Chapter 7: The Son I Thought I Knew

I spent the entire night staring at the ceiling.

Not because I believed Brooke.

Because I was afraid I didn’t.

That was the worst part.

If she had accused a stranger, I would have dismissed it.

If she had blamed someone else, I would have fought back.

But she said Ethan.

My son.

The little boy who once cried because his first horse got a scratch.

The teenager who sat beside me after Jack died and promised, “I’ll take care of you, Mom.””

The man who had held my hand at his father’s funeral.

Could he really have hidden something from me?

At sunrise, I was already in the barn.

I needed the familiar rhythm.

Hay.

Water.

Feed.

The simple honesty of animals.

Daisy watched me quietly while I cleaned her stall.

“You know what’s funny?”” I whispered.

She turned her head.

“I spent years worrying that Brooke would hurt my family.””

I brushed her coat slowly.

“I never worried about Ethan.””

Daisy lowered her head.

Maybe animals did understand more than people thought.

My phone rang.

I knew who it was before I looked.

Ethan.

I let it ring three times.

Then answered.

“Hello.””

“Mom.””

His voice sounded careful.

Too careful.

“Are you okay?””

“I’m fine.””

A pause.

“You don’t sound fine.””

I leaned against the stall door.

“Brooke came here yesterday.””

Another pause.

“What did she say?””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe I had to ask my own son this question.

“She said you told her about Jack’s instructions.””

The silence was immediate.

Too immediate.

“Ethan?””

“Mom, listen—”

“No.””

My voice surprised both of us.

“No, you listen.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did you tell her?””

Another silence.

Then:

“I didn’t mean to.””

My heart sank.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he sounded like someone apologizing for breaking a glass.

Not someone who had broken my trust.

“You didn’t mean to?””

“Mom…”

“What exactly did you tell her?””

He sighed.

“I found Dad’s documents after the dinner.””

“What documents?””

“The trust paperwork.””

I gripped the stall door.

“You found them?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

The world went quiet.

Months.

“You knew?””

“Mom, I was trying to understand everything.””

“And you told Brooke?””

“I only told her that Dad had made arrangements.””

“Only?””

“I didn’t tell her the details.””

I looked around the barn.

The place Jack built.

The place Ethan grew up.

“You told her enough.””

“Mom, I didn’t think she would—”

“Would what?””

I waited.

“Care?””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt more than if he had.

Because deep down, I knew.

He had seen who Brooke was.

He just didn’t want to believe it.

“I trusted you,” I said.

“I know.””

“No, Ethan.””

My voice broke.

“I don’t think you do.””

He became quiet.

“I trusted you with everything after your father died. The farm. The memories. His last wishes.””

“I know.””

“And you gave pieces of that away because you were afraid to upset your wife.””

“Mom…”

“I need space.””

“Please.””

“No.””

I ended the call.

Then I sat down on an overturned bucket inside the barn.

And for the first time in years, I cried where nobody could see me.

That afternoon, Margaret called.

“Linda, we found something.””

I wiped my eyes and answered.

“What?””

“The fake document.””

I stood.

“What about it?””

“It wasn’t created recently.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“It was prepared almost a year ago.””

A year.

I remembered.

The anniversary of Jack’s death.

The months when Ethan and Brooke had visited more often.

The months when Brooke suddenly became interested in family history.

“What else?””

Margaret hesitated.

“There’s a name attached to the file.””

“Whose?””

“Daniel Carter.””

I froze.

Daniel.

Jack’s younger brother.

My brother-in-law.

I hadn’t spoken to him in years.

“Why would Daniel do this?””

“I don’t know.””

“But?””

“But he was listed as a witness on the original trust documents.””

I sat down.

“Jack trusted him.””

“Yes.””

“And now?””

“Now we need to find out why he changed sides.””

I looked toward the window.

The answer felt closer.

And somehow more painful.

Daniel lived two hours away.

A small house near the mountains.

I hadn’t seen him since Jack’s funeral.

When he opened the door and saw me, his face changed.

“Linda.””

“Daniel.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“What are you doing here?””

“I need answers.””

He stepped back.

“I don’t think this is a good time.””

“That means you know why I’m here.””

His expression hardened.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“I didn’t say you did.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I stepped inside.

“Daniel, someone created a fake document using my signature.””

He went pale.

“I don’t know anything about that.””

“But your name is on it.””

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“Who told you?””

I stared at him.

“So you do know.””

Daniel sat down.

He looked older than I remembered.

“Jack was my brother.””

“I know.””

“You think I would betray him?””

“I think someone did.””

His hands shook slightly.

“Jack made a mistake.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He thought he was protecting you.””

“From who?””

Daniel looked at me.

And the fear in his eyes answered before his words did.

“From Ethan.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

“Linda—”

“No.””

Because I could accept betrayal from Brooke.

I could accept greed.

I could accept selfishness.

But not this.

Not my son.

Daniel looked down.

“Jack found out something before he died.””

“What?””

“He found financial problems.””

“With the farm?””

“No.””

He swallowed.

“With Ethan.””

My chest tightened.

“What financial problems?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Your son had debts.””

The room felt smaller.

“He was young.””

“How much?””

Daniel looked away.

“More than he could handle.””

I remembered Ethan’s new car.

The expensive apartment.

The vacations.

Things I thought he had earned.

“He told Jack?””

“No.””

“Then how did Jack know?””

“Because Jack was his father.””

That sounded exactly like Jack.

He always knew when Ethan was hiding something.

“What did Jack do?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He paid some of it.””

I closed my eyes.

“But not all?””

“No.””

“What happened next?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Jack changed the trust.””

My heart stopped.

“Changed it how?””

Daniel looked toward the floor.

“Linda, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Jack wasn’t trying to punish Ethan.””

“Then what was he doing?””

Daniel’s voice became barely audible.

“He was trying to save him from himself.””

Before I could ask anything else, Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

I saw the name.

Brooke.

May you like

And then Daniel said something that made my blood turn cold.

“She knows I talked to you.””
