Chapter 4: The Woman Ethan Buried

Claire stayed silent after the call ended.

The phone remained pressed against her ear even though Olivia Hart was no longer speaking.

The words repeated in her mind.

*I’m the person he destroyed to get it.*

For years, Claire believed she knew every chapter of Ethan’s story.

She knew about his first failed business.

She knew about the nights he slept at his office.

She knew about the rejection letters from investors.

She knew about every moment when he almost gave up.

Or at least…

she thought she did.

Her father watched her carefully from across the office.

“Who was that?””

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

“Someone from Ethan’s past.””

Her father’s expression hardened.

“Someone you didn’t know about?””

Claire nodded.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” her father said quietly.

“It’s not.””

He stood and walked toward the window.

“People rarely hide things they are proud of.””

Claire looked at the file sitting on the desk.

The financial records.

The suspicious transfers.

The questions she had avoided for years.

Suddenly, everything felt different.

She had spent the last twenty-four hours discovering that Ethan didn’t know who she was.

Now she was beginning to wonder if she had never known who he was either.

Three hours later, Claire sat across from Olivia Hart in a quiet private restaurant on the other side of the city.

No cameras.

No reporters.

No employees.

Just two women who had both been connected to Ethan Caldwell.

Olivia looked nothing like Claire expected.

She wasn’t a powerful executive.

She wasn’t someone seeking revenge.

She looked exhausted.

Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.

Her hands wrapped tightly around a coffee cup.

“I almost didn’t call you.””

Claire studied her.

“Why did you?””

Olivia looked down.

“Because yesterday I watched him do to you what he did to me.””

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Olivia took a slow breath.

“It means Ethan has always been good at making people believe they are the reason for his success.””

The words bothered Claire.

Because they sounded familiar.

“He told me he built everything himself.””

Olivia gave a bitter smile.

“Of course he did.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Olivia looked at her.

“You really want to know?””

Claire didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.””

Olivia reached into her bag and placed a folder on the table.

Inside were old documents.

Emails.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Claire opened the first page.

The company name stopped her.

*Caldwell Innovations.*

Ethan’s first company.

The one he always talked about.

The one he said he created from nothing.

Claire looked at Olivia.

“You worked there?””

“I created it.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

Olivia nodded.

“When I met Ethan, he was smart. Ambitious. Charming.””

A sad smile appeared.

“But he wasn’t a businessman yet.””

She opened another document.

“I had the investors. I had the technology. I had the entire plan.””

Claire looked through the papers.

The signatures.

The dates.

The names.

Everything was there.

“How did Ethan become the owner?””

Olivia looked away.

“That’s the part nobody knows.””

A long silence passed.

Then she continued.

“When we started, we were partners.””

Claire looked up.

“Partners?””

“Yes.””

Olivia’s voice became quieter.

“We spent two years building the company. We worked every night. We lived in that office.””

She smiled faintly.

“Back then, Ethan was different.””

Claire said nothing.

Because she understood.

Everyone had a version of Ethan they remembered.

The question was when that version disappeared.

Olivia continued.

“One week before we were supposed to announce our first major investment, Ethan asked me to sign some documents.””

Claire’s fingers tightened around the paper.

“What documents?””

“Ownership restructuring.””

Olivia laughed softly.

“I thought it was normal legal paperwork.””

Her expression changed.

“It wasn’t.””

Claire already knew where the story was going.

“He transferred everything?””

Olivia nodded.

“He convinced me it was temporary. He said the investors wanted a single face representing the company.””

“And you believed him.””

Olivia looked at the table.

“Yes.””

The answer was painful.

Because Claire knew exactly what it meant.

Trust.

The same thing she had given Ethan.

“What happened after?””

Olivia swallowed.

“Three days later, security removed me from my own office.””

Claire felt a chill.

The same scene.

Different woman.

Different year.

Same Ethan.

“He told everyone I was unstable.””

Olivia’s eyes filled with anger.

“He told investors I was incapable of handling pressure.””

Claire whispered:

“And he took everything.””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.””

The restaurant became silent.

Claire looked outside.

People walked down the street.

Laughing.

Living normal lives.

While somewhere behind the scenes, people’s lives were being destroyed by choices nobody saw.

“Why didn’t you expose him?””

Olivia smiled sadly.

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

“Nobody believed me.””

Claire looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan was already successful.””

Olivia tapped the documents.

“People believe winners.””

The sentence stayed with Claire.

Because she remembered the guests at the hotel.

They didn’t ask questions.

They saw Ethan standing in expensive clothes.

They saw Claire standing in the rain.

And they decided who mattered.

That evening, Ethan arrived at his penthouse furious.

The entire place looked exactly the same.

Expensive furniture.

Glass walls.

A perfect view of the city.

But for some reason, it felt smaller.

Empty.

Chloe was sitting on the couch.

She immediately stood when he entered.

“You’re finally back.””

Ethan ignored her.

He threw his jacket onto a chair.

“How much do you know?””

Chloe frowned.

“About what?””

“Claire.””

The change in his voice surprised her.

“What about her?””

“How much did you know about her family?””

Chloe hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Ethan noticed.

“You knew something.””

She crossed her arms.

“I knew she was private.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Chloe looked away.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Chloe.””

She sighed.

“Fine.””

The answer irritated him.

“You knew?””

“I heard rumors.””

“What rumors?””

“That Claire wasn’t ordinary.””

Ethan stared.

“And you never told me?””

Chloe laughed.

“Why would I? You hated when people talked about her.””

Ethan said nothing.

Because that was true.

Whenever someone suggested Claire came from money, he dismissed it.

Whenever someone asked about her family, he changed the subject.

Because a part of him liked believing he had built everything alone.

Not with help.

Not with connections.

Not with Claire’s family standing silently behind him.

Chloe watched his face.

“You’re angry because she hid it.””

Ethan looked at her.

“But maybe you’re more angry because she didn’t need you.””

The sentence hit him.

Hard.

“Be careful.””

Chloe stepped back.

“I’m just saying.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“You’re forgetting who I am.””

Chloe looked at him.

For the first time, she didn’t seem impressed.

She looked uncertain.

The next morning, Ethan made a decision.

If Claire wanted war…

he would give her one.

He arrived at Morgan Holdings headquarters without an appointment.

The building towered over the city.

A symbol of power.

A place where people like Ethan usually had to request meetings weeks in advance.

But today, he walked through the front doors expecting respect.

The receptionist looked up.

“May I help you?””

“I’m here to see Alexander Morgan.””

The receptionist typed something.

Then looked up.

“Do you have an appointment?””

Ethan almost laughed.

“Tell him Ethan Caldwell is here.””

The receptionist paused.

Then calmly said:

“Mr. Morgan is aware.””

Ethan’s confidence returned.

“Good.””

The receptionist continued:

“He said you can wait.””

Ethan’s smile disappeared.

“Wait?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

The receptionist looked at her screen.

Then answered:

“Until he has time.””

For the first time in his life…

Ethan Caldwell was forced to sit in a waiting room.

And he hated every second.

Thirty minutes passed.

Then an hour.

Then two.

Finally, the elevator doors opened.

Claire stepped out.

She was wearing a simple black suit.

No expensive jewelry.

No dramatic appearance.

Just confidence.

Ethan stood immediately.

“Claire.””

She looked at him.

No anger.

No tears.

Nothing.

That frightened him more than rage.

“We need to talk.””

Claire walked past him.

“About what?””

Ethan followed.

“About us.””

She stopped.

Slowly turned.

“There is no us anymore.””

The words landed harder than he expected.

“Claire—”

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“But I do have one question.””

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Who was Olivia Hart?””

The color drained from his face.

And Claire knew.

Before he even answered.

She already knew.

She had found the first crack in the man who claimed he had nothing to hide.

Ethan’s silence was the answer.

May you like

And then Claire asked the question that made his entire expression change.

“What did you do to her?””
