Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

By morning, I had set everything in motion.

Sarah and Lily were moved to a secure suite on the third floor, guarded around the clock. Every exit monitored. Every visitor screened. No one entered without my permission.

I summoned Julian to the house at nine sharp.

He arrived exactly on time, immaculate as always, gray suit, calm expression. He walked into my study, placed his briefcase on the desk, and smiled.

“I received your message,” he said smoothly. “Is everything all right?”

I sat behind my desk. I did not stand. I watched him closely.

“Nora was arrested last night,” I said.

Julian’s expression did not change. “Arrested? Good heavens. What on earth for?”

“Poisoning me,” I said. “And holding my wife prisoner for seven years beneath this very house.”

For a split second—barely perceptible—I saw his pupils dilate. Then he shook his head in apparent disbelief.

“Sarah? Alive? That is… astonishing news, Ethan. I had no idea. Truly.”

“Didn’t you?” I leaned forward. “Because the way the records were falsified, the way documents were handled… it looks suspiciously like your signature appears on several key papers from that period. Including the authorization to transfer all my assets into sole management under you while I was ‘incapacitated by grief.’”

Julian sighed. He folded his hands atop the desk.

“Ethan, anyone can copy a signature. Nora clearly did this to gain control. She manipulated everyone. She is a very clever woman. But I assure you—I knew nothing of this. If she did these terrible things… she acted entirely alone.”

“Did she?” I asked. “Because Sarah remembers a man named Julian visiting her. Giving orders to Nora. Threatening to harm Lily if she ever spoke.”

Julian’s smile faded completely. He leaned back in his chair. His demeanor shifted. No longer the helpful advisor. Now cold. Calculating.

“Your wife has been locked in a basement for seven years, heavily drugged,” he said evenly. “Her memory cannot possibly be reliable. You cannot hang serious accusations on the ramblings of a traumatized woman.”

“I also have Nora’s confession,” I lied smoothly. “She named you as her partner. Said you orchestrated everything. Shared the profits. Gave the orders.”

Julian went still. He studied my face, searching for truth.

“She said that?”

“She did.”

He stood up slowly. He walked around the desk until he stood directly before me.

“She is lying to save herself,” Julian said quietly. “And you are a fool if you believe her over me. I built this empire with you. I stood by you through every tragedy. Why would I throw it all away now?”

“Greed,” I said. “Seven years of control over my fortune. Power. And perhaps… something else. You were always too close to Nora, Julian. Too protective.”

He laughed. A dry, humorless sound.

“Believe what you like. But you have no proof. And Nora will never testify against me. Because she knows exactly what happens to people who try.”

He turned toward the door.

“Stay away from my family,” I said.

Julian paused with his hand on the doorknob. He looked back at me. His eyes were cold and flat.

“Careful, Ethan. You have been through a great shock. People under stress… they make accusations they later regret. They lose the people they love if they are not careful.”

The threat hung in the air, unmistakable.

He walked out.

I stood alone in the quiet study. My heart pounded. He had not denied it. Not truly. He had threatened me instead.

Julian was dangerous. And he would not go down alone.

I reached for the phone to call my lead investigator. But before I could dial… a scream shattered the air above me.

May you like

Sarah’s voice.

I bolted from the study and sprinted up the stairs.
