Chapter 8: The Ghost From Adrian’s Past
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The name on the screen remained there.
A name that should have been impossible.
A name that belonged to someone who was no longer part of their lives.
A name that had been buried with the past.
*Evelyn Carter.*
Adrian stared at the screen.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
“No.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Her eyes were wide.
“She’s dead.””
Nobody responded.
Because everyone knew.
Evelyn Carter had been dead for seven years.
Adrian’s first wife.
Olivia’s mother.
The woman whose photograph still sat inside a drawer upstairs because Adrian never had the heart to throw it away.
The woman who had died in a car accident on a rainy night.
The woman everyone believed was gone.
But the video had just shown her name.
And whoever was behind everything wanted us to believe she was involved.
I looked at Olivia.
She was staring at the screen.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Just scared.
“Olivia,” I whispered.
She looked at me.
“What?””
“Did you know that name?””
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
My heart tightened.
“How?””
She looked toward her father.
“Dad talks about her sometimes.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Olivia…”
“But not like this.””
The little girl stepped closer to the computer.
“She’s not the person in the video.””
Everyone turned.
“What do you mean?”” Adrian asked.
Olivia pointed at the screen.
“The person said Evelyn’s name.””
“Yes.””
“But the voice wasn’t hers.””
The room went silent.
Adrian stared.
“You’re sure?””
Olivia nodded.
“I know Mom’s voice.””
A nine-year-old child.
Recognizing her mother’s voice even after seven years.
That was something nobody could argue with.
Adrian moved closer.
“Play it again.””
The video loaded.
The kitchen appeared.
The timestamp.
The hidden angle.
The phone camera.
The mysterious person placing the phone down.
Then the name.
Evelyn Carter.
But this time, everyone listened.
Carefully.
The voice came again.
“Don’t worry, Olivia. Your father will finally see the truth.””
Adrian’s face changed.
Because he heard it too.
“That’s not her.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
His voice was firm.
“That’s not Evelyn.””
A strange relief moved through the room.
Not because the mystery was solved.
Because the impossible had become something else.
A trick.
Someone was using a dead woman’s name.
Someone wanted Adrian emotionally confused.
Someone wanted him looking backward.
“Why?”” I asked.
Everyone looked at me.
“Why use Evelyn?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
He walked toward the window.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then:
“Because everyone in this family has a weakness.””
His voice was quiet.
“Michael wanted money.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“She wanted to protect herself.””
Then at Olivia.
“And I…”
He stopped.
I knew what he meant.
Evelyn.
His past.
His guilt.
His grief.
Someone had studied him.
Someone knew exactly where to hurt him.
A sound came from upstairs.
A door closing.
Everyone froze.
Adrian immediately looked toward the staircase.
“Olivia?””
No answer.
My heart jumped.
She was standing beside me.
Then who was upstairs?
Adrian moved quickly.
I followed.
Not because I was brave.
Because after everything that happened, nobody was going to be left alone.
We reached the hallway.
The door to Adrian’s office was open.
It had been closed.
Locked.
Earlier.
Now it was open.
Adrian stepped inside.
The room looked different.
Not destroyed.
Not messy.
Just disturbed.
A drawer was open.
Files were moved.
Someone had searched the room again.
“They came back,” Adrian whispered.
Vanessa appeared behind us.
“Who?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because he saw something on his desk.
A small envelope.
His name written on it.
Again.
*For Adrian.*
He picked it up.
“No.””
Vanessa looked nervous.
“What?””
“Another message.””
He opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Not printed.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
The first line made his face change.
*Adrian, I know you blame yourself for what happened to Evelyn.*
Nobody spoke.
Because that sentence wasn’t random.
It was personal.
Only someone who knew Adrian deeply would write that.
He continued reading.
His expression changed with every line.
“What does it say?”” Vanessa asked.
Adrian didn’t answer.
I watched him.
The anger disappeared.
Replaced by something else.
Pain.
Finally, he handed me the letter.
I read it.
And my stomach dropped.
*You always believed Evelyn’s death was an accident.*
*You were wrong.*
*Someone in your family knew what happened that night.*
*Someone let her die.*
I looked up.
Adrian was staring at the floor.
“No.””
The word was barely audible.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa took the letter from me.
Her eyes moved quickly.
Then she looked at him.
“What if it’s true?””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
“What if someone hid something from you?””
His expression hardened.
“Everyone has hidden something from me today.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
The question was how deep it went.
He looked at the letter again.
“Who sent this?””
A sound came from the hallway.
A phone vibrating.
Everyone turned.
The sound came from Olivia’s room.
Adrian ran.
The door was open.
On the bed was a phone.
Not Olivia’s.
Not Adrian’s.
A phone nobody recognized.
He picked it up.
The screen showed one missed call.
Then a message appeared.
*She deserves to know the truth.*
Adrian looked at Olivia.
“Who gave you this phone?””
She shook her head.
“I’ve never seen it before.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“This was in her room?””
“Yes.””
I felt cold.
Someone had entered Olivia’s room.
Someone had been close enough to leave a phone beside her bed.
Close enough to watch.
Adrian looked around.
Then he noticed something.
A small piece of paper beside the phone.
He picked it up.
Three words.
*Ask the nanny.*
Everyone looked at me.
My stomach tightened.
“Me?””
Adrian turned.
“Why would they tell us to ask you?””
I stared at the note.
Because I didn’t know.
Then suddenly…
I remembered.
A moment from seven years ago.
A moment I had forgotten.
A moment that now felt important.
Before I worked for Adrian.
Before Emma.
Before this house.
I had worked at a small daycare.
One of the children there had been named Olivia.
And one day, her mother had come to pick her up.
A woman with tired eyes.
A woman who looked scared.
A woman who asked me one strange question.
“Do you believe people can hide the truth forever?””
At the time, I thought she was just having a bad day.
But now…
I remembered her face.
Because she was not a stranger.
She was Evelyn Carter.
I looked at Adrian.
“I met your wife.””
Nobody spoke.
Adrian went completely still.
“What?””
“Before she died.””
Vanessa stared.
“You knew Evelyn?””
“Not like that.””
I shook my head.
“I worked at a daycare. She came there once.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know it was her.””
His face changed.
“What do you mean?””
“I didn’t know her name.””
I looked at the letter.
At the phone.
At the hidden messages.
“She asked me something.””
“What?””
My voice lowered.
“She asked if I would help protect her daughter if something happened to her.””
The room went silent.
Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Mom said that?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
Adrian looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
I swallowed.
“But she gave me something.””
“What?””
I had never thought about it in years.
Not until now.
A small object.
A forgotten item at the bottom of a drawer.
Something I kept because I felt guilty throwing it away.
Something Evelyn had given me that day.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Clara.””
I looked at him.
“I still have it.””
Nobody moved.
Because suddenly, the nanny who had been blamed for everything…
was the only person carrying a message from the woman everyone thought was gone.

And when I revealed what Evelyn had left me seven years ago…
we would finally understand why someone was willing to destroy an entire family to keep the truth buried.
