Thinking

Chapter 7: The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood her.

Not because the words were unclear.

Because they were impossible.

*Your father was Antonio Moretti.*

The sentence stayed in the air like something too heavy to fall.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at Luca.

Then at Sal.

Nobody moved.

Nobody corrected her.

That scared me more than anything.

“Say that again.””

My voice sounded strange.

Like it belonged to someone else.

Vanessa looked at me.

Her eyes were filled with something I had never seen there before.

Regret.

“Your father was Antonio Moretti.””

“No.””

The answer came automatically.

I shook my head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

My entire life had a different story.

My father was a name written on old documents.

A man my mother rarely mentioned.

A man who died before I was old enough to remember him.

His picture had sat in a small wooden frame on our apartment shelf.

A normal man.

A quiet man.

Not Antonio Moretti.

Not the head of one of Chicago’s most powerful families.

Not Luca’s father.

“That’s not true,” I whispered.

Vanessa looked down.

“I wish it wasn’t.””

Luca had not moved.

That frightened me.

I expected anger.

Shock.

A reaction.

Anything.

But he stood completely still, staring at the woman he was supposed to marry.

“Vanessa.””

His voice was low.

“Explain.””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I was young.””

“You knew.””

The accusation was quiet.

But it cut through the room.

Vanessa looked at him.

“I knew there was a woman named Claire Reed.””

Sal stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You knew too.””

“Yes.””

“But you kept it from him.””

The old driver lowered his eyes.

“Because I made a promise.””

“And I didn’t?””

Luca looked at her.

“What promise?””

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation told me there was still more.

Always more.

“My father made me promise never to talk about Claire.””

“Why?””

“Because he said it was dangerous.””

“For who?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And I knew before she answered.

“For Emma.””

I left the library.

I didn’t plan to.

My body just moved before my mind caught up.

I needed air.

Space.

Anything that wasn’t another impossible truth.

The hallway stretched in front of me.

The same hallway I had walked through every day.

The same walls.

The same paintings.

But now everything looked different.

Because somewhere inside this mansion, my mother had walked.

She had worked here.

She had loved someone here.

And she had left with a secret she carried until death.

“Emma.””

Luca’s voice followed me.

I stopped.

I didn’t turn around.

“Was it true?””

He was silent.

That was enough.

I turned.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I swear to you, I didn’t.””

I studied his face.

I believed him.

That was the worst part.

Because I didn’t want to.

It would have been easier if he had lied.

Easier if he had been part of it.

But he looked just as lost as I was.

“You’re my brother.””

The words left my mouth.

And they felt strange.

Like I was saying them about a stranger.

Luca looked away.

“I don’t know what we are.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

We went back into the library.

Vanessa was still there.

Sal stood beside the window.

Nobody looked comfortable.

Nobody belonged in that room anymore.

“Tell me everything,” Luca said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

She looked at him.

“I know your father loved Claire.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Sal.

He nodded slowly.

“I suspected.””

Luca’s expression changed.

“My father loved my mother.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked down.

“But he loved Claire too.””

The words were painful.

Not because of Antonio.

Because I imagined my mother.

A woman who raised me alone.

A woman who never spoke badly about anyone.

A woman who carried a secret that could have destroyed her.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Claire became pregnant.””

My throat tightened.

“And?””

“She wanted to tell Antonio.””

“Did she?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she found out Elena was sick.””

I looked at Luca.

His face had gone pale.

“Your mother knew?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa continued.

“She knew Claire was pregnant.””

“Then why didn’t she hate her?””

The question came from Luca.

Vanessa looked surprised.

Then sad.

“Because Elena Moretti was not like everyone else.””

She looked toward the portrait above the fireplace.

“She said a child should never pay for the mistakes of adults.””

My chest tightened.

That sounded like the kind of person Sal had described.

Kind.

Brave.

Different.

“What happened after that?”” I asked.

Vanessa took a breath.

“Antonio wanted to protect you.””

Luca frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed someone would use Emma against you.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Luca.

“Against me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father believed that if anyone knew you had a sister, they would use her as leverage.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“So he hid me?””

“Yes.””

“He abandoned my mother.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“He tried to protect her.””

“Then why did she die?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

That silence.

That terrible silence.

Finally, Sal spoke.

“Because the person who knew about Emma was not your father.””

Luca looked at him.

“What?””

Sal’s face was heavy.

“Someone else found out.””

“Who?””

The old driver looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

“My father.””

The name sat there without being spoken.

Roberto Bellini.

The man in the photograph.

The man standing beside my mother the night she died.

Luca’s hands curled into fists.

“Your father knew?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“That Antonio had another child.””

I felt sick.

“Why would that matter?””

Luca answered before she could.

“Because an heir changes everything.””

The room went quiet.

I understood.

Money.

Power.

Control.

Things I had never wanted.

Things I had never known existed.

Things that apparently made people dangerous.

“My father wanted me gone.””

Vanessa looked horrified.

“No.””

“Then why did my mother die?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know.

Or because she didn’t want to.

Then Sal walked toward the desk.

“There is one thing we haven’t checked.””

Luca looked at him.

“What?””

“The safe.””

Everyone went still.

Sal opened an old drawer and removed a small brass key.

“I kept this hidden.””

Luca stared.

“Where is it?””

Sal looked toward the wall behind Antonio Moretti’s portrait.

“Behind there.””

Ten minutes later, the portrait was removed.

Behind it was a small metal door built into the wall.

A safe.

Old.

Hidden.

Waiting.

Luca inserted the key.

It didn’t turn.

He frowned.

“It’s locked.””

Sal looked at me.

Then at Luca.

“Your father said it required two people.””

I stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Sal reached inside his coat.

He pulled out another key.

Smaller.

Older.

He handed it to me.

My hands trembled.

“Why do I have this?””

“Because your father left it for you.””

I stared at the key.

“My father?””

Sal nodded.

“Antonio Moretti.””

I looked at Luca.

He gave a small nod.

Not approval.

Not acceptance.

Just a silent agreement.

Together, we placed both keys into the locks.

The safe clicked.

The door opened slowly.

Inside was a stack of documents.

A small jewelry box.

And one sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

*Emma Claire Reed Moretti.*

I stopped breathing.

Nobody had ever written that name before.

Not my whole name.

Not the truth.

Luca reached for the envelope.

Then stopped.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You open it.””

My fingers shook as I broke the seal.

Inside was a letter.

Only a few lines.

But the first sentence destroyed me.

*My dearest Emma, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep you safe.*

I covered my mouth.

The room blurred.

I kept reading.

*I am sorry I could not be the father you deserved.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

Then I reached the final line.

The line that made Luca step back.

The line that made Sal whisper a prayer.

Because Antonio Moretti had written:

*The person who tried to kill your mother is the same person who is trying to destroy Luca today.*

And beneath his signature was a name.

May you like

A name none of us expected.

*Elena Moretti.*
