Chapter 5: The Secret Written in the Records

The first thing I saw when I arrived home was Vanessa’s car parked outside.

The second thing I saw was the man standing beside her.

A lawyer.

Dark suit.

Leather briefcase.

Cold expression.

The kind of person who looked like he had delivered bad news many times and stopped caring about the damage it caused.

My heart sank.

This wasn’t a conversation.

It was a battle.

I opened the front door.

The living room was exactly where everything had started.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same place where Maya’s confidence had been attacked.

But this time, Vanessa wasn’t holding a pitcher.

She was holding documents.

Maya was sitting on the couch beside Marcus.

The moment she saw me, she stood.

“Mom.””

I rushed to her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

But her eyes told me she was scared.

Vanessa watched us.

She didn’t look angry.

She looked satisfied.

That frightened me more.

“You finally came back,” Vanessa said.

I ignored her.

I looked at the lawyer.

“Who are you?””

The man stood.

“Elliot Barnes.””

He handed me a business card.

“I represent Ms. Vanessa Hale.””

I didn’t take it.

“Why is your client here?””

Vanessa smiled.

“I think you know.””

“No,” I said.

“I want to hear you say it.””

Her smile faded slightly.

“I’m filing for temporary guardianship of Maya.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

Maya’s fingers immediately grabbed mine.

I felt her shaking.

“You’re trying to take my daughter?””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“I’m trying to protect her.””

The anger inside me was almost impossible to control.

“After what you did?””

Vanessa looked at Elliot.

“She’s emotional.””

Elliot remained expressionless.

“Ms. Naomi, my client’s concern is that Maya may be living in an unstable environment.””

I stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You hide things from her.””

My stomach tightened.

“Don’t.””

“You’ve lied about her father.””

Maya looked between us.

Her face changed.

She had heard enough.

“Mom?””

I immediately turned toward her.

“Maya, go upstairs for a minute.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

But firm.

“I want to know.””

I froze.

Because I realized something.

The secret I had protected her from for years was finally standing in front of her.

And I couldn’t stop the truth from reaching her forever.

Vanessa saw my hesitation.

And she used it.

“See?””

She looked at Elliot.

“She refuses to explain.””

“Stop talking about me like I’m not here,” Maya said.

Everyone went silent.

Vanessa looked surprised.

Maya stood.

“I’m not a problem you can move around.””

Her voice trembled.

But she continued.

“I’m a person.””

I felt tears forming.

Because that was the same girl Vanessa had tried to humiliate.

The same girl who had cried in my arms.

But now she was standing.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“Sweetheart, you don’t understand adult situations.””

Maya looked directly at her.

“I understand you hurt me.””

Nobody spoke.

Maya continued:

“And I understand you’re trying to hurt my mom now.””

For once, Vanessa had no immediate response.

Marcus stepped forward.

“This meeting is over.””

Elliot looked at him.

“My client has legal grounds to request temporary custody.””

“Based on what?””

Elliot opened his briefcase.

“Concerns about deception, the absence of Maya’s biological father, and questions surrounding her birth records.””

My blood ran cold.

Birth records.

Vanessa looked at me.

She knew.

She knew exactly what those words meant.

Marcus noticed my expression.

“What records?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I couldn’t.

Not there.

Not in front of Maya.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“That’s what I thought.””

Marcus turned toward me.

“Naomi?””

I looked at Maya.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

I had spent years telling myself I was protecting her.

But maybe I had only been protecting myself from the day she asked questions I wasn’t ready to answer.

Elliot gathered his papers.

“We will be requesting an emergency hearing.””

Vanessa walked toward the door.

Then she stopped beside Maya.

For a second, I thought she might apologize.

I was wrong.

“You’ll understand someday.””

Maya looked at her.

“No.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“I won’t understand.””

Maya’s voice was soft.

“Because I would never do this to someone.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

Then she left.

The door closed.

And the house became silent.

A silence full of things I had avoided for years.

Marcus turned to me.

“Naomi.””

I sat down slowly.

Maya remained standing.

“Mom.””

I looked up.

Her eyes were full of fear.

“What is everyone talking about?””

I swallowed.

“Maya…”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Please don’t tell me everything is okay.””

Her voice cracked.

“Because it’s not.””

I couldn’t argue.

She was right.

I reached for her hand.

“Your father’s name is Daniel.””

“I know.””

I froze.

“What?””

Maya looked down.

“I heard you and Marcus talking before.””

My heart sank.

“How much did you hear?””

“Enough.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I know he left.””

I took a breath.

“He didn’t leave because he didn’t love you.””

Maya looked confused.

“Then why?””

I didn’t know how to explain years of pain in one sentence.

“Because things happened that were more complicated than I understood.””

Maya looked toward the stairs.

“Everyone keeps saying things happened.””

She looked back at me.

“But nobody tells me what.””

That hurt because it was true.

I sat beside her.

“Your father and I had problems.””

“That’s all?””

“No.””

I looked at Marcus.

He gave me a small nod.

The truth had to come from me.

“Maya, when you were born…”

My voice became quiet.

“There was something wrong with the hospital records.””

She frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone changed information.””

Her eyes widened.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I looked down.

“Because someone wanted to control what happened to you.””

The room became still.

Maya whispered:

“Who?””

I couldn’t say Vanessa’s name.

Not yet.

Not until I knew everything.

“I’m still finding out.””

Maya pulled her hand away.

Not angrily.

Just hurt.

“You knew there were secrets about me?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

The question cut deeper than any accusation.

“I wanted to protect you.””

She looked at me.

“From what?””

I had no answer.

Because I realized something.

Children don’t only need protection from pain.

Sometimes they need the truth so they can understand themselves.

That night, after Maya went to sleep, I sat at the kitchen table with Marcus.

The old envelope from Daniel was between us.

The letters.

The documents.

The past.

“I should have told you everything,” I said.

Marcus looked at me.

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

I stared at the papers.

“That if people knew the truth, they would see Maya differently.””

Marcus reached across the table.

“Naomi.””

I looked up.

“Maya isn’t a secret to protect.””

My eyes filled.

“She’s my daughter.””

“I know.””

“And I failed her.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I touched the envelope.

“I let her grow up believing one story because I was afraid of another.””

Before Marcus could answer, there was a knock at the door.

Both of us froze.

It was nearly midnight.

Nobody visited at that hour.

Marcus stood.

“I’ll check.””

“No.””

I stood too.

Something told me I needed to see.

He opened the door.

Nobody was there.

Only a small package sitting on the doorstep.

No name.

No address.

Just a note attached.

I picked it up.

The handwriting was familiar.

Vanessa.

The note said:

*“You want the truth? Fine. Open the file inside.””*

My hands shook as I opened the package.

Inside was a copy of Maya’s original birth record.

I scanned the page.

Then I saw it.

A line that made my entire body go cold.

The name listed under *Mother* was mine.

But under *Father*…

was not Daniel’s.

It was Marcus’s.

I looked up slowly.

Marcus was staring at the paper too.

Neither of us spoke.

Because the impossible truth sitting between us meant one thing.

May you like

Someone had been lying for years.

And now I had to find out who.
