Chapter 7: The Twin Nobody Was Allowed to Find

Nia read Jonathan's message so many times that the words began to blur.

The second child's birth certificate lists William Williams as the father.

Her father.

The man whose funeral she had attended six years earlier. The man whose old work boots still sat in a box beneath her mother's bed. The man who had taught her that family meant telling the truth, even when the truth cost you something.

He had fathered a child with Evelyn Carter.

And somehow, that child had disappeared from every story Nia had ever heard about her father's life.

“Nia?”” Tasha whispered.

Nia handed her the phone.

Tasha read the message, then covered her mouth.

“Oh, my God.””

“Did you know Dad had another child?””

“No.””

“Think carefully.””

“I swear, Nia. I didn't know.””

Nia watched her sister's face. Six years of lies had taught her to distrust even the expressions she knew best.

“Then why did Dad tell you to bring that folder to him the night he died?””

Tasha looked down at the brass key.

“Maybe the folder had something about the baby inside.””

“Where is it?””

“I don't know.””

“You gave it to Mom.””

“I know!””

Tasha's voice cracked.

“I thought she was going to help. I thought she would tell us what happened.””

Nia looked out through the shattered rear window.

The road was empty, but she couldn't shake the feeling that Darius was still somewhere behind them, waiting for another opportunity to take the key.

She started the car.

“We're going to Jonathan's office.””

“What about Malik?””

Nia tightened her grip on the steering wheel.

“He chose to help us. If he can get away from Denise, Jonathan can arrange for him to make a statement.””

“And if he can't?””

Nia didn't answer.

She had seen Denise's expression when Malik threw the key. The older woman hadn't looked like an angry mother whose son had disobeyed her.

She had looked like someone watching a lifetime of secrets come loose.

That frightened Nia more than Darius's threats.

They drove to a twenty-four-hour emergency department, where Tasha received treatment for a small cut on her forehead from the shattered glass. Nia insisted that the staff document the damage and the circumstances surrounding it. She then contacted the police and reported the assault, providing the location of the confrontation and the description of the SUV.

The officers took her statement but explained that they needed to investigate before making arrests.

Nia understood.

For the first time in her life, she wasn't going to rely on promises.

She would collect evidence.

At eight the next morning, Jonathan Reed met them in his office.

He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, narrow glasses, and the exhausted expression of a man who had spent too many years watching wealthy people use money to bury uncomfortable truths.

He placed a thick folder on the conference table.

“Before we begin,” he said, “I want you to understand that some of what I'm about to show you is preliminary. We have documents that raise serious questions, but not every question has an answer yet.””

Nia nodded.

“Show me everything.””

Jonathan opened the folder.

The first document was a birth certificate.

*Child: Adrian William Williams.*

*Mother: Evelyn Carter.*

*Father: William James Williams.*

The date of birth was thirty-one years earlier.

Nia stared at the page.

“Darius is thirty-one.””

“Correct,” Jonathan said.

“Then Adrian could be Darius.””

“He could be. But we have no proof that the names refer to the same person.””

Tasha leaned forward.

“What about the second baby?””

Jonathan turned the page.

A second birth certificate listed a child born on the same date.

*Child: Daniel William Williams.*

The mother was Evelyn Carter.

The father was also William James Williams.

Nia stared at the two names.

“Twins.””

“Yes.””

“Where are they now?””

“That is what we're trying to establish.””

Jonathan slid another document across the table.

It was an amended birth record for Adrian. His surname had been changed to Carter several months after his birth.

The adoptive parent listed on the accompanying document was Denise Carter.

Nia's mouth went dry.

“Denise adopted Darius?””

“The documents suggest that Denise legally adopted Adrian after Evelyn relinquished parental rights.””

“Why?””

“We don't know yet.””

Nia pointed at the second certificate.

“And Daniel?””

Jonathan's expression grew serious.

“There is no corresponding adoption record in the file. The original record shows that he was discharged from the hospital into the care of a private guardian.””

“Who?””

Jonathan hesitated.

“A woman named Margaret Bell.””

Tasha frowned.

“Who is she?””

“That's another question we're investigating.””

Nia sat back.

Two children.

One raised by Denise.

One handed to a private guardian.

Their father listed as William Williams.

And a mother whose existence had been erased from the family story.

“Did Dad know both children existed?”” Nia asked.

Jonathan nodded.

“I believe he did. I found a letter he wrote to Evelyn about six months before his death. He referred to both boys by their birth names.””

“Can I see it?””

Jonathan took a sealed envelope from the folder.

“This is a copy. The original remains in our secure records.””

Nia unfolded the letter.

Her father's handwriting looked smaller than she remembered, the lines uneven.

Evelyn,

I have spent too many years believing that keeping quiet was the same as protecting people. It wasn't. Denise has used our silence to turn two innocent children into weapons against each other.

Adrian deserves to know the truth about his birth. Daniel deserves to know he was never abandoned by his father.

I have tried to correct the records, but the financial documents are now tied to the trust, and Denise is threatening to destroy everything if I proceed.

If anything happens to me, please contact Jonathan. He knows where the original papers are.

Nia stopped reading.

“Dad knew he was in danger.””

Jonathan nodded.

“It appears he was concerned.””

“He knew Denise was threatening him, and he still went to meet her?””

“I suspect he believed he could resolve the dispute before it escalated.””

Nia looked at the letter again.

“Did he ever mention the twins to my mother?””

“I haven't found evidence that he did.””

Nia pressed her fingertips against her forehead.

Her father had carried an entire secret family while raising two daughters of his own.

She wanted to be angry with him.

She wanted to ask why he hadn't trusted them enough to tell them the truth.

But she also remembered the man in the recording, his voice strained as he spoke about protecting his daughters.

He had been trying to repair something that had been broken long before Nia was old enough to understand it.

And he had died before he could finish.

Jonathan opened another folder.

“This is where the financial investigation becomes important.””

He placed several transfer records on the table.

The first showed money moving from William's investment account into a company controlled by Denise.

The second showed the same company transferring money to a trust account.

The third showed a payment of $38,000 from that trust account into Nia and Darius's joint savings account.

Nia stared at the number.

“That's the money Darius said he had invested.””

“Do you have records showing where it went afterward?”” Jonathan asked.

Nia nodded slowly.

“The entire amount disappeared fourteen months ago.””

Jonathan slid a bank statement toward her.

“The money was transferred to an account held by a company called Hawthorne Holdings.””

Nia recognized the name from the legal notice.

“Who owns it?””

“According to the filing, Denise Carter and Adrian Carter.””

“Darius.””

“Possibly. The company records use the name Adrian Carter, which appears to be his legal name.””

Nia felt sick.

Her husband had told her the money was being invested for their future.

Instead, it had been moved into a company connected to the woman who had helped destroy her father's estate.

“Can I get the bank records?”” she asked.

“We can request them through the appropriate legal process.””

“And the papers I signed during the refinancing?””

“We need to obtain copies from the lender. If your signature was used to authorize a transfer you didn't understand, that could be significant.””

Nia looked at the records.

For the first time, the money had a path.

It wasn't just missing.

It had moved through a series of accounts, leaving a trail that could be followed.

Then Jonathan pulled out a final sheet.

It was a photocopy of a handwritten note.

Nia recognized her father's writing immediately.

If Evelyn cannot be found, look for the child who carries my mother's name.

Nia looked up.

“My grandmother's name was Grace.””

Jonathan nodded.

“The hospital records identify the second child as Daniel Grace Williams on a later document. The middle name may have been added after the original birth record.””

Tasha whispered, “Daniel Grace.””

Nia stared at the page.

“Why would Dad tell us to look for a child who carries his mother's name?””

Jonathan removed his glasses.

“Perhaps he knew where the child had gone. Or perhaps he wanted someone to follow the records.””

He turned the note over.

On the back was a street address.

A small town nearly two hours away.

Beneath it, her father had written a name.

*Daniel Reed.*

Nia looked at Jonathan.

“Reed?””

The lawyer's expression changed.

“My surname is Reed, yes. But I have no known relation to anyone named Daniel Reed.””

“Could he be related to you?””

“I don't know.””

Nia stood.

“Then let's find him.””

Jonathan gathered the documents.

“I'll make some calls. In the meantime, I need you both to remain somewhere safe. Denise knows you're investigating the trust, and Darius has already demonstrated that he is willing to use intimidation.””

Tasha nodded.

Nia picked up the brass key.

“What does this open?””

Jonathan examined it carefully.

“There is a small storage facility on Hawthorne Lane. Your father's old business records mention a private archive beneath the original office building.””

“Is the building still there?””

“Yes. The property is now controlled by Hawthorne Holdings.””

Nia's stomach tightened.

“Denise owns it.””

“Her company does.””

“And the key might open the archive?””

“Possibly.””

Nia looked at Tasha.

They both understood the implication.

The original documents might still be inside the very property Denise had taken from their father.

Jonathan stood.

“I'll arrange for a court order if necessary. Do not attempt to enter the property yourselves.””

Nia nodded.

But as she gathered her bag, her phone rang.

An unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“Is this Nia Williams?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel Reed.””

Nia froze.

Jonathan looked up.

The man continued.

“I was told your father left something for me.””

Nia gripped the phone.

“Who told you that?””

A pause followed.

Then he said, “A woman named Evelyn Carter.””

Nia's heart began to pound.

“Where are you?””

“Outside your lawyer's building.””

Jonathan moved toward the window.

Nia followed his gaze.

A man stood on the pavement below, wearing a dark coat and holding a brown envelope.

He looked to be in his early thirties.

He had her father's eyes.

And when he lifted his face toward the window, Nia saw something else.

A faint scar above his left eyebrow.

The same scar Darius had carried since childhood.

Jonathan's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Oh, my God.””

Nia turned toward him.

“What?””

Jonathan stared at the man outside.

“That's Adrian Carter.””

The phone remained pressed to Nia's ear.

The man on the pavement looked directly at her.

Then he spoke.

“Your husband is not the twin Denise raised.””
