Chapter 8: The Truth Jack Buried

Daniel didn’t answer Brooke’s call.

He simply stared at the screen until it stopped ringing.

The silence afterward felt dangerous.

“She’s been contacting you?””

I asked.

Daniel looked tired.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Several months.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted information.””

“About Jack?””

“About the farm.””

Of course.

Everything always came back to the farm.

The land.

The money.

The thing everyone wanted.

Except me.

I just wanted the people I loved to stop hurting each other.

“What did you tell her?””

“Nothing.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel.””

“I swear.””

He stood.

“Linda, I made mistakes. I should have warned you sooner.””

“Why didn’t you?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because Jack made me promise.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He told me not to interfere unless you were truly in danger.””

I shook my head.

“That sounds like him.””

Daniel nodded.

“He believed people had to make their own choices.””

“And now?””

“Now I think he was right.””

I looked at him.

“But?””

“But I think he underestimated how far people would go.””

Daniel brought out an old folder.

The same kind of folder Jack used.

Worn edges.

Careful handwriting.

Inside were copies of letters.

Bank statements.

Notes.

I read through them slowly.

The first thing I saw was Ethan’s name.

My hands went cold.

“These are from years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“Ethan was struggling.””

“How?””

“He started a business.””

“I knew that.””

“He failed.””

I frowned.

“He told us it was doing well.””

“I know.””

The words hurt.

Because I realized how much my son had hidden.

“He borrowed money.””

“How much?””

Daniel gave me a number.

I sat back.

It was more than I expected.

“He never asked me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Jack told him he needed to learn responsibility.””

I looked down.

That sounded exactly like my husband.

Jack loved Ethan deeply.

But he never confused love with rescuing.

“What did Brooke know?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“That’s complicated.””

“Tell me.””

“She knew about the debt.””

“How?””

“Ethan told her after they married.””

I felt something shift.

“So Brooke knew he needed money.””

“Yes.””

“And she thought the farm could solve it.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what I believe.””

I closed the folder.

Suddenly, so many moments made sense.

The questions about the property.

The sudden interest in family history.

The way Brooke looked at me differently after discovering the trust.

She had not discovered my value.

She had discovered my assets.

When I returned home, Ethan was waiting.

I stopped walking.

He stood beside his truck.

“You went to see Daniel.””

It wasn’t a question.

“How did you know?””

“Brooke told me.””

Of course.

I looked at him.

“What else did she tell you?””

He looked away.

“Mom.””

“No.””

I walked closer.

“I need honesty now.””

He swallowed.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

He took a deep breath.

“I knew about the trust.””

“I know.””

“I knew Dad changed it.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“Because of my debt.””

I said nothing.

“Dad found out.””

“When?””

“Before he died.””

My heart hurt.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I looked at my son.

For the first time, I saw not a man who betrayed me.

But a scared boy hiding inside an adult body.

“How much did your father know?””

“All of it.””

“And he changed the trust because of you.””

Ethan nodded.

“He thought giving me everything immediately would destroy me.””

I closed my eyes.

That sounded like Jack.

“He wanted you to build something yourself.””

“Yes.””

“Did he ever tell you that?””

Ethan looked down.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because he was waiting for me to understand.””

The sadness in his voice almost broke me.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Why did Brooke know?””

Ethan went quiet.

Too quiet.

“Ethan.””

He looked at me.

“I told her.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought she was my wife.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

“She promised she wouldn’t use it against you.””

“And did you believe her?””

His silence answered.

I looked away.

Then Ethan said:

“Mom, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“She didn’t just know about the trust.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

“She knew about the condition.””

I turned back.

“What condition?””

Ethan looked terrified.

“The one Dad added before the farm could ever be transferred.””

“What condition?””

He whispered:

“He required you to approve the person who inherited it.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

“Why would Jack do that?””

“Because he knew someone might marry into the family for the wrong reasons.””

The words hit me.

Because suddenly I understood.

Jack had not only been protecting the farm.

He had been protecting me.

“Where is the original document?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

“Mom…”

“Where?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Brooke has it.””

The room went silent.

“She has the original?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Ethan looked away.

“Because she took it.””

I felt the anger rise.

“When?””

“After Dad’s funeral.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“When did you find out?””

“Yesterday.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

His face collapsed.

“I was scared.””

I stepped back.

“Of what?””

He whispered:

“That if you knew everything, you would never forgive me.””

Before I could answer, a car pulled into the driveway.

Both of us turned.

It was Brooke.

But she wasn’t alone.

A man stepped out of the passenger side.

A man I had never seen before.

Ethan looked at him.

And immediately went pale.

“Mom…”

“Who is that?””

He swallowed.

“That’s the man who helped Brooke find the documents.””

The man walked toward us.

Then he smiled.

“Linda Carter?””

I stared.

“Yes?””

He held out a folder.

“My name is Robert Hayes.””

I didn’t take it.

“What do you want?””

May you like

His smile disappeared.

“I think you’re going to want to see what’s inside.””
