Chapter 8: The Daughter Richard Whitmore Tried to Erase
Naomi couldn't hear the waves anymore.
She couldn't hear the wind.
All she could hear was Sofia's voice.
He's our father.
Daniel Cross stood several feet away, his face drained of color.
Ethan looked between them.
"Wait. What?""
Sofia clutched the silver pendant.
"Daniel is our biological father.""
Naomi turned toward him.
"Is that true?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
Naomi took a step backward.
"All these years?""
"I was going to tell you.""
"When?""
Daniel lowered his head.
"After Philadelphia.""
Naomi laughed once.
A painful, disbelieving sound.
"After Philadelphia? You disappeared. You let me believe you were dead. You let me spend eleven months thinking I had failed to save my own father.""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"I know.""
"Did Margaret know?""
"Yes.""
Naomi closed her eyes.
Another betrayal.
Another secret.
Another piece of her life that had been decided by people who claimed they were protecting her.
Sofia stepped forward.
"Naomi, please.""
Naomi looked at her.
"Did you know?""
Sofia shook her head.
"Not until last year.""
"Who told you?""
"Daniel.""
Naomi turned toward him again.
"Why?""
Daniel took a breath.
"Because Catherine Whitmore wasn't the only person Richard had threatened. Years ago, your mother discovered that Richard was using the company's charitable foundations to move money. She was preparing to expose him.""
Naomi stared.
"Our mother?""
Daniel nodded.
"She worked as an accountant for one of his companies. When she discovered what was happening, she came to me.""
Naomi's mind raced.
"Why didn't she go to the police?""
"Because Richard threatened her. He had enough influence to make people disappear from official records.""
Daniel looked at Sofia.
"After she died, I took you both away from Boston. I changed our names. I thought I could keep you safe.""
Naomi's voice broke.
"Then why did you leave?""
"Because Richard found us.""
Daniel looked down.
"I made a deal. I would work with the protection agency and help dismantle his operation. In exchange, he would leave you girls alone.""
"And you believed him?""
"No.""
"Then why?""
"Because I had no other choice.""
Naomi stared at him.
For years, she had believed her childhood had been ordinary.
She remembered a father who taught her to ride a bicycle.
A mother who baked cinnamon bread.
A little sister who followed her everywhere.
Now she was learning that nearly every happy memory had been built around a lie.
Sofia reached for her hand.
"There's more.""
Naomi looked at her.
Sofia opened the pendant and removed the memory card.
"Mom made a recording before she died.""
Daniel nodded.
"That card contains Catherine's testimony and the original account ledger.""
Ethan frowned.
"Why would your mother have evidence belonging to Catherine Whitmore?""
"Because Catherine gave it to her," Daniel replied.
"They were working together.""
Ethan looked toward the marina entrance.
"Then my grandmother knew?""
"She knew some of it.""
Naomi stared at the memory card.
"Why did you keep it all these years?""
Sofia answered.
"Because Richard wanted it. Victor threatened me. They told me if I ever handed it over, you would die.""
Naomi gently closed Sofia's fingers around the pendant.
"You're safe now.""
Sofia shook her head.
"No, Naomi. You don't understand. Richard has been looking for this for thirty years.""
They moved to a small rented house outside Portsmouth.
Daniel insisted that it was safe.
Naomi didn't believe in safe houses anymore, but she agreed to stay long enough to understand the evidence.
Ethan contacted his grandmother.
Eleanor answered on the first ring.
"Are you all right?""
"We're alive," Ethan said.
"But we need to talk.""
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere private.""
"Is Naomi with you?""
"Yes.""
A pause.
Then Eleanor asked, "Did you find the girl?""
Ethan looked at Sofia.
"Yes.""
Eleanor began crying.
"Thank God.""
Sofia took the phone.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
"Yes, darling?""
"My mother trusted you.""
Eleanor's breathing caught.
"I know.""
"Then why did you let her die?""
The question hung in the air.
Eleanor didn't defend herself.
She didn't offer an excuse.
"I was afraid," she whispered.
Sofia's eyes filled.
"She was afraid, too.""
"I know.""
"She still did the right thing.""
Eleanor began sobbing.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Sofia handed the phone back to Ethan.
"Tell her we'll come home when we're ready.""
At 2:30 p.m., Daniel connected the memory card to an old laptop.
The screen displayed several files.
Financial records.
Scanned documents.
A video recording.
Naomi leaned closer.
"Play it.""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he clicked.
A woman appeared on the screen.
Catherine Whitmore.
She looked younger than Naomi remembered from the family photographs, but the resemblance was unmistakable.
Her dark hair was pulled back.
Her face was pale.
She was sitting in what appeared to be a hotel room.
"My name is Catherine Whitmore," she began.
"If you're watching this recording, it means I failed to stop my husband.""
Ethan leaned forward.
His eyes were fixed on the screen.
Catherine continued.
"Richard has been moving money through companies that don't exist. He has used charitable foundations, private investment funds, and government contracts to hide the payments.""
She paused.
"I have copies of everything.""
She held up a folder.
"Daniel Cross is helping me expose the operation. He has agreed to protect the evidence and deliver it to the authorities.""
Her expression changed.
"But there is something else.""
She looked directly into the camera.
"Richard has a partner inside the family.""
Ethan frowned.
"What?""
Catherine continued.
"Someone who has access to the private accounts, the security systems, and the legal documents. Someone who has been helping him destroy evidence for years.""
The screen flickered.
Then Catherine spoke again.
"If anything happens to me, do not trust the person who claims to have protected my son.""
The recording ended.
Silence filled the room.
Ethan slowly stood.
"Who was she talking about?""
Daniel looked at him.
"We don't know.""
Naomi examined the files.
There were dozens of financial transfers.
Some were dated twenty years earlier.
Others were dated only months ago.
Then she noticed something.
A series of payments made to a company called Sterling Global Consulting.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Richard Sterling.""
Ethan leaned over.
"Vanessa's father?""
Naomi nodded.
"The Sterling family wasn't just benefiting from the Whitmore merger.""
Daniel opened another document.
"Richard Sterling was helping Richard Whitmore move money through offshore accounts.""
Ethan stared.
"Vanessa knew?""
Naomi didn't answer.
She was reading another line.
A payment had been made to a private security company.
The recipient's name was listed as V. Sloane Holdings.
Victor.
Daniel shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
Naomi looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because Victor wasn't supposed to be working for Richard Sterling.""
"Who was he supposed to be working for?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he pointed to another name.
Margaret Hale.
Naomi felt her stomach tighten.
"What?""
Daniel zoomed in.
The document showed a series of transfers from an account associated with the protection agency.
The final recipient was Margaret Hale.
Ethan stared.
"Are you saying Margaret was paid by Richard?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not necessarily. These could have been payments for legitimate security services.""
Naomi looked at the dates.
They began shortly after the Philadelphia incident.
And they continued for eleven months.
"Why would Margaret receive money from a company connected to Richard?""
Daniel had no answer.
Then Sofia noticed something.
"Look at the last payment.""
Naomi enlarged the document.
The amount was five million dollars.
The date was November 3.
Three days before Naomi had received the first photograph of Victor outside Whitmore House.
The reference line contained a short note.
*FINAL TRANSFER — SUBJECT RELOCATION COMPLETE.*
Naomi slowly turned toward Daniel.
"Who was relocated?""
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then he whispered:
"Me.""
At 5:40 p.m., Naomi's phone rang.
Margaret.
She answered.
"Hello.""
"Naomi, where are you?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"Are you with Daniel?""
Naomi looked at him.
"Yes.""
A long silence followed.
Then Margaret said, "I need you to listen carefully. Richard has contacted the authorities. He's accusing you of kidnapping Eleanor and stealing company property.""
Naomi laughed bitterly.
"Of course he is.""
"He's also claiming Daniel Cross is an impostor.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Put me on speaker.""
Naomi did.
"Margaret, it's Daniel.""
Her voice broke.
"Daniel...""
"Tell me about the five million dollars.""
Silence.
Naomi felt the room change.
"Margaret?""
The older woman took a shaky breath.
"I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
"I received the money to relocate Daniel. It was part of an agreement.""
"With Richard?""
"Yes.""
Naomi's face hardened.
Daniel looked furious.
"You sold me to the man I was trying to expose?""
"No!""
Margaret's voice rose.
"I thought I could control the situation. Richard wanted Daniel alive because he needed the original ledger.""
Naomi stared at the phone.
"And what did he want from me?""
Margaret didn't answer.
"Margaret!""
Finally, she whispered:
"He wanted you to recover your memory.""
Naomi went cold.
"Why?""
"Because he believed you had memorized the account numbers. The original ledger was only part of the evidence.""
Daniel slowly sat down.
Naomi felt the blood drain from her face.
Room 814.
The gunshot.
The flash drive.
The missing memories.
She had spent eleven months believing she was protecting people from her past.
But Richard had been searching for something inside her mind.
"Did you know about Sofia?"" Naomi asked.
Margaret's silence was answer enough.
"Did you know she was alive?""
"Yes.""
Naomi closed her eyes.
"How long?""
"Since December.""
"Eleven months?""
Margaret began crying.
"I couldn't risk contacting you.""
Naomi's voice became dangerously quiet.
"You could have told me the truth.""
"I was afraid.""
"Everyone was afraid. My mother was afraid. My sister was afraid.
Daniel was afraid. And you all decided I was the only person who didn't deserve to know.""
Margaret whispered her name.
Naomi ended the call.
At 7:15 p.m., Ethan received an alert on his phone.
The Whitmore Holdings board had scheduled an emergency meeting for the following morning.
Richard was preparing to announce that Ethan was mentally unfit to serve as chairman.
But the accompanying document contained something even more disturbing.
A signed statement from Eleanor Whitmore.
It claimed that Naomi Reyes had manipulated the elderly matriarch, stolen confidential records, and threatened her family.
Ethan looked up.
"My father is using my grandmother.""
Naomi read the document.
Then she noticed the signature.
It was Eleanor's.
"Did she sign this?""
Ethan shook his head.
"Not unless someone forced her.""
Sofia stepped closer.
"Look at the date.""
The statement had been signed that morning.
Naomi's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*Your grandmother is waiting at home. Come alone if you want her alive.*
Attached was a photograph.
Eleanor was sitting in her private sitting room.
A man stood behind her.
His hand rested on her shoulder.
Naomi recognized the man immediately.
Victor Sloane.
But there was something else in the photograph.
On the table in front of Eleanor sat a framed picture of Catherine Whitmore.
Someone had written across the glass in black marker:
*ONE FAMILY. THREE GENERATIONS OF LIES.*
Naomi looked at Ethan.
"We're going back.""
He nodded.
Daniel stood.
"So am I.""
Naomi shook her head.
"No. You stay with Sofia.""
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Then at Naomi.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that protecting them meant allowing them to make their own decisions.
"Be careful," he said.
Naomi picked up her jacket.
"I've spent eleven months being careful.""
May you like
She looked at the photograph one final time.
"Tomorrow, Richard finds out what happens when the people he buried stop being afraid.""
