Chapter 4: The Secret That Was Never About Emma

Adrian read the message three times.

Like his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

The kitchen became painfully quiet.

The kind of silence that comes after something breaks and everyone is waiting to hear the sound of the pieces hitting the floor.

Vanessa reached for the phone.

“Give that to me.””

Adrian stepped back.

“No.””

“Adrian, you don’t understand.””

“You’re right.””

His voice was low.

“I don’t understand anything anymore.””

The words hurt more than anger would have.

Because anger meant there was still something left to fight for.

But disappointment?

That was different.

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, she wasn’t performing.

She looked like someone who had lost control of a situation she thought she owned.

“Let me explain.””

Adrian held up the phone.

“Explain this.””

He turned the screen toward her.

The message was still there.

*Did the nanny take the blame like we expected?*

Olivia stood beside the doorway, frozen.

I moved closer to her.

Not because I was afraid.

Because she was a child standing in the middle of something no child should have to witness.

“Olivia,” I whispered, “go to your room.””

She looked at me.

“But I want to know the truth.””

My heart tightened.

Because I understood.

She wasn’t being nosy.

She had spent weeks watching adults hide things from her.

She wanted proof that someone was finally telling the truth.

“Sweetheart,” Adrian said softly, “please.””

This time, Olivia listened.

She walked upstairs slowly.

But before she disappeared, she looked back at Vanessa.

There was no anger in her eyes.

Only disappointment.

And somehow, that seemed to hurt Vanessa more than anything else.

When Olivia was gone, Adrian turned back.

“Who is Daniel?””

Vanessa sat down.

Her shoulders dropped.

“I can explain.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I can.””

“Then do it.””

She looked at me.

“No.””

Adrian followed her eyes.

“No?””

“I don’t want Clara here.””

I almost laughed.

After everything?

After she had tried to destroy my life?

She still wanted control.

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

The answer surprised both of us.

“She stays.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“She’s part of this.””

“She was dragged into this.””

“No, she wasn’t.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Vanessa.””

The warning in his voice made her stop.

I watched her carefully.

Because I had spent months around her.

I knew when she was scared.

I knew when she was angry.

But this was something different.

She looked trapped.

Finally, she spoke.

“Daniel used to work for a company that supplied medical products to hospitals.””

Adrian crossed his arms.

“And?””

“And he made a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

Vanessa looked down.

“A mistake that cost him his job.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t explain why he’s texting you.””

She ignored me.

Adrian didn’t.

“Answer her.””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“He blamed me.””

“For what?””

“For reporting him.””

The kitchen went silent.

I stared at her.

“You reported him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would he help you?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the part that didn’t make sense.

Unless…

I looked at the phone.

Unless Daniel wasn’t helping her.

Unless he was using her.

Adrian seemed to realize the same thing.

“What did Daniel want?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Stop lying.””

“I’m not.””

“You’re still protecting him.””

“No.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Vanessa’s hands started shaking.

“He wanted information.””

“About what?””

She stayed quiet.

Adrian stepped closer.

“About Emma.””

The name changed everything.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And I knew.

I knew before she said anything.

This was never about making Emma sick.

The bottle was just a distraction.

A way to create chaos.

A way to make everyone look in the wrong direction.

“What information?”” Adrian asked.

Vanessa whispered:

“Your company.””

Adrian froze.

“My company?””

She nodded.

“Daniel wanted access to some files.””

I watched Adrian’s face.

He looked confused.

Then angry.

Then hurt.

“Why would he need access to my company files?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Why, Vanessa?””

Finally, she looked up.

“Because he knew I was married to you.””

The words landed heavily.

I felt a chill.

Daniel wasn’t connected to Emma.

He was connected to Adrian.

To his business.

To his life.

Vanessa had used her own daughter as part of something bigger.

Adrian walked away from her.

“You put Emma in danger because of my company?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

“I didn’t.””

“Your messages say otherwise.””

She stood quickly.

“No, they don’t.””

“They say you expected Clara to take the blame.””

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

The sentence came out too fast.

Everyone stopped.

Because she had just admitted something.

Not everything.

But enough.

Adrian stared.

“What do you mean it wasn’t supposed to happen?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

“I mean…”

“You planned something.””

“No.””

“You planned something.””

Her face turned pale.

I watched her search for another lie.

Another explanation.

But there was nowhere left to go.

“I was scared,” she finally whispered.

Adrian laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

“You were scared, so you framed Clara?””

“No.””

“You let everyone believe she hurt Emma.””

“I didn’t know she would get blamed.””

I stepped forward.

“Then what did you think would happen?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for a second, I saw something ugly.

Not hatred.

Fear.

“You were supposed to leave.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

“You were supposed to quit.””

Adrian stared.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because Daniel told me the nanny was the easiest person to remove.””

My stomach turned.

All this time…

I wasn’t the target because I had done something wrong.

I was the target because I was convenient.

Someone who had no power.

Someone people could doubt.

Someone who would be blamed before being believed.

Adrian rubbed his face.

“I can’t believe this.””

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Adrian, listen.””

“No.””

“I did it because I was trying to protect us.””

“Protect us?””

“Yes.””

“By putting our daughter at risk?””

“No one was supposed to get hurt.””

The sentence made me angry.

Because people always said that after causing damage.

No one was supposed to get hurt.

Except someone always did.

Adrian looked at the bottle on the counter.

“Did Daniel tell you to put something in it?””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“No.””

“Did he?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t put anything in Emma’s bottle.””

Nobody spoke.

The statement hung there.

Because if she was telling the truth…

Then someone else had.

I looked at the kitchen.

The bottle.

The counter.

The open back door.

The hidden wrapper.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Adrian.””

He looked at me.

“Someone else was here.””

Vanessa immediately looked nervous.

Not surprised.

Nervous.

I noticed.

“Why are you reacting like that?”” I asked.

“I’m not.””

“Yes, you are.””

Adrian looked between us.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Vanessa’s silence returned.

And this time, it was different.

She wasn’t hiding Daniel.

She was hiding someone else.

“Vanessa.””

She looked toward the stairs.

Toward Olivia’s room.

Then back at Adrian.

“I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

Her voice became barely a whisper.

“Daniel wasn’t the only person involved.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who else?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And when she finally spoke, the name shocked all of us.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t someone from Daniel’s past.

It was someone who had been sitting at their family dinner table.

Someone Adrian trusted.

Someone who had been inside this house many times before.

“Your brother,” Vanessa whispered.

Adrian went completely still.

“My brother?””

She nodded.

“Michael knew everything.””

The kitchen seemed to tilt.

Because Michael wasn’t just Adrian’s brother.

He was the person who had hugged Emma that morning.

The person who had smiled at me.

The person who had told Adrian he was lucky to have a nanny he could trust.

And now Vanessa was saying he was part of the plan.

Then Adrian’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time, from Michael.

Adrian looked at the screen.

And whatever he saw made all the color disappear from his face.

He slowly turned the phone around.

May you like

The message was only six words.

*You should have blamed Clara faster.*
