Chapter 5: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

For several seconds, Adrian didn’t move.

He just stared at the message.

Six words.

Six words that changed the entire shape of the nightmare.

*You should have blamed Clara faster.*

I watched his fingers tighten around the phone.

Not shaking.

Not trembling.

Just tightening.

Like he was holding onto the last piece of trust he had left.

“Michael wrote this?”” he asked.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody needed to.

The name was right there on the screen.

Michael.

His brother.

The person who had spent years standing beside him.

The person who had been there when Adrian’s first wife passed away.

The person who had helped him rebuild his life.

The person who had kissed Emma’s forehead that morning and called her “the little princess of the family.””

I remembered that moment.

Michael standing in the living room.

Smiling.

Laughing.

Saying, “She’s lucky to have so many people protecting her.””

The memory made my stomach twist.

Because now I wondered.

Was he protecting her?

Or was he waiting for the right moment to hurt her?

“Call him,” Adrian said.

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

“Call Michael.””

“Adrian—”

“Now.””

The command in his voice made her stop.

She picked up her phone.

Then hesitated.

Adrian noticed.

“Why are you hesitating?””

“I don’t know what to say.””

“The truth.””

Her eyes moved away.

“The truth is complicated.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“The truth is usually simple. Lies are complicated.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

Vanessa had built an entire world around lies.

But now every lie was collapsing.

She pressed the call button.

The speaker was turned on.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then someone answered.

“Vanessa?””

Michael’s voice filled the kitchen.

Calm.

Normal.

Almost too normal.

Adrian closed his eyes for a second.

Because hearing his brother’s voice was worse than seeing the message.

“Michael,” Adrian said.

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“Adrian?””

“You texted me.””

Another pause.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian looked at the phone.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.””

Michael exhaled.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“With Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Then Michael’s voice changed slightly.

Not enough for someone who didn’t know him.

But Adrian knew him.

“What happened?””

Adrian looked at the bottle on the counter.

“Emma got sick.””

Michael became quiet.

“What?””

“And Clara was blamed.””

Another silence.

This one felt different.

Like Michael was choosing his next words carefully.

“Is Emma okay?””

The question sounded concerned.

But something about it bothered me.

Because he didn’t ask what happened.

He didn’t ask what symptoms she had.

He asked if the plan had succeeded.

Or failed.

Adrian heard it too.

“Why did you text me?””

Michael didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

“I made a mistake.””

The words shocked everyone.

Even Vanessa.

“What mistake?”” Adrian asked.

“I shouldn’t have sent that message.””

“You shouldn’t have sent it?””

“Yes.””

“That’s what you’re worried about?””

Michael sighed.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

“No. You listen.””

His voice became harder.

“My daughter was crying. Clara was being accused. Vanessa was lying.””

“I know.””

The answer came too quickly.

Everyone froze.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You know?””

Michael went silent.

And in that silence, the truth appeared.

Not completely.

But enough.

“You knew Emma was involved.””

“I didn’t want anyone hurt.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

There it was again.

The same excuse.

The same sentence.

No one wanted anyone hurt.

But somehow, everyone kept creating pain.

Adrian gripped the phone.

“What did you do?””

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Then why did you say you should have blamed Clara faster?””

No answer.

“Michael.””

Finally, his brother spoke.

“Because the plan failed.””

The kitchen went completely still.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

Adrian looked like someone had punched him.

“The plan?””

Michael realized too late.

But the damage was done.

“What plan?””

Another silence.

Then the call ended.

Michael hung up.

Adrian stared at the phone.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he calmly pressed call again.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

No answer.

“He won’t pick up,” Vanessa whispered.

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew.””

She didn’t deny it.

Not anymore.

“I knew he wanted something.””

“What?””

“My husband.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“I knew Daniel was angry. I knew Michael was angry. But I didn’t understand how far they were willing to go.””

“Why were they angry?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because of your father.””

The answer confused me.

Adrian stared.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“My father has been dead for five years.””

“I know.””

“Then what does he have to do with this?””

Vanessa sat down.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“A document.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“What document?””

“Your father’s old business records.””

The room became quieter.

I knew Adrian’s father had owned several companies before he retired.

But I had never heard anything about old records.

“What was in them?”” Adrian asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Proof that Michael wasn’t the person everyone thought he was.””

Adrian stepped back.

“My brother?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

Like he rejected the idea before even hearing it.

“No, Michael wouldn’t.””

Vanessa looked at him sadly.

“That’s exactly why he could do it.””

Adrian said nothing.

Because sometimes the people closest to us are the easiest to believe.

And the hardest to question.

“What did the records show?”” he asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

“That Michael had been moving money from your father’s company.””

“How much?””

She looked down.

“A lot.””

“How did you find this?””

“Daniel showed me.””

I frowned.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“So Daniel wasn’t trying to hurt you?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“No.””

“Then what was he doing?””

“Using me.””

The answer was quiet.

But honest.

“He knew I wanted to protect my marriage. He knew I was afraid Adrian would never believe me about Michael.””

Adrian looked hurt.

“You should have come to me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“When I found the documents.””

“And?””

“You were preparing the merger.””

She shook her head.

“You were stressed. You barely slept. Every time I tried to talk about problems, you told me we would handle them later.””

Adrian looked away.

Because that part might have been true.

Not enough to excuse what happened.

But enough to explain why a secret had grown.

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel said he could help.””

“By framing Clara?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

“He said we needed a distraction.””

My chest tightened.

“A distraction?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“From Michael searching the house.””

Everyone stopped.

“What?””

“He was looking for the documents.””

Adrian shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s not.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Michael knew you kept copies of important files at home.””

I suddenly remembered something.

A small detail.

Something I had ignored.

Three days earlier, Michael had asked me a strange question.

He had been standing in the hallway while I cleaned.

“Clara, does Adrian keep his office locked?””

I thought it was an innocent question.

I said yes.

Then Michael smiled.

“Good. He should.””

At the time, I didn’t think anything of it.

Now I felt cold.

Because maybe he wasn’t asking.

Maybe he was checking.

“Adrian.””

He looked at me.

“I remembered something.””

I told him about Michael asking about the office.

His expression changed.

“When?””

“Three days ago.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Before everything happened.””

Adrian walked toward the stairs.

“My office.””

I followed him with my eyes.

“What?””

“If Michael was searching for something…”

He didn’t finish.

He didn’t need to.

He ran upstairs.

The rest of us followed.

The office door was closed.

Locked.

Exactly as always.

Adrian pulled out his key.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

At first, everything looked normal.

The desk.

The shelves.

The computer.

The files.

Then Adrian stopped.

“What?””

He walked slowly toward the bookshelf.

I saw it immediately.

One empty space.

A gap between two folders.

Something had been removed.

Adrian reached out.

Behind the missing file was a small envelope.

He pulled it out.

On the front was a handwritten note.

Three words.

*For Adrian only.*

His hands went still.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph that made Vanessa gasp.

Because it showed Michael.

Standing outside our house.

Holding something in his hand.

Something that looked exactly like the bottle Emma had been drinking from.

Adrian turned the picture over.

There was writing on the back.

A date.

A time.

And a sentence.

A sentence that revealed Michael had been planning this long before today.

*The nanny will take the fall. The baby will prove the father’s weakness.*

Adrian dropped the photograph.

And for the first time since this started…

I saw fear on his face.

Not fear for himself.

Fear because he finally understood.

Emma wasn’t the target.

I wasn’t the target.

The entire family was.

Then Adrian’s computer screen suddenly turned on.

Nobody had touched it.

A notification appeared.

A new email.

From an unknown sender.

The subject line was only three words.

*You found it.*

And beneath it was a video file.

A video recorded inside the house.

May you like

A video that had been made before Emma ever cried.

A video showing exactly who had entered the kitchen first.
