Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew My Secret

The name on the back of the photograph burned into my mind.

*Vanessa Bellini.*

I stared at the ink until the letters stopped looking like a name and started looking like a threat.

“No.””

Luca’s voice came quietly from beside me.

Not disbelief.

Denial.

The kind that came before anger.

“She wouldn’t.””

Sal looked at him.

“You don’t know that.””

Luca turned sharply.

“Be careful.””

The old driver didn’t move.

“I have been careful for twelve years.””

The words hit harder than a shout.

Because they carried the weight of every year Salvatore Russo had spent protecting a secret that was never his to carry.

I looked down at the photograph again.

My mother.

A baby in her arms.

The Moretti mansion behind her.

And a message saying I was never supposed to survive.

My fingers went cold.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Luca.

“Why would Vanessa have this?””

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t know.””

“But she sent it.””

“I don’t know that either.””

I looked at him.

The hesitation hurt.

Not because he was defending her.

Because he was still trying to understand that the woman he planned to marry might have been connected to the darkest part of his family history.

Sal stepped closer.

“Mr. Moretti.””

Luca looked at him.

“There is something else you need to know.””

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece of a life I thought I understood.

It felt like every answer created three more questions.

“What else?”” Luca asked.

Sal looked at the photograph.

“Your father didn’t trust Roberto Bellini.””

Luca’s expression hardened.

“You said that.””

“No.””

Sal shook his head.

“I said your father believed Roberto betrayed him.””

A pause.

“He also believed Roberto was not acting alone.””

The room became silent.

Luca understood immediately.

“You think Vanessa knew?””

“I think Vanessa was younger then.””

“She was a child.””

“Yes.””

Sal’s voice softened.

“But children in powerful families learn things they shouldn’t.””

I sat down.

My legs suddenly felt weak.

For ten months, I had cleaned Luca Moretti’s house.

I had walked past his family portraits.

I had polished the same dining table where people discussed money, power, and secrets.

And all that time…

I had been standing in the middle of a mystery connected to my own mother.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked Sal.

He looked at me.

The pain on his face was immediate.

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because your mother made me promise.””

That stopped me.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Sal looked toward the window.

“Before the night she died.””

I swallowed.

“She knew something would happen?””

“She knew she was in danger.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“Then why didn’t she leave?””

Sal closed his eyes.

“Because Elena Moretti was in danger too.””

I looked at Luca.

His face changed.

“What?””

Sal nodded.

“Your mother wasn’t only protecting herself.””

He looked at me.

“She was protecting your mother.””

The next morning, the mansion felt different.

Not because anything had changed physically.

The marble floors were still spotless.

The flowers were still fresh.

The expensive paintings were still hanging on the walls.

But the illusion was gone.

This house had always looked beautiful.

Now I knew beauty could hide things.

Luca had canceled every meeting.

Every appointment.

Every obligation.

The man who usually lived by a schedule had spent the entire night searching through his father’s old files.

I found him in the library at eight in the morning.

He looked exhausted.

“You should sleep,” I said.

He didn’t look up.

“So should you.””

“I’m not the one trying to uncover a twelve-year-old conspiracy.””

A small smile appeared.

The first one since last night.

“Fair.””

I stood near the desk.

“Did you find anything?””

He closed a file.

“Almost nothing.””

“That sounds suspicious.””

“It is.””

He pushed the papers toward me.

“These records were altered.””

I frowned.

“Altered?””

“Names removed. Dates changed.””

“By who?””

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.””

He leaned back.

“My father had security systems. Cameras. Access logs.””

“Could someone erase them?””

“Not without permission.””

The room went quiet.

I understood.

Someone inside the family had access.

Someone trusted.

“Vanessa?””

Luca looked away.

“I don’t want it to be her.””

I nodded.

“That doesn’t mean it isn’t.””

His eyes moved to mine.

“You’re very direct.””

“I clean houses for a living.””

I shrugged.

“I’ve learned people reveal themselves when they think nobody important is watching.””

For a moment, he just looked at me.

Then he said quietly:

“You’re not invisible, Emma.””

The words surprised me.

Because sometimes I felt like I was.

A person who moved through wealthy people’s lives without leaving a mark.

But Luca didn’t look at me like that.

Not anymore.

Around noon, Sal found something.

He came into the library carrying an old leather folder.

“I remembered something.””

Luca immediately stood.

“What?””

Sal placed the folder down.

“Your father had a private safe.””

Luca frowned.

“He had dozens.””

“No.””

Sal shook his head.

“This one was different.””

“Where?””

“In this house.””

My eyes widened.

“You mean it’s still here?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you open it?””

Sal looked at Luca.

“Because your father gave me one instruction.””

“What?””

“Never open it unless both children are present.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“Both children?””

Luca’s face changed.

“Children?””

Sal nodded slowly.

“Your father’s words.””

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

“Are you saying…”

Sal looked at me.

“Yes.””

Before he could finish, the library door opened.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood there.

She looked different.

No evening gown.

No perfect makeup.

Just anger.

“You’re looking for the safe.””

Nobody spoke.

Luca stared at her.

“How do you know about that?””

Vanessa walked inside.

“I know because my father told me.””

The answer shocked everyone.

Even her.

Because once she said it, she realized she had admitted something she shouldn’t have.

Luca’s voice became dangerous.

“Your father knew about my father’s safe?””

Vanessa looked away.

“He knew a lot of things.””

“Like what?””

Silence.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Like the fact that your father wasn’t the only person protecting secrets.””

Luca stepped closer.

“What secrets?””

She looked at me.

And the expression on her face was no longer anger.

It was guilt.

“Your mother didn’t die because she discovered a crime.””

My breath caught.

“Then why did she die?””

Vanessa looked at Luca.

Then at Sal.

Then back at me.

“Because she discovered who your real father was.””

The room froze.

I couldn’t breathe.

Luca stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.

And for the first time, I believed she wasn’t pretending.

“Emma’s mother didn’t have a secret daughter.””

She swallowed.

“She had a secret child.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“It means everyone has been looking at the wrong family connection.””

Luca stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

“Emma…”

May you like

A pause.

“Your father was Antonio Moretti.””
