Chapter 14 - UNFINISHED BUSINESS

I returned home to find Sarah standing in the sitting room, staring at the window. She turned as I entered. Her face was pale.

“Someone was here,” she said quietly. “While you were gone. They left this on Lily’s pillow.”

She held out a small folded note. No signature. Only one sentence:

*He did not work alone. We are watching.*

My blood ran cold. Julian had spoken the truth. There were others. Corrupt officials. Accomplices. People who profited from his scheme. And now that Julian was in custody… they were terrified.

“We need to go somewhere safe,” I said. “Until we find out who they are.”

Sarah shook her head. She walked to me and placed her hands on my chest.

“No,” she said. “We run from nothing. We have already lost seven years. We will not lose another day. We stay. We face them. Together.”

I looked into her eyes. Strong. Resolute. Fearless.

“Together,” I agreed.
