Chapter 6: The Father Written on Paper
The paper slipped from my fingers.
It landed on the kitchen table with a soft sound.
Almost too soft for something that had just shattered everything I believed.
Marcus stared at the document.
His face had lost all color.
“No.””
It was the only word he could say.
I looked at him.
“Marcus…”
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“That’s not possible.””
I picked up the paper again.
My hands trembled as I read the line.
*Father: Marcus Hale.*
Not Daniel.
Not the man everyone believed was Maya’s biological father.
Marcus.
The man who had raised her.
The man who had held her hand when she was sick.
The man who taught her how to ride a bike.
The man who she called “Dad” even though she knew he wasn’t her biological father.
Or at least, that was what I had always told her.
I looked at Marcus.
“What does this mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Or because he did.
A terrible thought crossed my mind.
“Marcus.””
He looked up.
“Did you know?””
The pain on his face changed into shock.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
But I needed more.
“Are you sure?””
His eyes filled with hurt.
“Naomi, do you really think I would keep something like this from you?””
I looked away.
“No.””
But fear made people question everything.
Even the people they loved.
Marcus sat down.
“I need to understand.””
“So do I.””
For several minutes, we sat in silence.
The house felt unfamiliar.
Like the walls had been holding secrets from us.
Finally, Marcus picked up the document.
“This could be fake.””
I nodded.
“It could.””
“Vanessa could have changed it.””
“She could have.””
“But why?””
That was the question.
Why would Vanessa create a document proving Marcus was Maya’s father?
Unless…
Unless she wasn’t creating a lie.
Unless she was exposing one.
My stomach tightened.
“Daniel said the hospital records were important.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Call him.””
I reached for my phone.
But before I could dial, a message appeared.
From Daniel.
*I know you found it. We need to talk before Vanessa tells the court.*
I showed Marcus.
His jaw tightened.
“He knew.””
I nodded.
“He knew something.””
“Then we meet him.””
This time, I didn’t argue.
Because whatever happened next, we needed the truth.
The next morning, Daniel arrived at our house.
Maya was at school.
I had arranged it that way.
I didn’t want her caught in another storm created by adults.
When Daniel stepped inside, he looked at Marcus.
Neither man spoke.
There was history between them.
Years of resentment.
Years of misunderstanding.
Finally, Marcus broke the silence.
“You knew.””
Daniel looked down.
“I knew there were questions.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Marcus held up the document.
“You knew Marcus was listed as Maya’s father.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“Then explain.””
Daniel sat down.
“I didn’t know the truth at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“Three years after Maya was born.””
I stared at him.
“Three years?””
Daniel nodded.
“I found out when I tried to get legal records.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would you do that?””
“Because I wanted to come back.””
The room became quiet.
Daniel looked at me.
“I made mistakes. I know that. But leaving Maya was never what I wanted.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then why did you?””
His eyes lowered.
“Because Vanessa convinced me I had no rights.””
I remembered the letters.
The returned mail.
The lies.
“She told you I didn’t want you?””
“Yes.””
“And you believed her.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
It hurt.
Even if he had been manipulated, he had still walked away.
Daniel continued.
“When I discovered the records, I confronted Vanessa.””
“What did she say?””
“She said the records were changed because she was protecting everyone.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Protecting?””
Daniel looked at him.
“She said you didn’t know.””
My eyes moved between them.
“Know what?””
Daniel took a breath.
“The night Maya was born wasn’t what you think.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What happened?””
He looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Maya was born early.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No. You know the medical story.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“You don’t know what happened afterward.””
The room became painfully quiet.
“The hospital made a mistake,” he continued.
“A serious one.””
“What kind of mistake?””
Daniel looked at the document.
“The records for two babies were mixed.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“Two girls were born that night.””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Maya’s records were wrong.””
Marcus stood.
“Are you saying our daughter isn’t ours?””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head quickly.
“That’s not what I’m saying.””
“Then what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m saying Vanessa discovered the mistake.””
My hands became cold.
“And?””
“She used it.””
The word hung in the air.
“Used it how?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“By creating confusion.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
“Vanessa realized that if the records became complicated, she could use them against you.””
“For custody?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked furious.
“She waited all these years?””
Daniel nodded.
“She was collecting information.””
A chill ran through me.
The party.
The humiliation.
The camera.
The envelope.
The lawsuit.
Everything.
“She planned this.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.””
“But why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus asked the question that had been bothering me.
“What does she want?””
Daniel hesitated.
And that hesitation scared me.
“Daniel.””
He looked down.
“She wants control.””
“Of Maya?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because Maya is connected to something Vanessa lost years ago.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at the door.
Like he was afraid someone might hear.
“Vanessa had a daughter.””
The room went still.
I blinked.
“What?””
“She never told people.””
Marcus looked confused.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“The baby was taken away after a medical dispute at the hospital.””
My heart pounded.
“The same hospital?””
Daniel nodded.
“The same night Maya was born.””
A terrible possibility began forming.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Naomi…”
“No.””
I stood up.
“You’re saying Vanessa thinks Maya is connected to her?””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
Daniel’s expression was full of sadness.
“Not everything Vanessa does comes from reality.””
The words disturbed me.
Because they meant Vanessa might not just be fighting for custody.
She might believe she had a personal claim over Maya.
A claim built on grief.
On anger.
On years of obsession.
My phone rang.
Marcus looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman spoke.
Not Vanessa.
Someone older.
Someone crying.
“Is this Naomi?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Clara Whitmore.””
I froze.
Whitmore.
Daniel’s last name.
“I need to tell you something before Vanessa finds you.””
My grip tightened.
“Who are you?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“I was a nurse at the hospital the night Maya was born.””
Nobody in the room moved.
“What do you want?””
Her voice cracked.
“I want to apologize.””
“Why?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because I know what really happened.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
The woman continued.
“Vanessa wasn’t the only person who changed those records.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
The nurse whispered:
“Naomi…”
“Yes?””
“The person who altered Maya’s birth file…”
The line went silent.
Then she said:
“Was someone you trusted.””
The call ended.
I stood there holding the phone.
Unable to move.
Because suddenly the question wasn’t whether Vanessa had lied.
May you like
The question was:
Who else had been helping her all these years?
