Chapter 7: The Woman Behind The Curtain
The name hung in the room like a warning.
“Chloe?””
Ethan said it quietly.
Almost like saying it louder would make it real.
Alexander Morgan placed the photograph on the table.
The woman smiling back at them was the same woman who had stood beside Ethan at the hotel entrance.
The same woman who had laughed while Claire stood in the rain.
The same woman Ethan believed had chosen him because of who he was.
But now everything looked different.
Claire stared at the photograph.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
Her father looked at her.
“You know something?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
Ethan grabbed the photograph.
“This is impossible.””
Alexander remained calm.
“We traced several financial movements connected to the missing ownership records.””
He pointed to the documents.
“Someone had access to private information about Caldwell Innovations before the company became successful.””
Ethan looked through the pages.
“And that person was Chloe?””
“Not exactly.””
Alexander’s answer made him stop.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Chloe wasn’t the person controlling everything.””
A pause.
“She was the connection.””
The room became silent.
Claire looked at her father.
“Connection to who?””
Alexander didn’t answer immediately.
He turned another page.
“We found payments from an offshore account.””
Ethan frowned.
“Whose account?””
Alexander looked at him.
“That’s the problem.””
He pushed the document forward.
“The account owner has been hidden.””
Claire studied the page.
“Then how do you know Chloe is involved?””
Alexander pointed to a line.
“A communication record.””
Claire read it.
Her eyes widened.
A message.
A message between Chloe and an unknown person.
*He still believes the story. Keep him comfortable.*
Ethan’s face changed.
“She said that?””
Alexander nodded.
“Three months before you married Claire.””
The words hit him.
Three months.
Before their wedding.
Before he promised forever.
Before he looked into Claire’s eyes and said she was the only person who believed in him.
Chloe already knew.
About him.
About Claire.
About everything.
Ethan left the Morgan estate without saying goodbye.
He barely remembered walking to his car.
His mind was trapped in memories.
Chloe laughing beside him.
Chloe telling him he deserved someone who matched his success.
Chloe saying Claire was holding him back.
Every conversation suddenly felt different.
Every compliment sounded calculated.
His phone rang.
Chloe.
He stared at the name.
For months, that name had brought him comfort.
Now it made his stomach tighten.
He answered.
“What?””
A pause.
“Ethan?””
Her voice sounded surprised.
“You sound upset.””
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
“At home.””
“Stay there.””
Silence.
“What?””
“I said stay there.””
“Ethan, what is happening?””
He ended the call.
Twenty minutes later, Ethan arrived at Chloe’s apartment.
She opened the door with a confused expression.
“What’s wrong?””
He walked past her.
“Who are you?””
The question immediately changed her face.
“What?””
“Don’t pretend.””
Chloe closed the door slowly.
“Ethan…”
“Who are you?””
His voice was louder now.
“You knew about Claire.””
Chloe froze.
A small reaction.
But enough.
Ethan noticed.
“You knew.””
She looked away.
“I knew she came from a wealthy family.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You knew more.””
Chloe sighed.
“Where did you get this?””
“Answer me.””
For a moment, Chloe said nothing.
Then she walked toward the kitchen and poured herself water.
The calmness made him angrier.
“You’re not even surprised.””
She looked at him.
“Because I knew this day would come.””
Ethan stared.
“What does that mean?””
Chloe placed the glass down.
“It means I knew you would eventually find out.””
“Find out what?””
She smiled faintly.
“That you were never as powerful as you thought.””
The sentence shocked him.
“You’re saying this?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
Chloe laughed.
“After everything?””
She turned toward him.
“Ethan, do you really think I was the first person to see what you were?””
He said nothing.
“You had talent.””
Her expression softened.
“I’ll give you that.””
A pause.
“But talent isn’t enough.””
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?””
Chloe looked at him.
“I helped you.””
The answer made him angry.
“You manipulated me.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I guided you.””
“Why?””
Her smile disappeared.
“Because you were useful.””
The room went quiet.
The honesty was worse than a lie.
Ethan stared at the woman he thought loved him.
“Who hired you?””
Chloe didn’t answer.
“Who?””
She looked toward the window.
“The same person who knew Claire would never use her family name.””
Ethan’s blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Chloe turned back.
“You really don’t know?””
“No.””
A slow smile appeared.
“That’s the problem with you, Ethan.””
She stepped closer.
“You always thought you were the smartest person in the room.””
A pause.
“But you never noticed who was moving the pieces.””
At the Morgan estate, Claire sat alone in her room.
The revelation about Chloe should have shocked her.
But strangely, it didn’t.
Not completely.
Because she had already learned the hardest lesson.
People could hide anything.
Even the person sleeping beside you.
Her phone buzzed.
A message.
From Olivia.
*You found out about Chloe.*
Claire frowned.
She replied:
*How do you know?*
The response came immediately.
*Because she was involved when Ethan destroyed me.*
Claire stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
*But she wasn’t the one who started it.*
Claire’s fingers froze.
She typed:
*Who was?*
Several seconds passed.
Then:
*Someone Ethan trusted before anyone else.*
Claire felt a chill.
Before anyone else.
The phrase stayed in her mind.
Because there was only one person who fit.
Someone from the beginning.
Someone who had helped Ethan before Claire knew him.
Someone connected to the first days of his company.
She called Olivia.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Then Olivia answered.
“You figured it out.””
“Who?””
Olivia was quiet.
“Claire…”
“Who started this?””
A long pause.
Then Olivia whispered:
“The person who introduced Ethan to his first investors.””
Claire’s heartbeat increased.
“Who?””
Olivia took a breath.
“His mentor.””
The name came slowly.
“Victor Hale.””
Claire froze.
She knew that name.
Everyone in the business world knew it.
Victor Hale was a legendary investor.
A man famous for discovering young entrepreneurs.
A man who had publicly called Ethan “the next great businessman.””
A man who had appeared beside Ethan in interviews.
A man Ethan always credited for giving him his first opportunity.
Claire whispered:
“Why would he do this?””
Olivia’s answer was quiet.
“Because Ethan wasn’t his only project.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means Victor didn’t invest in people.””
A pause.
“He invested in outcomes.””
The next morning, Ethan arrived at Victor Hale’s private office.
He didn’t make an appointment.
He didn’t ask permission.
The receptionist tried to stop him.
“Mr. Caldwell—”
“I need to see Victor.””
“He’s in a meeting.””
“Then interrupt it.””
The receptionist hesitated.
Because Ethan Caldwell was usually the kind of man people listened to.
But today, he looked different.
Angry.
Desperate.
The elevator opened.
A familiar voice came from behind him.
“Still walking into rooms like you own them?””
Ethan turned.
Victor Hale stood there.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
The same smile he had when Ethan first met him.
The smile of a man who always seemed to know more than everyone else.
“Victor.””
The older man looked at him.
“I heard things became complicated.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“You knew.””
Victor tilted his head.
“About what?””
“Don’t.””
The smile faded slightly.
“You knew about Claire.””
Victor said nothing.
“You knew who she was.””
Still nothing.
“You knew everything.””
Finally, Victor sighed.
“Ethan.””
His voice became almost disappointed.
“You’re angry at the wrong person.””
Ethan stared.
“What?””
Victor walked closer.
“The question isn’t why I knew Claire’s identity.””
A pause.
“The question is why she let you believe you built everything alone.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?””
Victor smiled.
“I’m saying you and Claire are more alike than you think.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
He looked directly at Ethan.
“You both created illusions.””
The sentence made Ethan uncomfortable.
“What illusion?””
Victor stepped closer.
“The illusion that you were in control.””
Then he handed Ethan a folder.
Ethan looked down.
“What is this?””
Victor’s smile returned.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Victor walked away.
“That your marriage wasn’t the beginning of your problems.””
He stopped at the elevator.
“It was the beginning of your downfall.””
The elevator doors closed.
Ethan opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph from ten years ago.
The day he first met Claire.
But there was something wrong.
Claire wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was Victor Hale.
May you like
And on the back of the photograph was a handwritten note:
*The plan begins when Ethan falls in love.*
