Chapter 7: The Person I Never Suspected
The phone remained pressed against my ear long after the call ended.
I could still hear the nurse’s final words.
*The person who altered Maya’s birth file was someone you trusted.*
Someone I trusted.
Those three words followed me around the room like a shadow.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Marcus was watching me.
“What did she say?””
I looked at him.
I wanted to answer.
I wanted to say the words out loud.
But somehow, saying them would make them real.
Daniel stood up.
“Naomi.””
His voice was careful.
“What did Clara say?””
I looked between the two men.
“The person who changed Maya’s records…”
I swallowed.
“Was someone close to me.””
Marcus’s expression tightened.
“Someone close to you?””
I nodded.
Daniel went quiet.
Because he understood what I understood.
This was no longer about Vanessa alone.
Someone had helped her.
Someone had access.
Someone knew the truth about Maya’s birth.
And someone had spent years keeping it hidden.
The rest of the day passed like a dream.
I picked Maya up from school and smiled when she ran toward me.
But the smile felt heavy.
Because every time I looked at her, I saw the same little girl who had stood in the living room with tears in her eyes.
The same girl adults had been making decisions about without telling her why.
“Mom?””
I looked down.
“Yes?””
“You’re doing the face again.””
I forced a small laugh.
“What face?””
“The worried face.””
She studied me.
“Are you still thinking about Aunt Vanessa?””
I paused.
“Yes.””
Maya looked away.
“Is she coming back?””
I didn’t lie.
“I don’t know.””
Her fingers tightened around her backpack strap.
“I don’t want her near me.””
I knelt in front of her.
“You don’t have to be around anyone who makes you feel unsafe.””
She nodded.
Then she asked quietly:
“Do you know why she hates me?””
The question hurt more than I expected.
Because I knew the answer wasn’t simple.
“I think Vanessa has been carrying anger for a long time.””
“Because of me?””
“No.””
I held her shoulders gently.
“Never because of you.””
She looked at me.
“Promise?””
I smiled sadly.
“I promise.””
That night, after Maya went to sleep, I searched through every old document I had.
Medical records.
Hospital paperwork.
Letters.
Anything connected to the day she was born.
For years, I had kept everything in a locked box.
Not because I was hiding something.
Because those papers represented the hardest day of my life.
I opened the box.
The first thing I saw was a photograph.
Me in a hospital bed.
Holding baby Maya.
I remembered that day.
The exhaustion.
The fear.
The overwhelming love.
Then I saw something I had never noticed before.
A small handwritten note attached to the back of the photograph.
My breath caught.
I turned it over.
Three words were written there.
*“Ask about Clara.””*
My hands went cold.
Clara.
The nurse.
The woman who had just called me.
I had never seen that note before.
Or maybe I had.
Maybe I had seen it a hundred times and never understood it.
I searched through the box again.
Then I found another envelope.
Not mine.
Not from Daniel.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
Inside was a hospital document.
At the bottom was a signature.
A name.
I stared at it.
Because I knew that name.
Marcus.
But the signature wasn’t his.
It was someone else’s.
Someone who had signed paperwork on his behalf.
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Marcus stood in the doorway.
“You found something.””
I nodded.
He walked closer.
“What is it?””
I handed him the paper.
His face changed as soon as he read it.
“I’ve never seen this.””
“Your name is on it.””
“That’s not my signature.””
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“What is happening?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I was starting to understand.
Someone had been using people’s identities.
Changing documents.
Creating a story.
A false story.
The next morning, we met Clara at a small park away from our neighborhood.
She looked nervous.
Older than I expected.
She kept looking around as if she was afraid someone would appear.
When she saw us, she immediately looked at Daniel.
“I wasn’t sure you would come.””
Daniel nodded.
“You called because you wanted to tell the truth.””
Clara looked down.
“Yes.””
I stepped forward.
“Then tell me.””
She took a deep breath.
“I was a young nurse that night.””
She looked at me.
“I was new. I was scared. I made mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
Clara’s eyes filled with regret.
“The hospital had two emergency births that evening.””
She paused.
“One baby was yours.””
I held my breath.
“And the other?””
“A baby girl connected to Vanessa.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Her daughter?””
Clara nodded.
“Yes.””
The world seemed to tilt.
“What happened?””
Clara sat down on a bench.
“There was a complication with Vanessa’s baby.””
I listened carefully.
“She blamed everyone. The doctors. The hospital. The staff.””
Her voice became quieter.
“She believed someone had taken something from her.””
Marcus frowned.
“But what does that have to do with Maya?””
Clara looked at him.
“Because when the records were mixed up, Vanessa saw an opportunity.””
My stomach tightened.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“She knew the records were wrong?””
Clara nodded.
“She found out before anyone else.””
“Why didn’t she tell someone?””
Clara looked ashamed.
“Because she wanted something.””
“What?””
Clara looked at me.
“Your life.””
The words made no sense.
“What?””
“She became obsessed with the idea that everything you had should have been hers.””
My face hardened.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
Clara looked down.
“But Vanessa didn’t.””
Daniel whispered:
“She thought Maya was supposed to be connected to her.””
Clara nodded.
“She convinced herself that the mistake was proof.””
Marcus looked furious.
“So she manipulated everyone?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Clara closed her eyes.
“She convinced me to sign documents.””
My heart stopped.
“You helped her?””
Tears filled Clara’s eyes.
“I was young. I was afraid.””
“That doesn’t explain it.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“She threatened me.””
“With what?””
Clara looked at Daniel.
“She said she would tell the hospital I caused the mistake.””
Silence.
I understood then.
Vanessa didn’t just control people with kindness.
She controlled them with fear.
But there was still something I needed to know.
“Who else helped her?””
Clara hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“There was one other person.””
My heart started racing.
“Who?””
Clara looked at me.
“I don’t think you’re going to believe me.””
“Try me.””
She whispered the name.
And my entire body went cold.
Because it was the one person I never thought I would have to question.
The one person who had stood beside me.
The one person who had helped me raise Maya.
“Marcus.””
The world went silent.
I looked at the man standing beside me.
His face was filled with disbelief.
“No.””
Clara shook her head.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
But Clara reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old photograph.
Then she handed it to me.
The picture showed a hospital hallway.
A younger Vanessa.
A younger Clara.
And standing beside them…
was Marcus.
Holding a folder of medical documents.
My hands started shaking.
Marcus looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
“Naomi.””
I couldn’t speak.
Because the question I had been avoiding was now standing right in front of me.
May you like
Was Marcus the person who had protected us all these years?
Or was he the person who helped destroy the truth?
