We need to talk.””
“No.””
“Please.””
The word surprised me.
Javier never begged.
“I know what you found.””
I stayed silent.
He continued.
“Listen to me. You don’t understand everything.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
“Javier?””
“My mother made decisions.””
I closed my eyes.
Again.
Always someone else.
“You signed papers.””
“I trusted her.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I was trying to protect us.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
“Protect us?””
“Yes.””
“You protected yourself.””
“No, Clara. You don’t understand what happens if this comes out.””
There it was.
Not I’m sorry.
Not I hurt you.
Fear.
Only fear.
“What happens?””
His voice dropped.
“Everything falls apart.””
I looked at the documents.
At my stolen identity.
At the life they had built using my name.
“That sounds like your problem.””
“Clara.””
“No.””
I hung up.
But seconds later, another call came.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Clara Morales?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Sofia. I used to work for your husband’s company.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What company?””
There was a pause.
Then she said,
“The company you were supposed to be the owner of.””
I stood slowly.
“What do you mean?””
“I’ve been trying to contact you for months.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew something was wrong.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What happened?””
Her voice lowered.
“Javier and Mercedes weren’t just hiding money.””
I looked at Elena.
She was watching me carefully.
“What were they doing?””
Sofia hesitated.
Then whispered,
“They were preparing to blame everything on you.””
The room went silent.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Why?””
“Because when the authorities investigate the company…”
She stopped.
“Continue.””
“They planned for your name to be the only name left on the documents.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
They hadn’t just stolen from me.
They had built an escape plan.
One where I became the criminal.
Then Sofia said the words that changed everything.
“There’s one document they missed.””
“What document?””
“The original agreement.””
“Where is it?””
Her voice became almost a whisper.
“Mercedes has it.””
I looked out the window.
Across the street, a black car had stopped outside Elena’s office.
A second later, my phone buzzed.
A new message.
From Mercedes.
*You should have taken the money and stayed quiet. Now you’re going to learn what happens when you betray this family.*
I stared at the message.
Then I looked at Elena.
“They’re not trying to scare me anymore.””
She nodded.
“No.””
Her expression hardened.
“They’re trying to stop you.””
And at that moment, I knew something.
The restaurant was never the beginning of this war.
It was the moment they accidentally created their biggest mistake.
Because they had pushed me too far.
May you like
And now I wasn’t trying to save my marriage.
I was trying to expose the people who destroyed it.
