Chapter 8: The Man Who Wore My Husband's Face

Nia couldn't feel her hands.

The man outside the window looked like Darius.

Not vaguely similar.

Not like a distant relative.

He had the same dark eyes, the same straight nose, and the same scar above his left eyebrow.

But there was something different about the way he stood. His shoulders were relaxed. His face carried no trace of the contempt that had become so familiar to Nia.

Jonathan reached for the office door.

“Stay here,” he told Nia.

“Why?””

“Because if that man is Adrian Carter, we need to understand why he has presented himself as Daniel Reed.””

Nia followed him anyway.

She wasn't going to sit behind another closed door while people decided what she was allowed to know.

The man was waiting near the reception desk when they entered the lobby.

He looked at Jonathan first.

“Mr. Reed.””

Jonathan stopped several feet away.

“Who are you?””

The man gave a tired smile.

“You already know my name.””

“I know several names associated with your birth records. I need to establish which one you are using legally.””

The man's expression hardened.

“Adrian Carter. That's the name on my original birth record. Daniel Reed is the name I was given when I was adopted.””

Nia stepped forward.

“You look exactly like my husband.””

Adrian turned toward her.

“Then Denise succeeded.””

Nia felt a chill.

“Succeeded at what?””

“Making everyone believe I was someone else.””

Jonathan gestured toward a private conference room.

“Let's discuss this somewhere secure.””

Adrian hesitated.

“Is she alone?””

“Her sister is with her.””

Adrian nodded.

“Good. They both need to hear this.””

Inside the conference room, Adrian placed the brown envelope on the table.

He did not sit.

“My adoptive mother died three months ago,” he began.

“Before she died, she gave me this envelope and told me never to contact the Carter family unless I was prepared to lose everything.””

Nia watched him carefully.

“What was inside?””

“Copies of adoption papers. Hospital records. Letters from Evelyn Carter.””

He opened the envelope.

The first document showed two newborn boys.

One had been adopted by Denise Carter.

The other had been placed with Margaret Bell, who later became Daniel Reed's adoptive mother.

Adrian pointed to the photographs.

“This is me.””

Then he pointed to the second baby.

“And this is Darius.””

Nia stared at the photograph.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Two identical boys.

Two different lives.

One raised in wealth and privilege.

The other raised by a woman who had worked as a school secretary and lived in a modest house outside the city.

“How did Denise end up raising Darius?”” Nia asked.

Adrian took a breath.

“Evelyn was young when she gave birth. My biological father, William Williams, wanted to help her. But Denise had become involved with his business partner, a man named Robert Carter.””

“Her husband,” Nia said.

“Yes. Robert and William were building a property investment business together. Denise wanted a child, but she couldn't have one of her own. When Evelyn gave birth to twins, Denise convinced her to relinquish one baby.””

“Why only one?””

Adrian looked down.

“Because Robert wanted an heir. Denise wanted control of the family business. They believed raising one of William's sons would give them leverage over him.””

Nia felt sick.

“So Darius was adopted as part of a business arrangement?””

“That's what the letters suggest.””

“Did Darius know?””

Adrian shook his head.

“I don't know what Denise told him. But I know she made sure he believed he was the only child.””

Jonathan examined the documents.

“These records are important, but we'll need to verify their authenticity and establish the legal history.””

Adrian nodded.

“I expected that.””

Nia looked at him.

“Why did you contact us now?””

“Because Evelyn found me two weeks ago. She told me William had died, and she believed his death wasn't an accident.””

Nia's chest tightened.

“Where is she?””

“Safe, as far as I know.””

“Where?””

Adrian hesitated.

“I'm not giving you her location until I know you aren't working with Denise.””

Nia stared at him.

“You look like the man who beat me last night, and you're asking me to prove I'm not working with his family?””

Adrian's face softened.

“I know what Darius did to you.””

Nia went still.

“How?””

“Evelyn told me you were married to him. She also told me Denise had been using your name to move money.””

Nia looked at Jonathan.

He gave a small nod, indicating that the financial documents supported part of the claim.

Adrian continued.

“Evelyn believes Denise is preparing to destroy the original trust records. If she does, it will be much harder to establish what happened to William's assets.””

Nia touched the brass key in her pocket.

“We think this opens an archive beneath the old Hawthorne building.””

Adrian's eyes widened.

“Where did you get that?””

“Malik gave it to me.””

Adrian looked genuinely surprised.

“Malik finally chose a side?””

“Don't mistake one good decision for redemption,” Nia said.

He nodded.

“Fair enough.””

Jonathan pulled a chair toward the table.

“Adrian, do you have any evidence connecting Denise to the accident?””

Adrian took another paper from the envelope.

“This is a letter from Evelyn. She wrote it after William died.””

He slid it across the table.

Nia read the first paragraph.

William came to see me the night before he died. He said Denise had discovered the existence of the second trust and planned to take both children's inheritance. He told me he had copies of every transfer and a recording of Denise threatening him.

The letter continued.

I begged him to go to the police. He said he would, but first he needed to make sure his daughters were protected.

Nia stopped reading.

Her father had been thinking about her and Tasha until the very end.

She forced herself to continue.

After William died, Denise told me he had been killed in a road accident. She warned me that if I tried to contact either child, she would make sure I lost both of them forever.

Nia looked up.

“Did Evelyn know who caused the accident?””

Adrian shook his head.

“She said she heard a second car leave the road that night. She never saw the driver.””

Jonathan leaned forward.

“Did she report this to the police?””

“She tried. Her statement was never included in the final accident report.””

“Do you have proof?””

Adrian tapped the letter.

“She kept the receipt showing that she filed it. She also kept the name of the officer who received it.””

Jonathan took notes.

Nia looked back at the hospital records.

“Why did your adoptive mother give you the name Daniel Reed?””

Adrian's expression changed.

“She told me my original name was Adrian Williams. When I was adopted, the paperwork was changed. But she never explained why.””

“Did you ever meet Darius?””

“No.””

“Did you know he existed?””

“Not until Evelyn contacted me.””

Nia looked at his face again.

“If you and Darius are identical twins, how could Denise have kept you apart for thirty-one years?””

Adrian's mouth tightened.

“Because she had help.””

He opened a final document.

It was a photocopy of a hospital discharge form.

The signature at the bottom belonged to a nurse who had certified the release of both infants.

Beneath the signature was a handwritten note.

Second child released to Margaret Bell under instructions from Dr. H. Carter.

Nia stared at the surname.

“Carter?””

Adrian nodded.

“Denise's brother was a physician at the hospital. He arranged the paperwork.””

Jonathan examined the form.

“This could establish a connection, but we need the original records.””

Adrian gave a bitter smile.

“Good luck. The hospital says most of the files from that period were lost in a basement flood.””

“Convenient,” Nia muttered.

“Very.””

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Tasha.

Mom called me. She says Denise is at our childhood house. She's looking for Dad's folder.

Nia showed the screen to Jonathan.

“We need to get there.””

Jonathan shook his head.

“Not without police assistance.””

“If Denise gets that folder, she could destroy the evidence.””

“And if you confront her alone, you could put yourself in danger.””

Nia stood.

“Then call the police.””

Jonathan picked up his phone.

While he spoke with the authorities, Adrian approached Nia.

“There's something else you need to know.””

She turned.

“What?””

“Evelyn told me that William had another reason for keeping the twins apart.””

Nia's stomach tightened.

“What reason?””

Adrian looked toward Jonathan, who was still speaking on the phone.

“According to Evelyn, William discovered that one of the boys had a medical condition that could be used to identify him. Denise was terrified that the truth would come out.””

Nia stared at him.

“Which boy?””

Adrian hesitated.

“I don't know.””

He reached into his coat and produced an old hospital photograph.

It showed the two babies side by side.

One wore a blue bracelet.

The other wore a white bracelet.

On the back, someone had written two words.

*Blue: Adrian.*

*White: Daniel.*

Nia examined the image.

The baby with the white bracelet had a tiny mark near his left ear.

A crescent-shaped birthmark.

Nia had seen that mark every morning for four years when Darius stood before the bathroom mirror.

But the baby with the blue bracelet had the same mark.

Both boys had it.

Nia looked up.

“That's not enough to distinguish them.””

Adrian nodded.

“Exactly.””

Then he pulled another photograph from the envelope.

It showed Denise standing beside two hospital bassinets.

Her hand rested on the shoulder of a nurse.

The nurse's face was partly obscured, but the name tag was visible.

*E. Carter.*

Nia's breath caught.

“Evelyn?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No. That's Denise.””

Nia frowned.

“But the name tag says E. Carter.””

Adrian's voice dropped.

“Her full name is Eleanor Denise Carter.””

Nia stared at him.

The woman she had known as Denise had been using her middle name.

The same initial as Evelyn.

The same surname.

And the same initials appeared on the hospital documents that had changed the twins' identities.

Before Nia could ask another question, Jonathan ended his call.

“The police are sending officers to your mother's house. We need to wait for them.””

Nia nodded reluctantly.

Then her phone rang.

Darius.

She answered, putting him on speaker.

“Where are you?”” he demanded.

Nia said nothing.

“I know you've met him.””

“Met who?””

“Don't play games with me. My mother says Daniel Reed is with you.””

Adrian stepped closer to the phone.

“Hello, Darius.””

Silence.

Then Darius whispered, “You.””

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You remember me?””

Darius's voice changed.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

“You were supposed to stay dead.””

Nia looked at Adrian.

Jonathan stopped moving.

And on the other end of the line, Darius seemed to realize what he had just admitted.

“Forget what I said,” he snapped.

The call ended.

Nia stared at the phone.

Adrian's face had gone pale.

“He knows who I am.””

Jonathan slowly sat down.

“If Darius believed Adrian was dead, we need to understand why.””

Adrian looked at the hospital photograph.

May you like

Then he said something that made the room fall silent.

“Because the boy Denise raised wasn't supposed to survive the hospital.””
