Chapter 9: The Engagement Party From Hell
Whitmore House had never looked more beautiful.
By seven o'clock the following evening, the ballroom was glowing with crystal chandeliers, white roses, and hundreds of candles.
Waiters carried silver trays through the crowd.
A string quartet played near the staircase.
The city's wealthiest families had gathered for what Richard Whitmore called an emergency celebration of family unity.
But everyone knew the real purpose.
Richard intended to announce Vanessa Sterling's marriage to Ethan Whitmore.
And, more importantly, he intended to announce Ethan's removal from the company's leadership.
Naomi watched the mansion from across the street.
She wore a simple black dress.
Her hair was tied back.
Inside her small clutch was a flash drive containing copies of Catherine's testimony, the financial records, and the photographs from Philadelphia.
Ethan stood beside her in a dark suit.
"You know," he said, "most people spend the evening deciding what to wear to an engagement party.""
Naomi glanced at him.
"Most people aren't walking into one to destroy a criminal empire.""
He smiled faintly.
"Fair point.""
A black car pulled up behind them.
Sofia stepped out.
She wore a navy dress and the silver pendant around her neck.
Daniel followed.
Naomi turned immediately.
"I thought you were staying at the safe house.""
Sofia shook her head.
"I'm done hiding.""
Naomi looked at her sister.
"Are you sure?""
Sofia lifted her chin.
"Mom didn't risk her life so I could spend mine running away.""
Naomi pulled her into a brief embrace.
Daniel approached.
"I'll remain outside with Sofia until you signal.""
Naomi nodded.
"Nobody enters until I call.""
Ethan checked his watch.
"Seven twenty.""
Naomi looked toward the mansion.
"Let's go.""
Inside, Vanessa Sterling was standing beside the grand staircase.
Her champagne-colored gown was covered in tiny crystals.
Her hair was arranged in perfect waves.
She looked every inch the future Mrs. Whitmore.
When she saw Ethan enter, her face brightened.
Then she noticed Naomi.
Her smile disappeared.
"What is she doing here?""
Ethan handed his coat to a waiter.
"Good evening, Vanessa.""
"I asked you a question.""
"Then you should ask it politely.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"You weren't invited.""
Naomi looked at the champagne glass in Vanessa's hand.
"Neither was I invited to be accused of stealing your earrings. Yet here we are.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Security!""
Two guards approached.
Ethan raised his hand.
"Nobody touches her.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You don't have authority here anymore.""
"Neither do you.""
She leaned closer to him.
"Your father is about to announce the board's decision. You should think very carefully about what you say next.""
Ethan looked at her.
"Where is your father?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Somewhere important.""
"Like the office where he signs the checks?""
Her expression changed.
Before she could answer, Richard appeared at the top of the staircase.
He was wearing a black tuxedo and a white pocket square.
"Everyone, please.""
The orchestra stopped.
The guests turned.
Richard descended slowly.
"Thank you all for joining us tonight. I know recent events have caused some concern.""
His gaze briefly landed on Naomi.
"But the Whitmore family has always believed in stability, tradition, and loyalty.""
He smiled.
"Tonight, we celebrate a new beginning.""
Vanessa moved beside him.
Richard continued.
"My son, Ethan, has made certain decisions that have unfortunately raised questions about his judgment.""
A murmur spread through the ballroom.
Ethan's jaw tightened.
Richard lifted a document.
"The board has therefore agreed that I will temporarily resume executive control of Whitmore Holdings.""
Applause began.
Some guests clapped enthusiastically.
Others simply watched.
Richard turned toward Ethan.
"I know this is difficult, son. But one day, you'll understand that leadership requires difficult decisions.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"I understand more than you think.""
Richard ignored him.
"And now, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Ethan and Vanessa will finally set their wedding date.""
The guests applauded.
Vanessa extended her hand.
Ethan didn't take it.
Instead, he walked toward the center of the ballroom.
"Before anyone celebrates, there's something you should see.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Ethan, don't.""
Ethan turned toward the audiovisual technician.
"Please.""
The ballroom screen flickered.
A photograph appeared.
Catherine Whitmore.
A younger Catherine, sitting in a hotel room.
The guests became quiet.
Richard stepped forward.
"Turn that off.""
The screen began playing the recording.
Catherine's voice filled the ballroom.
"My name is Catherine Whitmore. If you're watching this recording, it means I failed to stop my husband.""
A collective gasp spread through the room.
Vanessa looked at Richard.
"What is this?""
He didn't answer.
The recording continued.
Catherine described the shell companies, the hidden accounts, and the financial transactions.
Then she spoke about the person inside the family who had helped Richard destroy evidence.
Richard rushed toward the technician.
Naomi stepped into his path.
"Don't.""
He stopped.
His eyes narrowed.
"Miss Reyes. I thought I made myself clear.""
"You did.""
"Then why are you here?""
"To finish what you started in Philadelphia.""
Richard's face changed.
The recording ended.
A second screen appeared.
Financial transactions.
Bank transfers.
Company names.
Richard Whitmore's signature.
Richard Sterling's signature.
Victor Sloane's company.
The ballroom erupted.
"Is this real?""
"What's happening?""
"Those are our accounts!""
Vanessa grabbed her father's arm.
"Dad?""
Richard Sterling stood near the back of the room.
His face had gone pale.
"Turn that off!"" he shouted.
Naomi looked toward him.
"Why? Afraid someone might recognize your signature?""
Richard Sterling pushed through the crowd.
"These documents are fabricated.""
Ethan raised his voice.
"Then explain the transfers.""
He pointed to the screen.
"Five million dollars paid to V. Sloane Holdings. Three million to an offshore account controlled by Sterling Global. And another two million transferred the night my mother died.""
Vanessa stared at the numbers.
"Father, what is he talking about?""
Richard Sterling grabbed her arm.
"Stay out of this.""
She pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
Richard Whitmore turned toward the guards.
"Remove them.""
Nobody moved.
The head of security looked uncertain.
Naomi stepped forward.
"There's more.""
She pressed another button.
A photograph appeared.
Victor Sloane standing beside Richard Whitmore.
Then another.
Margaret Hale signing the authorization document.
Finally, the video of Daniel Cross.
Alive.
The ballroom went silent.
Ethan looked at the screen.
"Daniel?""
Naomi nodded.
"My father.""
Richard Whitmore's face twisted.
"That's impossible.""
A voice came from the entrance.
"Apparently not.""
Daniel Cross walked into the ballroom.
The crowd parted.
Richard stared.
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely frightened.
Daniel approached the center of the room.
"Hello, Richard.""
Richard took a step backward.
"You should be dead.""
Daniel gave a tired smile.
"I've heard that before.""
Eleanor Whitmore appeared beside him.
She was wearing a dark blue gown and carrying a leather folder.
The guests turned.
Richard's expression changed.
"Mother, what are you doing?""
Eleanor walked toward the microphone.
"Something I should have done thirty years ago.""
She placed the folder on the table.
Then she looked directly at the crowd.
"My name is Eleanor Whitmore. For years, I allowed my son to use my family's name to hide financial crimes.""
Richard shook his head.
"Mother, stop.""
She continued.
"I knew about the money. I knew about the threats. And I knew what happened to Catherine.""
Ethan's eyes filled.
Eleanor looked at him.
"I'm sorry, darling.""
Richard stepped forward.
"You're confused.""
"No," Eleanor replied.
"For the first time in years, I'm perfectly clear.""
She opened the folder.
Inside were original bank records, signed contracts, and a notarized statement.
"I kept copies of everything.""
Richard stared at her.
Then he looked toward the ballroom entrance.
A group of men in dark suits had appeared.
Two carried official identification.
"Richard Whitmore?"" one of them called.
Richard's face went white.
"What's this?""
"Federal investigators. We'd like you to accompany us.""
The ballroom erupted again.
Vanessa stepped backward.
Richard Sterling moved toward the side exit.
But two investigators intercepted him.
Richard Whitmore raised his hands.
"This is a misunderstanding.""
The investigator showed him a document.
"We have a warrant.""
Richard looked around desperately.
Then his eyes settled on Naomi.
"You.""
She didn't move.
"You did this.""
Naomi's voice was calm.
"No, Mr. Whitmore. Your own decisions did this.""
He laughed bitterly.
"You think you've won?""
He leaned closer.
"You have no idea what you're holding.""
Naomi stared at him.
"I know exactly what I'm holding.""
She lifted the flash drive.
"Evidence.""
The investigators placed handcuffs around Richard's wrists.
As they led him away, he turned toward Ethan.
"You're destroying your own family!""
Ethan looked at him.
"You destroyed it long before I was born.""
The ballroom slowly emptied.
Some guests left without saying goodbye.
Others crowded around the investigators.
Vanessa stood near the staircase, her champagne dress suddenly looking ridiculous.
She approached Naomi.
"Can we talk?""
Naomi turned.
"What about?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"I didn't know about the accounts.""
"You knew about the accusations.""
Vanessa looked down.
"I was angry.""
"You deliberately humiliated me.""
"I thought you were trying to take Ethan away from me.""
Naomi studied her.
"You didn't lose Ethan because of me, Vanessa.""
Vanessa looked up.
"You lost him because you treated everyone around you as something you owned.""
The young woman began crying.
For once, there was no audience she could command.
No servant she could threaten.
No family money that could make the moment disappear.
Ethan approached.
"Vanessa, we need to end this.""
She looked at him.
"After everything?""
"Especially after everything.""
He removed the engagement ring from his pocket.
He had been carrying it for weeks.
He placed it on the table.
"I hope you find a life that makes you happy. But it won't be with me.""
Vanessa stared at the ring.
Then she walked away.
At 11:48 p.m., Naomi stood alone in the ballroom.
The chandeliers were still shining.
The orchestra had packed away its instruments.
A few staff members were collecting abandoned glasses.
Ethan approached with two cups of tea.
"Chamomile," he said.
Naomi accepted one.
"You remembered.""
"Some things are worth remembering.""
They stood beside the windows.
After a while, Ethan spoke.
"What happens now?""
Naomi looked toward the empty staircase.
"The investigators will examine the records. Richard and Victor will have to answer for what they've done.""
"And you?""
She hesitated.
"I need to find out what really happened in Room 814.""
Ethan nodded.
"Then I'll help.""
Naomi looked at him.
"You don't have to.""
"I know.""
He smiled faintly.
"That's why I'm offering.""
For a moment, everything felt quiet.
Almost peaceful.
Then Naomi's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message.
*Congratulations on exposing Richard Whitmore. But you exposed the wrong man.*
A second message appeared.
*Richard was never the one giving the orders.*
Naomi stared at the screen.
Then a photograph loaded.
It showed Margaret Hale.
Standing beside a woman Naomi had never seen before.
The woman was wearing a federal investigator's badge.
Beneath the photograph was a name.
*SPECIAL AGENT HELEN MERCER.*
And the final message read:
*Ask Margaret who really ordered Daniel's death.*
Naomi slowly lowered her phone.
Across the ballroom, the front doors opened.
Margaret Hale entered.
She looked directly at Naomi.
And for the first time in their entire relationship, Naomi saw something in her mentor's face that she had never seen before.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Margaret knew the message had arrived.
And she knew what it meant.
"Naomi," she whispered.
Naomi set down her tea.
"Tell me the truth.""
Margaret closed her eyes.
Then she said:
"Daniel wasn't supposed to survive Philadelphia.""
Naomi's blood turned cold.
May you like
Margaret looked toward the empty ballroom.
"Neither were you.""
